It's highly unlikely. I think we all take a peverse interest in wondering how the more outre recordings would sound with an orchestra and a largely acoustic band. The reality, of course, is more likely to be renditions of five songs that lend themselves most easily to this style of the 30s arrangement. My guess is four obvious ones, say, (Take your pick from these) These Foolish Things You Go To My Head Will You Still Love Me Avalon Smoke Gets in Your Eyes Just One Look Song For Europe and one wild card .. Your Painted Smile Pearl (you never know, Puxley might peruse this list..) Bete Noire Spin Me Round Had lunch with Robert Fedder yesterday and we swapped war stories over Thai delicacies. He lent me a bootleg video of the Mamouna tour at Hammersmith, October 1994. As I was there in row H it made for quite sentimental late night viewing at Stockman Mansions. I'd forgotten what a great line-up this leg of the tour had ; 3 Guitarists, Hubbard, Williams and Kamen. As Robert remarked this first part of the Tour was far more bluesey than the spacey Trower inspired second half. Remember somewhere along the World Tour he dropped the basin-fringed demi-God Hubbard in favour of the frankly wino visaged features of Trower. Each style has it's individual merits. Neil's licks in Windswept and Avalon are at once laid back and seminal. And Bryan always pulls his auto-erotic suffocation face as Neil plucks those Cooderesque notes. Avalonians familiar with the Wolfyhamton CD boot will have enjoyed the contrast of Trower's spacial, distorted style. On balance, and perhaps this is because I've O.D.d on Neil over the years, I find Trower's crazy mad-axemanship slightly preferable, particulary set against Williams' wonderful funk groove. Any thoughts ? I'm hoping for Sultanesque, with Mr. Cale helping out on arrangements. Are we sure that there's to be no Meltdown banjo dronist? There must be some mistake - things just wouldn't be the same without him. (At the RFH that evening, Robert managed to persuade a member of staff to show us the running order and on it was scrawled "BANJO" next to the list of Bryan's musicians. We became quite excited about this but later realised that it probably referred to someone by the name of Banjo. We weren't expected a sea-going Ferry to appear on stage, after all. But no, when Bryan sang, a banjo dronist sat down and droned and I, for one, was happy.) Speaking of Cale reminds me of his old Latin axeman.. has anyone heard an early copy of Manzanera's new one? There are clips available for download from his web site and a very positive review in (Allan Jones's) Uncut magazine, which even added a track from it to this month's cover CD. Apparently available from Phil's site starting Monday.
