I have to respond at this early hour, in case my time at the spa later this morning somehow manages to make me less cranky for the rest of the day. And to say that yes, I am shivering, but it's not necessarily with dread. I mean, there is a chance that this could really be a wonderful project. Phrases like a "sense of distance but without irony" do give me hope, you know, especially when seen in counterpoint to the frightening stories of people thinking this was some record unearthed _in situ_ from the 1930s. Because even though I don't listen to the radio a lot these days, I can't remember that kind of record as storming the top of the pops (although the link to the McKellan "Richard III" is pretty revealing). But what I'm most upset about from that articles is that it dissed Gene Kelly. Philistines! It sounds like Ferry is working toward a total contrast between the multi-track overproduction of his last album, like he is trying to go from making gilded rococo sofas to simple craftsman chairs. Or do you think the furniture- making analogy is inappropriate for Ferry? Ciao! Thanks for the nifty read! Just to tell Heather that I am flattered by the Vapor comparisons but I agree entirely with Arnie. Vapor is on another planet compared to me and everyone else for that matter. He'll probably shit himself when he sees he's been compared to a damn Irish student bum. Anyway I think old Jimmy is catching a bit of the Bryan Ferry syndrome, knowing that he has to produce the crown jewels every time he appears and therefore only making annual visits. Yes, I'm afraid in football terms Vapor is the Premiership, I'm the Conference. Kicki, alright I left out three months but aren't all awards a sham in any case with the exception of The Mercury Music Prize (being honest here despite what the nominated musicians seemed to think). > >Mr. Mc Ginley, what *did* you expect at a gig organised by Nick Cave? > Your right enough here Bahi. If I had stood back and thought about it for one minute I would have realised. But after well over four years of waiting I think I'd have been on the plane even if Idi Amin had been organising the event. Funny enough I'm actually a fan of Nick Cave and I thought he performed very well that night, as of course did the hilarious Jarvis Cocker whom I also like. Ferry just seemed a bit out of place on a night like this. Death is a theme he's never explored before and probably one that he should stay away from in the future as well. I'd certainly be interested to here what fellow RFH goers think of the performance now that they've heard it a few times (I havent sent for the ASSH cd yet) and also what everybody else thinks. BTW I don't think this has been mentioned before but there is a Harry Smith website with a few reviews of the night at: http://www.harrysmitharchives.com On a brighter note I think this album will be a good listen and the accompanying tour should be the live experience that I've been waiting for. Thanks to Richard for info on Bryan Ferry Solo. I presumed this was the edited BF Story again and wasnt going to bother tuning in. But the Saturday night Belfast binge is going to have to be delayed by an hour or so if we are indeed going to get something new tomorrow night. This is what John wrote: "Could we complile 100 questions that we would never get asked by interviewers." Hm. That WE never get asked by interviewers? Never mind. I would like to ask: 1) Which is your all time favourite self-penned song? _Is_ there such a song, or is it constantly changing..? 2) What material sounds most dated to Ferry today - "The Bob Medley" or "Cry, Cry, Cry"? "Avalon"? 3) Is there a song he wishes he'd never written? Which one? 4) During the last 15 years or so, songwriting and recording has obviously become a very slow process for Ferry. Why? How could he produce such an amount of material in the first five years in the 70's? Did he have a much clearer image then of what he wanted to put on record or what? And on and on and on. /Kicki G - a journalist myself, mind you... - ------------------------ Kicki Gustafsson, Östersunds-Posten 063-16 16 51 http://www.op.se http://www.torget.se/users/k/KickiG (privat hemsida) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 14:21:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Neil Ashar Subject: Re: [AVALON] This is too good... - --- Kicki Gustafsson wrote: > I especially liked this one: > > Complementing this highly professional act is Mike's ability to > communicate > with his audience on all levels. > Hm... _all_ levels?? What contemporary artists do you like to listen to? Whom would you like to work with? Do you feel that there is still a market for the greatest hits albums with which you feel compelled to come out every 1.5 years? People have alluded to Mamouna as a commercial failure (although well rcved critically), but on the basis of the last fifteen years, one doesn't see much evidence that you care for commercial success: two albums of original work, one cover album, and about ten greatest hits compilations. Is the personal experimentation which your later albums display more important than commercial success? You never show up anymore on the top 100 richest rock star lists. How much are you really worth? (just kidding) Neil __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
