I guess there will be a smathering of "Society" types at this Sure, I know the Reader. I remember it well. I think it is a syndicated paper too. They also have it in L.A. And speaking of L.A., that picture you described (which I believe is the ATGB album cover. Isn't it Kicki?) reminds me a bit of the murals on the inside of the Frolic Room, which is the "haute lounge" bar just below the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, where I saw Ferry in '94. AND, speaking of album covers, I have decided that I like the "Another Time Another Place" cover an awful lot. I like it because of its ambiguity. On just about all other Ferry covers, the iconography is so straightforward, they usually affirm the idea that money and taste bring happiness by portraying the fantasy life of the beautiful well-to-do, hip and cultured set in a manner similar to that used by advertising, or they cater to the cutural sensibilties of that set by depicting scenes that are sort of artsy, as in the case of "Bete Noire," or sort of nostalgic-artsy, like in "Taxi, with it's Cartier-Bresson style of photography. But the underlying message is always the same, "If you're rich and you're part of the in-crowd, you will always be happy and have lots of sex." I like the "Another Time Another Place" cover because it contradicts this visual standard. It shows some "beautiful people," but they are out-of-focues and looking sort of silly. I mean, look at that person with the polka-dot suit and the rainbowhead hairdo. And look at the blonde women. Here is a one alienated siren. In fact, everyone in this scene is looking alienated, lonely, and awkward, most of all Ferry. But they also look like they're really trying to have a good time, forcing themselves to appear the to be happy with their "good life," as society expects. It seems to speak to the message that comes across in much of his music, (but rarely in the album covers) which is that we are basically alone in life, but we are always looking for some sort of connection when we surround ourselves with friends, lovers, and parties. Any body who has any information on who played what parts (guitar wise) on 'More than This' and what equipment was used, please reveal all. Thankyou for those who replied concerning the remasters and their packaging. I didn't realise that the cardboard covers were an attempt to replicate the original LP's and their artwork. If so, please come forward sir, and a reply to the above query concerning what guitars were used, would surely be classed as a gift from above, and I would be eternally greatful! It's my favorite Roxy song too. It may be Phil, still unconfirmedbut if you listen to the solo at the end of Slave to Love (Ferry's Boys and Girls album), it sure sounds like the same guy, that is for sure Neil H. Nothing Phil has done sounds like it. I'm afraid Rhett's nephew has been in hiding since being flamed for declaring his passion for Joan Armatrading. ;-) Neil Hubbard has played on a ton of sessions. He played with Kokomo w/ other Ferry alumni Mel Collins and Alan Spenner, and Chris Thomas producing, though I've yet to hear it. Credits I once read, included playing on albums by Joe Cocker, the Grease band, BB King, Alvin Lee, Paul Carrick, Johnny Hates Jazz and Paul Young. Can't remember where I saw it though. But there was much more than that. He's a great player and I prefer him to Manzanerra, especially on the softer more ambient stuff. He makes for the perfect "2nd" guitarist. Like a jazz player, he makes one note louder or softer than the next, a lost art these days. If you get a copy of Bryan Ferry's Newtown video or Roxy's the High Road you can see him in action, he shines much brighter in Newtown IMO. He 1st appeared w/ Ferry on the Casanova remake that's on Let's Stick Together Album. My favorite piece by Hubbard I've heard is on "All Night Operator" from Ferry's In Your Mind album. The guitar part is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. It's like icing on a cake, a tasteful solo and ends sounding like skipping rocks on the top of the ocean. I highly recommend for a tasteful guitar player/fan. Ferry himself raved about Hubbards contrabution to that song in a 70's Trouser Press interview. Have fun with all this great music. You may have shattered my >illusion that hero Phil did not play the spine tingling lead parts, but if >this is the case, then I ask (anybody) where can I get hold of more stuff >by Neil Hubbard, if there is any. I read recently that Hubbard as well as Andy Newmark played on Kevin Rowland's new solo album. If your looking for it just imagine a Roxy cover gone horribly wrong: wrong gender, balding bloke with stockings and suspenders. Alternatively you can just recall you're worst nightmare EVER. Listened to Mamouna this morning for the first time in a few weeks. What a fabulous album. It distresses me to read Bryan saying that his "confidence was shaken" during the recording of this album. It's almost as if he's blaming himself for the record being a commercial flop when this is blatantly untrue. Roxy Music's ability to combine experimentation with commercial success was one of their greatest gifts and a very rare one at that. But that was the 70's, this is the 90's. It's much more of a closed shop now, people aren't as open minded any more. In retrospect Mamouna was never going to sell. I'm just amazed that a man of his experience can define the divides between success and failure in relation to sales figures. And also, if his confidence was shaken then, I'd love to know what's happened in between to inflate it. Heather: very good piece on the ATAP cover. If you're theory on these society gatherings is correct then Bryan has had a pretty glum time over the last 20 years. Of course the solo covers were always a lot less visually exciting than the Roxy ones but they always had something to say. You can tell from looking at the cover of Bride that your in for one hell of a bleak journey, albeit an inspired one. To make one more point about this Bride thread. The tracks that Ferry did eventually leave out were of a much less agitated variety. People have been quick to point out that the self penned numbers were written before the Hall break up but the songs that did make the final cut could maybe suggest that Bryan wanted the public to view this as a demented rollercoaster ride resulting from the split. Anyway, I'll leave it at that, Thanks for hanging on, Gareth. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 14:01:54 EDT From: JObinv01@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] UK Dates At Last The UK dates confirmed so far are:- December 10 Liverpool Royal Court 12 Sheffield ??? 14 London Festival hall 15 Croydon Fairfield 17 Glasgow Clyde Auditorium 18 Newcastle City Hall 19 Bristol ??? 21 Manchester Appollo tickets on sale sometime next week Watch this space John O'Brien - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 14:35:24 -0400 From: "Tim Kendrick" Subject: Re: [AVALON] New pics Liked these pix a lot! My favourite solo is his BB King type solo on Always Unknowing. I met him at the last tour and had some good muso conversations about guitars and how he works with Bryan. I gave him a copy of my bands CD and he wrote back to me with a 5 page letter giving me all sorts of advice. He's a really nice guy, very down to earth. So far I have only seen them available for $12.49 a piece from cdnow.com. I paid less than that for the whole album. Where is a good place to get import singles? I am from Green Bay,Wisconsin, USA.
