A wildchild friend of mine called Ingrid was Press Officer for a band called, I think, Hothouse. (Who later became M People to the delight of happy shiny people everywhere.) As luck would have it Hothouse were billed as support to the Maestro at his first London gig since Live Aid and I used all my wiles upon Ingred to score great seats for both nights at the London Palladium. But that wasn't all : She called in a few favours and managed to get me invited (+ a friend) to the "end of tour" party after the second gig at The Arts Club in Dover Street. The gold-rimmed invitation sits on my desk now. "Virgin Records and Bryan Ferry invite you to join him after his concert at the London Palladium on Thursday, December 15th at The Arts Club etc..." I took my dear Roxy pal Trisha, a lady in the epicentre of the catwalk model scene who would certainly raise an eyebrow at notions that Bryan is a ShyGuy, (SlutGuy would be more apposite in her experience...) So I don my best chunky black suit and white shirt, the french cuffs dangling elegantly over my wrists, hammer a few cocktails in Covent garden with the gorgeous Trisha who's decked out in gold lame with Jerryesque hair. All is well on Planet Martino. To the Paladium where, quelle surprise, we are blown away by the gig. Limbo is the best opener since Sentimental Fool on the Siren tour. Hubbard is awesome on Windswept. Vocals better than ever. Mackay comes on for the encores and Bry/Andy look shocked by the huge reception. They hug. Moist eyes all round. Black cab to the Arts Club. Free drinks. Oh dear. No sign of floppy haired genius or associates. Time goes by, as they say. There is a buzz at the neo-classical stairwell. We look down through the bannisters to see a tall left-bank beatnik ascending the stairs, bedecked in vast duffle coat, a preposterous brown woolly scarf (as knitted by your Gran for those chilly cycle rides to school) wrapped thrice round his velvet larynx, and, of course, that amusing peaked cap plopped on his bonce. We give him space. I spot Dave Gilmour, looking like a Life Insurance broker, and ask him why he's not playing on this tour. "Bryan can't afford me," he chortles. We're now fairly pissed. I notice that most of the crowd - A&R guys, Virgin execs, PR types- have caught the last train to their Surrey mansions and there's just the band, us, and a dozen other wasters. Dinner is served ! We are placed at the end of a long table with perhaps 16 people. I'm sitting next to one of the three African girl singers. Around the table sit all the band + Andy and his wife, Price, Gilmour, and a few I don't recognise. Trish and I are giggly drunk. We keep muttering to one another "Stay cool is still the main rule." We tuck into our langoustines. Bry is at the far end of the table. No Lucy. He's deep in conversation with a couple of guys. Looking quite grumpy really. Andy Newmark is the life and soul of the party. Jeff Thall is straight out of Spinal Tap. I swap pleasantries with the backing singer, Yannick. My slurred delivery does not lend itself to romance. (Regrets, I've had a few.) Trish and I agree that if we hang around much longer we are in danger of becoming sad liggers, abusing hospitality etc. We slope away, without a bye or leave, into the frosty night, wondering how we'll describe our adventure to our work colleagues in 4 hours time. Or perhaps our electric friends a decade later ... pip pip, Mart - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 08:48:21 -0400 From: "Angel Colon" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Getcha, Getcha, Ya Yaas........ That's why Jerry left Bryan...he was > too sweet of a guy for her and she couldn't appreciate that! I think YOU'RE > all wet.... I will agree he shows both sides. I think every human feels love and lust, just different percentages. Bryan a sweet guy? Do you know him personally? I don't care what he is like, I like his music. The Jerry Hall fallout was probably his fault as much as hers, he didn't appreciate her either, it just wasn't meant to be. What bothers me is how you want to be judge and jury. If I'm a committed husband that doesn't cheat, does that mean I shouldn't listen to the Stones? And maybe I shouldn't be allowed to listen to Chrissie Hynde anymore because I eat a cheeseburger once in a while. Music is for everyone and the beliefs and morals of the artist and listener shouldn't matter. Martin, I know these reminiscences are true, but frankly I wouldn't care if they were complete fiction, they are simply the best. If you continue to toss these idly into cyber space, I may be forced to put electronic impulse to virtual paper and report not only on the occasion I sang Love is the Drug while Paul Thompson sat next to me drumming as only he can, but also the outcome of the night I went to a Christmas fancy dress party as "first album Andy Mackay" with the very beautiful Miss Fenton on my arm attired as a quite stunning replica of Kari Ann. There may be some relationship with the record company, I'm not sure. The pictures and logos are all pretty old - again indicative that this isn't official - at a guess I'd say the pic on the website / poster is c. Bete Noire, so around 1987.
