Great packaging and excellent sound quality, so clear you can taste what they are eating in the resturaunt at the begining of Remake Remodel. the albums are just like mini versions of the original Island releases. Gatefold sleeves for the first 3 and standard sleeves for 4&5. Country life has the lyrics as before but no lyrics on the other albums. The artwork looks as if it has been done from the original masters or at least cleaned up. This is notacable most on Roxy Music as it is mostly white. Some of the later pressings of that seemed to have lots of speckles across the sleeve, but these seemed to have gone. There is no Virginia Plain on the first album just like the original vynil, pity as this is one non album track that really fits with its contemporary album and wouldn't have been out of place. The walk up to the car at the start of Love Is The Drug is so clear and free of hiss that you can see what colour of shoes he's wearing. I look foward to the next 5 Regards John O'Brien - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 19:54:24 +0100 From: "Killip family" Subject: [AVALON] The Lost World of Avalonia Martin In your extensive and mouth-watering promo. for the forthcoming video meisterwork, you query the date of the Granada TV "On the Road" video and the version of Song For Europe thereon. I think this video was a recording of the Manchester Apollo concert on the "Manifesto" tour...unless, of course, Granada have covered Roxy more than once. There's certainly that reference to "Coronation St" and the red leather suit fits the bill. I've added snips from the "Without Walls" documentary on Richard Hamilton with fabulous old stills from student days. And I shall try to squeeze in the excellent "My Only Love" from the Dortmund gig.. even if you're unimpressed with the album track you'll love this. As usual, watch this space. My cousin married a Mancundian and couldn't believe I was a Roxy fan when he came to my house a few years ago. He told me he was a fan too and his eyes popped out his head when, as he was telling me about being in the front row at a gig in Manchester in 1979, I put on the tape where he could see himself in the front row at the encore. So there you have it, done and dusted, definately Manchester Appollo Regards John O'Brien - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 16:51:48 -0400 From: "Decophile" Subject: [AVALON] U.S. CD-R Copiers? If memory serves correctly, the concert was screened for the first time very soon after as I remember rushing home from the Roxy gig in Liverpool to see it. I have the ticket stub somewhere - I think I was around row 10 so fortunately viewers are spared the sight of me on the video. Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 03:26:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Heather Marie Buch Subject: Re: [AVALON] Blondie Very cool, Jas. Blondie is one of my heroines (no pun intended). She was from that Richard Hell/Ramones era of New York punk rock that I love so much, and she looked great when Warhol photographed here. She wasn't looking too great in that indie movie "Heavy" that came out a couple of years back, but I'm sure that was partly contrived. Never did get to the Riviera when I was in Chicago. What kind of place is it? Old? Hello to newly married lady: Well if you were familiar with the Uptown area (just north of Lincoln Park), which is where I live, the Riviera is in the same area as the Aragon ( I'm sure you had been there-right?) and the Uptown Theatre. All are around Lawrence and Broadway. In fact all three are within one block of one another. I live two blocks from all of them ( just right off my back door). The Riviera, like the now shuttered Uptown was a theatre that use to show feature films with occasional concerts. The Riviera converted over to a full dance club in the early eighties( one of the Chicago Bears was partner at the time). I found out Satuday night that Blondie first played the Riviera in 1977 openinp up for get this- Iggy POP!!!! So where was I while this occured? In Hollywood, Ca. I moved there in 1976 and came back to Chicago in 1978. I do not remember if this tour hit LA, but I was well aware of Blondie via Circus Magazine (or Hit Parader) and columnist Lisa Robinson ( who may have alerted me to Roxy in earlier articles). I miss that era too. I came of "age" during that period. I do regret not having seen the Sex Pistols when they played their final concert in San Francisco on Friday Jan. 13,1978 (coincidently- my birthday!). I did save that review though. Side note to other Avalonians. The Uptown Thearte, before it was shuttered in 1981(?) was the site of many concerts. One of those concerts featured Roxy Music during the 1979 Manifesto tour (Bryan had the red leather outfit on during the concert). I attended that one and it was after the concert that I had my "infamous" run in with Bryan in the back of his limo! I still have flashes of my brush with "greatness" as I pass the theatre everyday on my way to catch the train to work ( Heather -the CTA Red line to the Loop.) That's funny. To me, they were always "five dark-haired guys and a blonde." Kinda blows that image. But yeah, her songs are great, classics of the new wave era. Yeah I was surprised too to see Chris as the other "blondie"( or was it silver- he too has gotten older). Jimi Destri, Clem Burke and the new guys did have dark hair though. One final thought. As the rock and roll audiences start to get older, I noticed that some of them seem to forget how to dance. Some just stand there, with beer or ciggies in hand, and just stare at the band. Yes this was an audience with some age on it, I even saw some grannies in the back. I on the other hand dance ( even some pogoing!). I always have and hopefully always will. I appreciate that fact that the band, in this case Blondie, is up there giving it all it can and laying down great grooves hoping to get the audience involved. I wonder what they were thinking as they were watching the audience. Maybe it's just the Chicago audiences. This was the second concert, the last being the Pretenders three weeks ago, where a majority of the audience just stood there and barely moved. Hmm... Jobs, mortgages, kids, viagra,.... If this is the promise of middle age, then count me out.
