Martineaux - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Oct 1999 02:12:37 -0700 From: erik simpson Subject: [AVALON] More Than This Hi; The Roxy/Ferry compilation "More Than This" came out yesterday and, willing tool of the capitalist oppressor that I am, I bought it for that one damn song ("I'm in the Mood for Love" from the forthcoming CD). (How could I pass up the opportunity to purchase a Ferry/Roxy recording with a sticker on the front that reads "As Seen On TV"?) A REALLY rough approximation of what I am hearing might be described thusly; imagine "These Foolish Things" or "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" or some such similar number done with the ensemble that played on "Bete Noire" (the song). I've only heard this new track a handful of times so far, and this could all change, but I quite like it as of now, and expect it will continue to grow on me. And even though the ensemble is substantially different than what we are used to hearing him work with, it still seems to carry his unique stamp, instrumentally as well as vocally. Judging by this, and the review by Chan, I find myself growing cautiously more optimistic about the new album. However, this new "best of" does give me new reason for concern. Of course boiling down Bryan Ferry's career to one 75 min disc is a preposterous undertaking. This comp is seriously skewed towards what I fear is the yuppie audience (and here I am refering more to an attitude or mindset, rather than socio-economic status) I think Virgin wants court with this new album. How do you put together a Roxy/Ferry best of that has NO songs from "For Your Pleasure", "Country Life" or "Mamouna", (three of his very best in my opinion) and find room for 2 songs from "Flesh and Blood"? ("The Bride Stripped Bare" and "In Your Mind" are also totally ignored.) "Virginia Plain", "Street Life" and "Let's Stick Together" are pretty much the primary tracks that generate any heat at all. Most of the rest leans towards the later, smoother sounds. Which I like fine, but such a narrow view is hardly representative of his entire career, and certainly does NOT constitue a "Best Of"!. Pleasant surprises; the inclusion of "Street Life" and "Kiss and Tell", 2 favorites of mine, but not necessarily songs that I thought rated that highly in Ferry's career overview. (Which raises the question as to who picked these songs anyway. I can't imagine it was Bryan himself and that he really feels this is his all-time best work. But these 2 tracks indicate to me that he might at least have had SOME input.) Enough Is Enough dept.; OK, I know you can't really put out a disc subtitled "The Best of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music" and not include "Love Is The Drug", "Let's Stick Together" and "Jealous Guy", but on a purely personal level, I don't need to hear them anymore and they certainly don't need to be compiled yet again. Yanking these three and replacing them with, just off the top of my head, "The Thrill of It All" or "Out Of The Blue", "Mamouna" or "Your Painted Smile" and "Do The Strand" or "Editions Of You",( thus representing "FYP", "Country Life" and "Mamouna") (or really give the yuppies a scare and throw on "Re-make/Re-model" or "The Bogus Man" or "In Every Dreamhome...") would have been a step in the right direction. Ok, I realise I'm indulging in equal parts whimsy and denial here. Enough Is Enough indeed. Bye. It may be that the release date for ATGB was chosen later than usual. Mind you, as there've been articles in a few glossies the foregoing could be a load of rubbish. Here, in fact, is a review from the American glossy, OUT: On the heels of his contribution to last year's VELVET GOLDMINE soundtrack, famed Roxy Music frontman Ferry returns - this time with an unexpected album of standards from the 1930s. But before you scream 'retro-hip,' remember that this bigger, badder voodoo daddy was doing inspired covers long before Brian Setzer discovered Louis Prima. Backed by a crack, antique-styled jazz band that puts the squirrel nut zippers to shame, Ferry slips into these done-to-death numbers ( The way you look tonight, I'm in the mood for love, Falling in love again, - you get the idea) like the legend he is... and turns in the saddest version of Miss Otis Regrets this side of Ella Fitzgerald. There - pretty good, eh? Interestingly, this is the first piece of work Ferry's done in ages - perhaps since Country Life unless you count Street Life! - which is getting uniformly favorable reviews. So far, anyway. Here's hoping it'll continue that way. As I recall the last 3 albums have shared a similar pattern : The fashion glossies all adore Bryan because of the music/style crossover and tend to get their big hagiographic articles in at least a month before the album release. Then the music rags put in their tuppenyworth perhaps a fortnight/week/day before it hits the shops and those bedenimmed lager-swillers will surely be sharpening their bic biros in anticipation of Bryan (supposed working class traitor - and, worse, ex-avante gardist -) reworking a series of romantic songs from Hollywood musicals. I suspect the album will sell however. And we'll all love it. Eric made an interesting reference to the song "Bete Noire" in his review of "I'm in the mood for love." The snip of "Where or when" that I heard on UK radio also had that haunting, vaguely left bank feel to the arrangement ; the waiters whistling as the last bar closes and so forth.. Umm, maybe it's because you're the only Avalon listmember in Sweden?? Just kidding - I agree with you Kicki.. It's a bit odd Ferry would start his tour here but I'm sure he has reasons. Maybe he's still trying to get that big 'breakthrough' in North America, whereas Europe is a no brainer..? Don't despair, he'll no doubt drop by and see you in the new year. I don't know if you've seen the photos from the liner of his new album yet, but he looks pretty clean-cut and conservative despite the shaggy hair - much more casual than we usually see Ferry, but he still looks damn good.
