Just as I expected from Ferry. He is got that pensive look on his face. Probably longing for days long gone. Also, odd thing I just found. Searched Roxy Music under book instead of music by mistake and it seems there is some sort of RM story coming out in Nov. called Unknown Pleasures. Check it out. Lots of goodies on the way. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 22:10:09 -0700 From: "Chan" Subject: [AVALON] As Time Goes By - Review SPOILER: If you would like to be surprised by this cd then please do not read further. I don't want to ruin anybody's listening experience. I just figure that some people might be curious as to what they can expect. - --------------------------- There's only one word that comes to mind when I think of this cd: SINATRA. This is definitely going to turn some heads from people. It has really grown on me..maybe because I like the Ferry's phrasings a lot. This cd sounds totally organic and just what you would expect from songs in the 30s: lamenting strings, piano, acoustic bass and a crooner. Track by track: As Time Goes By: This sounds the same as most versions that I have heard of the song. Prominent piano and a swinging beat. Ferry adds his own touch to the phrasings as usual. The Way You Look Tonight: Very fast tempo jazz beat. Could easily be a Harry Connick Jr. arrangement. Easy Living: Another shuffle beat faster than As time goes by. Features some lovely horn solos in the beginning. I'm in the mood for Love: This song gets a bit more into the Ferry ambience. It has a bit of a salsa feel to it. There's a brooding mid-tempo jungle beat with congos and maracas. There is a female voice reciting French words as well. It's lovely. Where or when: One of my favorites on the cd. A very dark and somber track with piano and violins. This is a haunting track to say the least. I don't remember ever hearing this song in such a sad way..I like how he changed the mood of it. When somebody thinks you're wonderful: Another mid-tempo shuffle beat. A cute sounding song with Bryan adding a little humor to his vocals. It sounds as though someone is tap dancing towards the middle of the song. Sweet and lovely: This song follows the atmosphere of When somebody thinks you're wonderful. Louis Armstrong comes to mind. The horns are playful and Bryan gets a bit more into the vocal delivery here. Miss Otis Regrets: A piano ballad in the style of classic Sinatra. It is a free flowing tempo and once again Bryan gives it a dark tone with his voice. It has some ambient sounds of streets and rain. This is great for a rainy day or night in the city. Time on my hands: A slowed-down swing beat. Bryan's voice is more contemplative here. The horns and piano once again gives the song character. The jazz kit also has a deeper groove here. Lover come back: This has a classic swing song feel. A bit held back on the dynamics but it slowly creeps under your skin. The tempo picks up with this song. Makes you want to get on the dance floor with a partner. Bryan sounds at a lost for breath here. Falling in love again: A saloon style ballad. This would go great on a vaudeville stage. I can only think of Liza Minelli when I hear this song. The violins sound great on this track and is more prominent than the piano. Love me or leave me: A playful track. Seems more rough and un-rehearsed than the others. Bryan has some fun with the words here. You do something to me: A creepy crawler sounding track. Bryan sounds a bit mischevious here. I do believe I hear an accordion as well ;) Cole Porter is one of my all time favorite songwriter so I'm very partial to this track. Just one of those things: A great vaudeville track. He has a lot of fun on this fast tempo track. I believe I hear some spoons tapping in the background as well. September song: The most unusual song on this cd. I think is is closest to the the phrasings that Bryan is known to do. It is a somber and eerie track with great strings and horn arrangement. Makes me think of a foggy night on France. A great closer. Well, in case you don't know by now, this cd is NOTHING like anything he has ever done. I believe this will surprise a lot of people who are not big Bryan Ferry fans. I also think some of these songs will make it on some Romantic-Comedy movies in the future. Someone call up Meg Ryan and pass her a copy. I like these types of songs a lot and I think Bryan does a great job with the arrangements and the phrasings. He doesn't have the vocal abilities of a Sinatra or a Bennett but he has a distinct voice like theirs. I hope people will give this cd a chance. It's certainly a brave career move on his part. I know he is fullfilling a longtime idea by doing this cd so I wish the best of luck to him. Have you contacted ticketmaster at all? Or the theatre? As of last Friday afternoon- nothing regarding the show was on ticketmaster's web page. - - -k ps - we should all meet up before/after the show! Still no word in the locals or the Reader this past weekend. My gut feeling is that it will occur this weekend. It's getting close to the date ( almost a month away) so tickets HAVE to go on sale. I of course am very anxious now-in between studying and in-between days (Cure plug!) awaiting on the return of Bryan. It's almost too much.... Jas Yes we will meet before/after the concert ( you too Will if you can envision it ( no pun intended)). I will be waiting at the back entrance with camera in hand for Bryan to exit the- pick one:(a) tour bus or (b) limo. I know which side he will enter on. I just missed Debbie Harry last month walking inside as I was about to cross the alley to the theatre. We must meet him anyway we can just to say hello or to get a quick snapshot. Of course I have unfinished business from 10 years ago from across the street at the Uptown.
