I just re-read the Toronto Star interview on Bryan's pages - someone already kindly posted it to this list - and was struck by this: "Working on this album was really refreshing, not only because of the material being great, but because I'm doing it acoustically, real players all playing together in the room. You have a microphone in the middle, in a fairly traditional way." After years of recording albums that keep the weird stuff well buried, Bryan releases something that's basically recorded with one microphone, having threatened to do something like this for twelve years. That's at least fifty-five tracks less than he's used to. Allowing for the background sounds and additions that clearly can be heard on Chan's three mp3 files, and the possibility of separate vocal tracks, let's say... what, four? Even Taxi used twenty-four. Of the three songs that Chan has digitised so far, the first is my favourite, and not only because Bryan sounds slightly under the weather on the other two. (Having heard three tracks, I'm now beyond forgiveness, Martin.) He initially seemed to be overplaying the vulnerability a bit - the vocals sounded so intentionally fragile. On the positive side, this does occasionally achieve a feeling of honesty and sincerity, and the lack of polish in the vocal delivery make some of these things sound like dreamy, late night laments, recorded alone at a piano at home and used as the basis for an acoustic recording session. On the other hand, we're so used to polished and perfected Ferry vocals that the new technique occasionally backfires, when Bryan's voice fails to quite hit those highs. Initially, at least, this display of honesty seemed a little far fetched. (I know that this really is cynicism taken a step too far.) I expect to like it more in a few days' time: stuff that I end up liking a lot usually takes an age to start sounding good. What a shock it must have been for Roxy fans in 1973 - those who caught the intensity, every throwaway reference, every hint of menace, the dark musical, lyrical and visual humour - to hear These Foolish Things. Remembering this, I'm trying to think of this new one as a similar aside, but it's sometimes too convincing. I hope Bryan remembers which button does what when he returns to battle with his own stuff. J O'B - the Mother of Pearl remake has been discussed here but not the Basic Instinct link, which was news to me. Johhny Reece: great to hear that it was Judi Dench telling us not to be so inquisitive. I've often wondered. Cool story. Janeen: Dazed & Confused is a UK magazine. I didn't spot any Ferry content in the last copy I saw. Anyway.... Please help a frustrated so called guitarist. Despite his minimal playing on the track, 'More Than This', Phil's guitar is quite superb. Try as I might, I just cannot emulate his sound. Would any body out there be kind enough to tell me how? EG guitar type, amps, pickups, effects, delays and pedals. A response would be met with the upmost gratitude! He was just on and looked and sounded great. His oh so brief set( damn them VH1) showed him singing Jealous Guy and As time Goes By. It was jolt to see the new haircut, but it was a joy just to seem him after all this time ( for me since he washere in 1994). He had a full orchestra behind him and it worked. I am curious as to who the players where i.e. guitar player who played Phil's part and the sax player. If you closed your eyes, you could have sworn it was Phil and Andy. I wieh the could have shown the complete set, but I have to be contented that he was evem mentioned at all. It sees as the audience at the Palais de Nations was most appreciative of his work. I think Bryan was pleased as well. He was smiling all the way thru the set. I can't wait to see him live. Tickets for the Chicago leg HAVE YET TO BE ANNOUNCED!!!! What goes on??????. Perhaps the rest of the set will be shown later in the programme (it has 90 mins still to go and is showing artists singing songs from their sets fragmented through the show) or during tomorrow's hilights. Bryan did look cool and very relaxed - Black dinner suit, white shirt (no tie) and singing very confidently. Were any list members at the gig???
