It was a cut and paste job of the Roxy Music Story yet the last 10 minutes focussing on the new album was very interesting. Bryan mentioned the input of a guy called Colin Goode (sp?) whose piano playing formed the base of most of the songs. The three tracks played - what a bonus ! - had, to my ears, very different arrangements. Easy Living was very joyful and upbeat, with a kinda New Orleans jazz feel and the Maestro's breathy barritone delivery almost echoes Satchmo. Where or When is one of those painfully beautiful cuts that has the vocals pitched a little higher, sad and wistful, not unlike the attitude of "Sonnet." This will be a favourite in Avalonia for years to come. I was nervous about his interpretation of "As Time Goes By." Lets face it, it is such a standard. Every cocktail bar tinkler across the globe plonks out this one every night. I'm delighted to say that, whilst faithful to Sam's arrangement, Bryan's vocal phrasing throws in the odd pleasant surprise, and the song stands up. "If I had a Pound for every taxi driver who said "Didn't you used to be Bryan Ferry...."" he chuckled. I don't think the cabbies will have that query on their lips this Christmas with ATGB top of the Hit Parade ! pip pip Martineaux - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 09:14:10 +0100 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] QuestionsQuestions Hubbard - ---------- >From: jspellman >To: avalon@smoe.org >Subject: Re: [AVALON] QuestionsQuestions >Date: Sat, Sep 25, 1999, 10:35 pm > > Another question, but I'm sure someone out there knows, > - Who played the sparse but tasteful guitar solo at the end > of "More Than This"? Hi Greg Much as I empathise with your adoration of this album I think you've overlooked the importance of the lyrics of this title track. This is the most autobiographical of all his pieces, being, of course, a testiment to the life (and death of his father.) The first verse is very dark, "Laid behind the frame" has Frederick, having already passed to the other side, lying in the coffin.... The reference to "sin" is familiar to all of us with parents from a different age. "You don't even know my name" a lament to the fairweather friends who attend the service. The second stanza has Fred reminiscing, worldweary, grumbling as old me do. "Death is a friend I've yet to meet," mirrors Psalm's valedictory "One day His house will be my home." Why is it called "Boys and Girls"? I wonder if this was one of old Fred's expressions, about Bry and his sister, about "Youth today", an affectionate admonishment. Either way the lyrics of this number bear study and inspection. His father's passing affected him deeply and I'm sure he agonised over these lines. Mine's a dry vodka martini made with Tanqueray Sterling and served with a twist of lime not an olive, please. I like the reviews. What a Wonderful World is the obvious favorite on the album. But the In Crowd starts the album on such a high that it sets the pace for the rest of it all. The closing song slows down the pace, turns reflective, bounces back and swings into the groove. SOme of the slower songs on the album are harder for me to get into. NEil __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Although I prefer the more urban, electronic rhythmic Ferry which stretches right back to Same Old Scene and includes the albums Boys & Girls, Taxi and Mamouna there is definitly a place on this long term journey of Bryans for a short term stop off to deliver an old fashioned album like this. I loved the energy and exuberence of Taxi, typical of a singer who is just so relieved to have gotten something together again and that is exactly what I hear on the mini preview to ATGB. It sounds like a delightfully relaxed and refreshing Ferry with some great playing going on around him. Bryan is probably better qualified than anyone else in the game at the moment to make a record like this and it's great to go back in time with your favourite singer and discover these beautiful old pieces. Going by this I think the upcoming tour will be a very intimate affair and I really cannot wait. I, for one, will waltz all the way into the millenium with this record. It's nice to know that Bryan Ferry is "Easy Living" again. I agree entirely - it's Bryan's intimate and rather passionate knowledge of the originals that sets this album apart from similar output from other artists. This seems to me to be an attempt to create a 30s album, not a 90s album of 30s songs with hugely lavish production and overly elaborate voclas. The emphasis seems to be keeping it simple - for no other reason other than to replicate a truly 1930s feel. Very intense I agree, the song comes to life live. If you can get your hands on the Newtown video, it's the second song. Neil Hubbard playing electric acoustic, lots of echo on the vocals and it sounds much less sterile and programmed than the B&G version. The climax is the end when Ferry appears to lose himself in the moment screaming painfully "Eeeh yeeh ahh" etc...I think it's the perfect 2nd song of a set. The reference to "sin" is familiar to all of us with Well, I am no expert on the details of Ferry's life but I have to say that I cannot see in any way how this is a testament to his dad's life. In fact, I couldn't disagree more that this song is about the death of BF's dad. The only death I can think of Ferry being interested in is la petite mort, and the double entendre of "laid behind the frame" certainly sets the tone of the song. It's a song about obsession with a touch of malevolence that I find odd in a Ferry song (although I suppose it fits in with the general feeling of this particular album). As for the possible familial meaning of the title, well, uh, let's just say that listening to this song has never once led me to think "Hey! I think I should call my dad."
