Of course, it depends how you define your terms. Many of BF's "covers" > albums could be considered "roots" recordings if you define your terms > broadly enough. (He says with tongue planted fairly squarely in cheek.) you're right about the ferry solo recordings; they often reveal his musical influences. of course, he usually reworks the arrangements so dramatically that the cover version bears no resemblance to the original. but that's what makes them fun. i'm usually more interested in the synthesis of a new sound than in a return to roots. if i want to go back to an artist's roots, i'll generally go buy the original material and listen to that. hence the expansion in recent years of my music collection to include frank sinatra, george gershwin, cole porter, robert johnson and antonio carlos jobim. > I like Los Lobos a lot and have several of their albums, but when they put > out their "roots" album several years back, I heard some of it and passed on > it. Acoustic? I've heard acoustic Roxy before and while I enjoyed it, it wasn't as good has the layered electric sound. I suppose these artist-types are allowed to shake things up once in a while. But still, the Roxy that inspired The Chamelions and The Cure (who need to lighten up, they're pushing 20 years of being angst-ridden 15 year-old pubesents that are old before their time), and my personal favorite, The Smiths. Well, that's a long enough tangent, I'm waiting for some RealAudio samples of the new album, despite doubts, I'm hopeful. I saw the episode where Bert Spooner gets discovered after singing in a company talent show. He is invited to sing "La Chanson D'Amour" on a local TV variety show, but the act is ruined when an audio tape played at twice the normal speed, while he is lipsynching makes him look silly. Anyway, I do not mention this show because of its brilliant plot, but because of the absolute resemblance of Spooner, in the final scene, to Bryan Ferry in the early days. Spooner comes onstage in a space-age satin jumpsuit, hair slicked and pompadoured, with a bunch of makeup. His backup singers are women, but they all wear feather boas a la Eno. One of the guys in Spooner's "band" wears a white top hat and suit. In short, it is all very glam and very Roxy. I wonder, did Bryan Ferry define a sort of generic "rock star type" that was used a lot in media and television in Britain in the 70's. I am convinced that whoever produced this episode of "Are You Being Served" could not have done so without having a close knowledge of Roxy Music's look and style at the time. Apparently he's a big BF fan (so UK list members listen out in the coming weeks - he's adept at getting big names to come on the show and give live acoustic performances) and decided to have a party to which the maestro was invited. The party was fancy dress but Bryan turned up in some cool evening wear looking, well like Bryan Ferry. As the night wore on a karaoke session got under way whereupon another guest, slightly the worse for drink, approached BF, thinking he was a guest who'd come as Ferry. "Come on, give us a song" she said. "Oh I don't think so" replies Bryan modestly. "Oh don't be shy" she continues, "we're all crap here!" If it's true, it's priceless.
