Edited highlights ... With a new album of elegant classics and a look to match, Roxy Music's man in the black tie is back to his suave, sartorial best. ... The first thing you notice about Ferry is his hair. Or rather, his lack of it. the famous fringe is gone. That limp curtain of oily barnet, the calling card of Ferry's louchely cultivated style ... has been chopped back to a boyish, mussy mess. It appears to be Ferry's take on the "bed hair" look as worn by the likes of Gay Dad, but is of course executed with a little more panache ... ... The accent has been tweaked too, and seems to be doing a sort of reverse Jarrow March, making its way from smart Kensington back up to Ferry's native Northeast. Quite appropriately for Ferry, it is when he says "Cartier" ("Ca-ee-ay") that his Geordie is most pronounced. ... ... The daunting dilemma currently wracking the shelves and rails of Ferry's well stocked wardrobe is what to wear for the coming-out of his latest long-player ... Entitled As Time Goes By, it is a collection of Thirties cover songs ... So does Ferry have a look planned for this album? "Well ... there is a tradition with those kind of songs that really suggests some kind of formal wear. I've always wanted to dress in that jazz tradition, like Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. I mean, with this sort of music you wouldn't want to wear leather clothes would you? And certainly nothing corny like a monocle, or singing through a megaphone ... It'll probably involve some sort of ... dinner jacket." (YAWN - BF is pictured wearing a £1,200 Armani black dinner suit with shawl collar). ... ... The album accompanying this style is equally well turned-out. Doing an album of Thirties classics might sound a bit of a Peter Skellern-ism, but put aside your K-Tel prejudices and imagine Ferry providing the soundtrack for a shelved Woody Allen film, circa Broadway Danny Rose, and you'll get the picture. Ferry's voice is perfect for these songs ... the stand out track is "I'm in the mood for love" a lilting, libidinous bossa nova which find the fragile "mock balladeer" delivering his languid vocal through teeth clenched tightly together. It starts off fairly straight, but slowly honey-drips into a dreamy, druggy bump and grind. There's even some sexy Euro bird quietly rutting away in French somewhere at the back of the mix. It's music to have your earlobes tongued by. ... ... The ultimate endorsement of the collection's authenticity came when Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records..., played the album to a group of industry friends at a Manhattan dinner party. "Ertegun kidded that he'd discovered some recordings of this amazing jazz singer from the Thirties. For a while at least, the whole party fell for it." ____________________________________ IMPORTANT - this e-mail and the information that it contains may be confidential, legally privileged and protected by law. I had the great luck and opportunity to deliver a copy of Han's remaster CD 'All Styles...' to Martini (any time any place any where?) Stockcube by hand last night, whereupon (the gentlemen that he is) he introduced me to his friend from college days Tim - who is the chap with the video facilities that is involved in 'the great video project'. So I spent a very enjoyable evening having a full sneak preview of the huge collection of snippets, outtakes and cringe-makers that you people have collected from all around the world and sent in. Martin has risen to the enormous task of Executive Editor and committed the bits he thinks people will want to see (and I have to say I agree with most if not all of his selections) to DVCAM tapes ready for the final edit session to splice it all together. Tim is a busy full time editor for UK commercial TV and is already regularly working until 3am on 'proper stuff' so it is going to be a while yet before the 'top and tailing' is done to the collection - it already fills three tapes - - that is about three hours long. BUT it will be worth the wait (all hail Martin!!) There are some real corkers in this compilation but the most surreal thing I have ever seen is the cringeworthy French soap opera acting of our Bry - this is beyond belief and it's all thanks to J O'B that we even have witness of it (where does he get all this stuff?). There are also some really bootleg-ish sequences caught for all time on VHSs the world over from variety shows, pop shows and concerts that are unmissable. The whole thing will be a real collectors delight but you must not expect the highest technical quality. VHS is a very convenient format but does not help when it comes to recovering info for a compilation - traditionally the output of a VHS machine is difficult for a broadcast standard editing system to lock to and this will be noticeable on some sequences and then there is standard conversion [wouldn't it have been nice if the world could've had _one_ TV standard]. Bear in mind that _any_ sight of some of these rare 'events' (and rare is what they most definitely are) is a miracle - so don't whinge when you are squinting through the snow - it will definitely be better enjoyed on a small screen - not on your home cinema system or 54" projection screen system. Anyway - I just thought y'all might like an update on how it's going.......and Martin, keep up the good work!!! Maybe it'll make a nice xmas gift or a pleasant intro to the new millenium? TTFN Andy Cooper, News at Ten, Central London P.S. Erik S - you'd better watch out at Bumbershoot for the spanking Jesa (this is just too surreal - that's twice in one e-mail!!!!). (Uh, you do realize that the video was Aretha Franklin, yes?) Colleen Colleen and Heather: You're both wrong on this one. Look very closely at the lady singing in the video. It was Natalie Cole who did the song ( which was her version of a Bruce Springsten hit) AND the video of Pink Cadillac. A big hit for her during that period. Aretha's song (and video) was Freeway of Love which included in the lyrics-"We'll go riding on the Freeway of Love in a Pink Cadillac". This was a big record for Aretha as well. Joan Armatrading was never "popular" enough to have been a MTV staple becuse her music was never MTV "type" material. VH1 yes, maybe, but not MTV.
