This in turn will determine what back catalog will be released. But judging by what I`ve seen and heard from more than one video rental, the high quality picture/sound isn`t a strong enough selling point to entice the mainstream public into crossing over to a media that can`t be recorded....a major drawback. I mean, even laser disc offered better quality *and* allowed recording, but look where they ended up (E-Bay?). After 20+ years of freedom to record whatever they want, the trade off will have to be spectacular.......more so than the marketing guru`s "New and Improved" idea of adding extra footage to DVD only libraries in an attempt to sweeten the pot. I don`t know about the rest of you, but I find it hard to get excited about the DVD release of "You`ve Got Mail" despite the fact it`s now visually stunning, in earth-rattling hi-fi and with 15 extra minuets. Another consideration is that no one wants to end up stuck with another BetaMax (for those of us old enough to have actually been stuck with a BetaMax, anyway). Then again, there`s always E-Bay. These standards are based upon geographical areas of the world. It goes something like N. America is Zone 1, Europe is Zone 2, Asia/Pacific is Zone 3, etc. (not sure of exact numbering system). The reason for this is to discourage import/export of DVDs into other zones prior to the release dates the studios desire. This is due to the fact that DVDs are often released in N. America long before theater release in other zones. (and visa versa) To get around this (isn't there always a way?) is to buy a modified, black market DVD player that reads all 6 formats. Kind of like getting that black box for free cable! I can't place the Japan album it was on right now (I should be able to, bigtime Sylvian fan that I am). Nico did some very nice live versions of it throughout her solo career, also. (Not surprising, since she sang the original version with the Velvets.) But my very favorite cover version was done by UK folk-rockers the Oysterband w/June Tabor, where they replaced John Cale's driving, repetitive piano part that anchored the song w/a tribal drumbeat that worked quite well. And while Tabor is probably technically a much better singer than Nico, she captured the same icy coolness quite well. Of course the original still stands head and shoulders above any cover I have ever heard, and will probably always do so. (Apply as many IMHO's as necessary.) I was actually fairly disappointed with Ferry's version, probably because I was expecting too much. (You know, your favorite singer doing one of your all time favorite songs... A perfect scenario for a letdown.) Be well. You're right it's not a combination that would seem normal to most people, but it's seamless for the most part and works just beautifully. The lead off track on the new CD features Sinead O'Connor adding her distinctive voice to the mix. It just soars. I'm from the eastern side of the state (Spokane) and I really wanted to go to WOMAD, but could only afford one festival in Seattle in a months time so I opted for Bumbershoot this weekend instead. I don't think I actually want to hear too much about WOMAD, as I'll just end up kicking myself. But I've been looking forward to Bumbershoot for about the last 51 weeks (in other words, since last years Bumbershoot) (For those outside the Pacific Northwest of the US, Bumbershoot is an Arts and Music festival for 4 days (Labor Day weekend) in Seattle center. A day pass gets you access to any show all day long with musicians on at least a dozen different stages around the center and new acts every couple hours. And literature, poetry, fine arts, film, street performers, etc... This year has Billy Bragg, Sonic Youth, Pharoah Sanders, Robyn Hitchcock, Roy Harper, Steve Winwood, Violent Femmes, Tom Tom Club, Jimmy Cliff, just for a random sampling of some of the more recognizable names. And lots of lesser known acts who are just as interesting, or often more so.) I did see Joan A at Bumbershoot in '92 (I think) and while I like her records, she made a much stronger impression on me live. A really strong, straightforward, honest performer. Bye. Nope, 'Retha was "Freeway of Love" (which does follow the title line with "in a pink cadillac"); it was Natalie Cole who had the hit with Springsteen b-side "Pink Cadillac." Far as I know, Joan Armatrading wasn't around for either of these! I sure hope that a lot of these remarks were jokes. Else I'd be inclined to think that gratuitous rudeness and ridiculing other people's taste in music (personally I never cared for Joan at all, but I hardly see liking her as grounds for execution) were the list's hallmarks. later, Miles ====================================================== Miles Goosens UNlimited edition R.
