In paradise. Crammed into just under four hours. It was almost too much to take. Gathering together an errant Britpopster, endless lost American geniuses, a faded glam roué, unsung folk heroes, jazz nutters, avant-garde angels, Appalachian oddballs, classical renegades and much, much more, Cave's appointed co-ordinator for the entire evening, bald bumbling Hal Willner, showed an ambition worthy of the late Harry Smith himself. Smith was the archivist, occultist and anthropologist whose massive 'Anthology Of American Folk' provides the songs for tonight's gig. First up is Brian Wilson's old collaborator, Van Dyke Parks (his debut on a London stage), chuckling his way through a lovely riverboat journey to 'East Virginia'. He's followed by Nick Cave, serious as cancer in a button-upped three-piece, singing apocalyptic gospel with Kate and Ann McGarrigle. Other highlights include Gavin Friday and Margaret O'Hara dedicating the Titanicentric 'The Ship Went Down' to the people of the Belfast shipyard, an irascible Jarvis Cocker gleefully shouting, "I shat in your ciabatta", Bryan Ferry showing his bizarre interpretative skills on 'John Henry', and Dylan's old jousting partner Bobby Neuwirth looking like a Las Vegas cowboy and singing about wanting to be a mole in the ground. This may have been a one-off act of madness, but it unearthed so many riches and unexpected unifying principles it deserves to be a long-term project. If anyone has the guts (or stamina) to make it happen... Madonna and Bowie could be ousted by ICA The Institute of Contemporary Arts is considering ditching 18 famous patrons, including Madonna and David Bowie, to become more "cutting edge", according to insiders. The proposal is the brainchild of Ivan Massow, 31, appointed chairman of the ICA in May. Mr Massow sets out his plan in a letter obtained by the Evening Standard which contains the details of an ICA council meeting held earlier this month at the Groucho Club, the Soho drinking den not unused to the hatching of plots. "We've agreed," says the letter to an unnamed correspondent "... to invite the present Patrons/Presidents to retire ... Are you still happy to let this be seen 'publicly' as a symbol of the ICA's unending desire to challenge established art and ideas, and keep the institute free of the baggage of 'safe' representation and affiliation?" Ivan Massow, right, chairman of the ICA, and David Bowie Other patrons include free-thinking rock stars Jarvis Cocker, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Pete Townshend, Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno; new editor of the Independent on Sunday, Janet Street-Porter; Turner prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread; film-maker Jane Campion and actress Joanna Lumley. Their names are presently printed underneath the masthead on the ICA's official stationery. Although their patronage does not involve cash donations, they lend their names, prestige, and sometimes presence to ICA functions. The letter goes on to ask whether patrons and presidents should be replaced - and if not, whether the ICA should "publicly" explain their departure. "Or do we sweep it away quietly and hope that we can get one last bit of patronage or a good party out of it?" The ICA, on The Mall, has long prided itself on its allegedly radical programme: it hosts club nights, has two cinemas and is perhaps the last place in London to believe in the "happening". But it is widely believed to have lost its cutting edge reputation in recent years: it now showcases the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, whose work is not considered obscure. A friend of Mr Massow's, who did not wish to be named, said that it was this lost radicalism that the new chairman wished to revive. "It's become too staid, too middle-aged," he said. "The ICA began as an independent venue for the best young and contemporary art. "Ivan wants to get back to that. These patrons and presidents are too mainstream; they send out the wrong message." Mr Massow, who counts Madonna as a friend, refused to comment on the plans last night. A sudden star on the arts circuit, though anathema to the traditionally liberal arts world, he has already raised the ICA's profile. Openly gay, a prospective father by Eastenders actress Jackie Clune, and friend to both Michael Portillo and Peter Mandelson, he made his money in the insurance business and has recently ruled himself out of the race for London mayor, despite being hotly tipped as a likely candidate. Ms Street-Porter last night declared herself unconcerned about the proposals. She is a collector of modern art, according to a spokesman, but "doesn't care" what the ICA plans to do with its patrons. Since then, I've been almost certain that the tape's version of Dance Away was different to any album version I've heard since. I seem to remember this long, quiet intro... you could hear Bryan lighting up much more clearly. There was also an extended instumental build-up somewhere in there. These things struck me because I was already familiar with the single. Still with me? Never mind. I have two vinyl copies of Manifesto - one with the original Angel Eyes, one with the remix - and both contain the version of Dance Away that you find on all the compilations. Hi Bahi... The very first 'edition' of Manifesto had the 'guitar' version of Angel Eyes, and the version of Dance Away you mentioned - longer intro - long instrumental piece in middle etc - (this particular edition on Vinyl only edition - with Lyrics - also same versions on the first edition of the Picture Disc too) - not on CD unfortunately (the orig. Dance Away , I mean). Of course - the 'guitar' version of Angel Eyes ended up on the 'Thrill' 4 CD Box Set... To my knowledge - all CD versions of the album (before the recent remasters) all carried the 7" Single versions of the songs... Nice to hear people liked the 'Judi Dench' anecdote...I guess people wanted to know the answer to that one for years - I know I did ! Bryan was also unaware that the wrong mix of 'South Downs' was put on the 'Thrill' Box (very different to the flip side of 'Oh Yeah'..). - he thought that was a bit shoddy, actually, - the mastering mistake too at the start of 'While My Heart' - which includes the last couple of bars of 'India' - and I'm not sure that the remix version of Manifesto on Disc 4 of 'Thrill' is exactly the same as the remix flip of 'Over You' either... Just goes to show that there's plenty of versions of various things floating around in various archives, doesn't it ? . One thing I did ask Bry about - was the 'War Brides' track - supposedly recorded as the flip side to the 'abandoned' 1973 Single release of 'Do The Strand'. He assured me the track was NEVER recorded by Roxy or himself. The 'title' was used though, and a 'little bit' of the written music - for the 'War Brides' song written by Andy Mackay for the much later 'Rock Follies' TV Show (only available on the flip of the 'Sugar Mountain' Single, I think - not on the TV Album... ) And finally - the supposed 'Roxy Xmas Single' of 1980 ('Giddy Up' by The Dumbells) was purely a Manzanera and Friends project. Bry said he did not appear on it himself, nor does he appear on the 'I Got A Woman' single by the Banshees - circa 1964/65 - he'd left the Band some months earlier. So don't believe some 'Rare Record Guides' that say Bry appears on that single - he doesn't. My God - this is turning into Anorak corner ! One thing that does stick in my mind (through my surprising daze at having Bry standing in front of me in my Record Shop asking me to ask him questions to "test the old grey matter") was when I mentioned that FYP was my fave album of his - he said "Me, too". When pressed for a fave track - he said "Beauty Queen". He also said "I'd better not comment" (with a wry smile) when I asked him if it was true that he kept Bowie waiting on an answer to whether he could use '2.H.B.' for his Pin-Ups Album - so he could 'get ahead' and get 'These Foolish Things' out ahead of Bowies project. I guess you'll have to make your own mind up on that one ! Yeah, I know - 'anorak' questions all - but I'd had them in my head for years, and I suppose I surprised myself by remembering them anyway. I was surprised at how terribly shy he was though. OK, enough anecdotes I think ! Enjoy the USA Gigs everyone, & I hope to catch 4 or 5 in the UK in December... Reecey...
