"I went to see it with [former Roxy Music bandmate] Brian Eno," says Ferry in an oh-so-proper British accent. "We kept nudging each other when our records came on. It was like, 'Oh! That's a good one!'" Actually, "I don't remember there being such a gay kind of thing," he says, slightly embarrassed. "The thing is… I like girls." Ferry has always set trends- the glacial cool of the seventies solo albums informed the dressed-up Brit-pop of Blur and Pulp even before the pansexual glam-rock of Roxy Music inspired Haynes, Marilyn Manson, and androgyny-obsessed New York clubs like Squeezebox- but he's never been one to rest on his laurels. Nor is "As Time Goes By," his new album of thirties pop-music standards, an aging hipster's attempt to score with the swing audience. "Is it Brian Swetzer (sic) who's doing that?" he asks, professing ignorance of the craze. Instead, as he has several times in his career- he covered "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "You Are My Sunshine" on earlier solo albums- he's returning to the classic pop songs that inspired the emotional chill of his own work. "My first solo album had one song for the 1930s and that was the title track, 'These Foolish Things,' Ferry explains. "Ever since then, I've wanted to do an album completely of songs from that period." Such is his devotion to standards like "I'm In The Mood For Love," "You Do Something To Me," and "Easy Living" that his earnest versions retain the phrasing made famous by crooners like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. "Once I got into it, I stopped caring about comparisons, because I was enjoying doing it so much," he adds. "There's a very obvious romantic flavor that runs through all of the songs, which seems refreshing to me in this cynical age we live in." Ferry says he finds little new music that interests him ("I'd rather listen to Coleman Hawkins," he says flatly) but he's considering a return to his rock roots with a Roxy Music reunion tour next summer- most likely without Eno along for the ride. "From time to time, I get an inclination to go on the road again," Ferry says. "And I certainly feel it now, but Brian says that there's nothing he would like less than to play live." Ferry pauses a moment and laughs. "He says he sweats when he thinks about it. Maybe we could find a shrink to help him." I'm sure folks will offer opinions, but you can also read the list archives at http://www.smoe.org/lists/avalon. The album is supposed to be released in the US on October 19, 1999, although it seems to me that it's now October 12th? The last note I have for the UK release date is that the album has been moved to 25th October with the single "As Time Goes By" released on on 1st November. Track listing: 1. As Time Goes By 2. The Way You Look Tonight 3. Easy Living 4. I'm In The Mood For Love 5. Where Or When 6. When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful 7. Sweet And Lovely 8. Falling In Love Again 9. Time On My Hands 10. Lover Come Back To Me 11. Miss Otis Regrets 12. Love Me Or Leave Me 13. You Do Something To Me 14. Just One Of Those Things 15. I really wish someone in this town would get on the ball and announce when they will be on sale! I think the Opera House will be a great place to see Bryan. It has a wonderful and elegant ambience about it. It certainly does not lend itself to rock and roll, but for the type of set it seems Bryan will be doing it sounds perfect! Finally, it doesn't suprise me that he chose Detroit. This is a music loving town, and people here seem to embrace all genres. I'm always amazed when I talk to my friends in Chicago and find out that shows like Elvis Costello don't sell out, but you can barely get a ticket when he comes to the Motor City. About Japanese released CDs, "Manouna E.P"(8 Ferry's rare track) may be Japanese limited release (but it will be avaiable outside Japan). Among my friends, most popular RM album will be Flesh and Blood, but this may be uncommon. I'll definitely be at the Anaheim show. The theatre is a unique choice but I"ve been doing some readings on the place an it seems perfect for a Ferry show. I don't know if I will make it to the LA show because I have school on Thursday. I'd love to meet some SoCal Roxy/Ferry fans though! I bought it anyway and its awful - which means it will become a rarity and I must try to get it autographed ! On another tack - Brasilian TV showed a repeat of the BBC documentary about John Cale tonight. A Lot of footage of the velvet Underground and Lou Reed as youd expect. I noticed that when Lou Reed commented on John Cales 3 albums for Island records in 74, 75, 76, he said "It (John Cale) seemed at the time to be letting the chips fall where they may" Does anybody know whether BF pinched the lyric from somebody else or whether this is a sideways complement from Lou Reed by repeating it out of context. John Cale also still reminds me of Eddie J. when hes playing strings Pip pip Chris Measures Isao Niwa wrote: > > Hi, Gene, > > > Thanks for the infomation, Isao.
