Okay, it's the Ferry equivalent of a coffee-table book ... Bahi, if you've only heard the title track I can forgive your cynicism. Whilst not doubting that the album will appeal to the Sade and Chardonnay generation I think you'll find that some of the tracks have unusual touches, quirky arrangements, and curious vocal phrasings, that collectively have the stamp of the master. As for his bank balance Robert Fedder and I debated this at our recent lunch and we concluded that the old boy is not down to his last shillings. He is, however, cautious with money and it is not inconceivable that this album's realtively cheap recording costs coupled with potentially good sales allows him the luxury of putting out some original, challenging material, say, next summer, without worrying unduly about a commercial failure. Much as thespians like Steven Berkoff play vaudaville villains in Tinsletown "Action" films to finance alternative theatrical ventures. What's 'in the vaults' is what i really want to hear, but it'll take some 'covers' first to do the job - re 'Taxi' then 'Mamouna'. Nice to see the Master back in action though. Meanwhile, Chan , many thanks - yes yes yes - more MP3's if you can - especially 'Miss Otis Regrets' - a great song and i'm wondering how Bry treats it. You all know what it's like to follow Bry/Roxy - endless waiting and delays are all part of the game, and that's always been the way. A rare pleasure though to get the chance to hear something up front... As for the 'CD Tree' it's the first I've heard (I'm a newbie) - any chance of purchasing new item or am I too late ? Details please if possible, desperate to hear it...Looking forward to hearing how the USA Gigs go - till he comes here (UK). Just an 'added bit' for you which some of you may already know, but here goes anyway for those that don't - for over 20 years I've wanted to know the identity of the Woman who whispers "Don't Ask Why" in the fade-out of FYP - and I and other Roxy-ites always presumed it was Amanda Lear. 2 Summers back, there I was - working in my Record Shop in North London - and in strolls Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) (his Studios are across the road) and he says to me - "You're the Roxy Fan, aren't you ? Well, Bryan is working with me tomorrow - I'll bring him in to see you". Sure enough, the man kept his word - in strolls Bry (shyly) the next day - signed loads of LPs for me - and I had a million questions to ask him - what's his own fave RM LP for example (FYP) and track (Beauty Queen) - but the "Don't Ask Why" question came into my head. "Oh, that was Judi Dench" says Bryan, "she was working in the next Studio at the time, so I got her to do it". 20 Years I'd waited for that answer. Just thought I'd share that with ya all.. I have, but it's only a demo, and I can't connect to Chan's link unless a register. Anyway, Macast has a function called Opec Location, where you type in the URL that you want to download. I also got the Quick Time thingy when I clicked on the link, but try to load it from one of your players instead. Macs using the current Mac OS, including QuickTime 4 and its Netscape plug-ins, play mp3 stuff without a problem, either within the browser or after downloading files. To update your version of the OS for free, go to Apple's QuickTime web site: and download the QuickTime 4 package. The version of MoviePlayer you end up with will play mp3 files that you download but (if you install the Netscape plug-ins) your browser itself will play them when you click on the links. A more boring alternative is an item from the heap of Macintosh freeware and shareware that plays mp3 files and/or generates mp3 files from other sound sources. SoundApp, freeware, is one of the former. Available at all the usual shareware and freeware places - it (like QuickTime 4) plays Windows wav files and AIFFs but also pretty much every other format you can mention.... if someone sends you a sounds file, this thing will play it, MODs included. It's the way you assign your Browser (Netscpae in my case) with the right "mime" type under the 'helper' option. For sound files mine usually triggers 'RealPlayer'.(if type is '.ra' or '.ram') and the newer 'RealPlayer-G2' does mp3. When visiting the mp3.com, the Site auto-detect if your Browser is capable. If not, they auto advice you use 'Realaudio' to d-load. LiquidAudio another cool player with adjustable "skins' also auto-recon mp3. I usually use SoundApp Fat or MacAmp (nicer skin) and when fiddling around with mp3 files (CD-ripping, conversion) MPecker does the job very well. But I see what you mean with Macast regarding the URL recoqnition, it's like the same case with RealPlayer, where one is able to assign a URL. And for those of you who like to play your MP3 files 'offline' just go here, it's a real beauty, we call it 'Deutsche Gründlichkeit' or maybe even 'MP3 Noire': http://www.mplayer3.com/ To remain topic here, two nice URL's for you Mac die-hards, the Adult Site: http://www.applefritter.com/ http://symphonydb.eecs.umich.edu/legomac/default.htm have fun, Frank - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 18:12:53 -0700 From: "Alison Brown" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Brian Eno in La?!!!!
