"Obviously inferior product." I'm not sure we all agree with that Eric. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. And our good friends in the music press have also tended to be less impressed with the last four Ferry albums. What I love about this community, Avalonia, is that, rightly or wrongly, we are still consistently thrilled and entertained by Ferry's work. I honestly prefer listening to Mamouna rather than the Roxy Music Album. I think Bete Noire is just about better than Siren. Taxi has greater highs than Another Time, (albeit probably lower lows.) When I make a compilation tape for the car it invariably contains songs from all the 27 years of recorded material, with no discernible favouring of that prolific early 70s period. That would certainly not be true of the Thin White Duke or Myopia Is True. Indeed in recent years I've stated to find that chorus / guitar solo/ chorus/ sax solo / chorus / syn solo / chorus / napoleon solo prevalent in some of the earlier Roxy stuff start to irritate me. They're still great songs but to my ears a tad dated. I do happen to agree with you about Bowie and Costello and their creative tailspin but I wouldn't bore THEIR fans with a rant about "obviously inferior product." Avalonia isn't a museum. And I thought Mamouna was a courageous, complex and rather inaccessible "product," far from the "market orientated gloop" that you dismiss the work as. Taxi was, on the surface, familiar territory for people who loved 60s and 70s R'n'B but Trower's leftfield production and the Maestro's bizarre reinventing of the songs combine to take the album away from MOR status. The late 80s and mid 90s tours were exceptionally good, and similarly unafraid to alienate a mainstream audience with the attack and edge of the performances. The new album, I feel sure, will contain several pearls that will sit happily in the RM/BF treasure trove. And to Sir James Spellman I would say that Ferry is fairly unique in that his creative facilities at fiftysomething are as high as in his early thirties ; what's different is that he is now (and has been for 15 years ) petrified about putting out imperfect material and no longer feels comfortable churning out ironic statements about modern consumerism. The newer lyrics reflect abstract notions of lost romance, fate, shifting power within relationships etc rather than witty observations on a life of Plenty. Can't we run a separate list for folks who think post '79 output is obviously inferior market orientated gloop and let the rest of us gleefully countdown the days to the release of "As Time Goes By." ? This way, they become familiar with the different areas and what stock to bring. I have been told so many times that they have stuff back at the shop or home but didn't bring it.I'm often told ' we don't get much call for Roxy stuff ' well start calling! The dealers can't hear your fingers as you flick through the box of singles. I am well know for Roxy/Ferry stuff to the dealers and always look out for me and bring stuff for me which might have been on a wants list I gave them at the previous fair. Generally it's just your luck. You can easily pick up stuff like the standard issue UK 7" singles, the odd promo some foreign picture sleeves and 12". Bootlegs usually have a small shelf life in that the people who make them stick them out in one go so that there isn't a trail to follow to find out where they come from. My advice to anyone looking for bootlegs CDs is to buy it when you see it and don't expect to see it at the next fair. When th Aston Villa show came out, I could have got a copy at every other stall but now it's just your Donald Duck if you find one now. The Super Golden Radio Show CDs seem to be an exception to this in that I have seen them at about every fair I've been to for the past 10 years. I usually go to the Inverness fair and the SECC fair which is huge. Small local fairs really just deal in second hand albums and CD and brand new CDs at cheap prices. The big fairs like the SECC is more for rarities, memorabilia etc. J.O'B at his tea. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 99 18:20:37 UT From: "Robert Fedder" Subject: FW: [AVALON] Bombs Away Stealth bombers? Anyway, what fun is there in thinking that the best is all in the past. Even if true, I'd rather dream a little. BTW, I think the last few albums (recorded over a mere 15 years) are rather good. And no. I'm not a Dance Away fan. I suppose it wouldn't be right if I didn't stick my 2 cents worth in and say I like some of elvis's later stuff as much as any of it. Veronica was catchy, Everyday I Write the Book, I Wanna Be Loved, The Only Flame in Town. Yep I dig the King, saw him a few times, an unbelievable vocalist. His voice just wanders around, he never hits a strait note, always bending, streaching, changing. Magnificent vocalist. Can't say enough about him, really.
