There was certainly an early version of DANCE AWAY, sounding a little Sirenish, and the first issue of MANIFESTO contains both this and the first ANGEL EYES with the extra verse. Both are in the THRILL OF IT ALL package. If you want to find them on vinyl, look for the MANIFESTO picture disc. It's not hard to find, and it's the only way of being sure you're getting the earliest issue. I wrote on the list along time ago about my meeting with Bryan when he was at the BBC to record a Late, Late Breakfast Show appearance of Don't Stop The Dance (was it 85?). And he told me the same thing then - that I should give up trying to find a copy of War Brides because it was inaccurate rubbish in the discography of that Rex Balfour book. I am glad it has been confirmed again by your 'encounter' with Bry 'cos when I read the other day that Rex Balfour was a pseudonym for Simon Puxley, I was sure that War Brides might have existed after all - 'cos if Dr Simon mentioned it, it must be true!! Nah - don't bother hunting for the Holy Grail. Good news too about the Giddy Up single 'cos I nearly bought a copy for £15 the other day at Esprit (www.eil.com). I managed to commit ATGB (the CD version via Radio 2), LST (the live version off the telly Saturday night) and Jealous Guy (live via Radio 2) onto minidisc from the Netaid coverage the other weekend. Did anyone else hear Billy Bragg (presenting for Radio 2) rattle on after playing ATGB about how they had been discussing in the OB van which Bryan album ATGB was from and it must be "the one with a blue cover with red lettering, Bryan in a quiff and leather jacket". How wrong can they be? You'd have thought the Bryan publicity engine might have given Radio 2 some crib notes about how it was from the new album...due out soon. I am of course jealous that Dutch people get to hear our maestro's new album first - but life's never fair...and us Brits always get the releases last (of movies, some music and anything else worth having, particularly concert tickets - when are they going on sale?) even when there are British artists involved!!!!!!!! Actually, the new incarnation of the 9:30 Club is an excellent place to see a show (although it's an even worse neighborhood than the old one). Excellent sightlines and a very intimate spot (although not quite as intimate as the old one, but the other tradeoffs more than make up for that). There are bleacher-type seats in the balcony and I also believe that the bar in the balcony has some tables and chairs as well. I've not been to a show that the 9:30 Club where tables and chairs have been ever set up--it's not that kind of place. But it has a good vibe and every show I've seen there has been memorable (the performers usually comment on how much they like their dressing rooms, for some reason). While a larger setting might, yes, allow audience members to sit down, these two intimate shows could really be the highlight of the tour--where else will you be able to find yourself so up close and personal with Mr. Ferry? I think it's another part of a long session. Have you tried to run it backwards? I will do in a few days. But normally when you play things backwards you get a kind of 'sucking' sound. The intro of the Newtown video is the backward version of New Town at half speed. John welcome to the list, excellent story's! Did you get response about the cd-tree? I can send you the ASSH cd. About the new album. I have listen to it three times so don't take my words too serious. Normally I say to everybody that they must buy the record and when they do not like it I pay the cost. If the recordcompany doesn't do the promotion I have to do it! But this time I have to be more careful. Some of the songs are so exactly done in that '30 style that it a lot of people don't like it, I think. One thing is for sure. His singing is excellent, unpolished and it didn't get lost in the mixing. For the ones who didn't hear the Mpeg's a bit like Sonnet 18. Most of the songs have three violins and a cello and a piano. Some of them clarinet, trombone, sax and trumpet. Two or three songs have a kind of tango sound with two bandeons. And there is the 'ondes martenot' an old French synth. My favourites: I'm in the mood, where or when, miss otis regrets, you do something to me and September song I want to see your faces when you Avalonions hear this album for the first time! Cheers Han Some of the stuff is excellent but there are some songs that have a kind of Dixieland(Is that English) flavour with those clarinets.
