But then > again, Vegas is a parody of itself anyway. > > Heather You know, (slipping out of my customary lurkitude for a minute): Bryan Ferry already *has* done Vegas -- that's where I saw him during the Mamouna tour a few years back -- and though there might have been something a bit ironic about it in context, it really wasn't especially parodic (though I can maybe see someone saying that about the opening act, Combustible Edison). Based on my impressions of that performance and of the show a couple of nights later (at the Pantages in Hollywood), I'd say that when it comes to performing on stage Bryan Ferry's first and foremost a great entertainer who loves getting out there in front of an audience. That may be a little at odds with one or two of his other personae (the brooding and/or lovelorn aesthete, for example) but that's how it seems to work. And even if he does show up playing standards at some of these fabled "smoky lounges/theatres around the globe," including Las Vegas, it's unlikely to be some sort of bathetic flop into the pit: Ferry's too clear-eyed and, let's say, professional for that. Its great! Love the sour note at the >beginning of Psalm itself and Bryan of course in the infamous white dinner >jacket which by the way is or one of them at least is at the Chicago Hard >Rock cafe. The white tux outfit has always fascinated me and throws up many interesting contradictions about the man. In an interview with Jackie Collins (!) Ferry says, somwhat disingenuously, that the image was a millstone around his neck and was a stage costume no different from his many other guises. Which is simply not true. Why then did he reprise the outfit for the Avalon video and tour? And many other occasions inbetween ? I think the image works on about three levels. Firstly, and most obviously, as a homage to Rick in Casablanca. I don't think it would surprise any of us if he wore this outfit for the As Time Goes By tour, although, like the choice of material itself, we would be disappointed by a lack of innovation. The film is undoubtedly a huge influence on Bryan. The sense of cool. The smoky nightclub situation. The emotional quandry of his relationship with Ilse Lundt, (Which way to turn). The late night reverie. Secondly I think the tux works on a rather lowlife level. In another interview he claims that the image springs from a "Cunard" cruise crooner. (Cunard is/was a shipping line.) In other words an altogether less glamourous proposition : One imagines a singer past his prime getting work on a cruise ship, pulling on the moth-eared tux each night and crooning standards to a blue-rinse crowd. Thirdly, and this overlaps with the Cunard suggestion, is the image of the spivvy nightclub gigolo. The kind of unscrupolous, pussy-hound, bar shark characterized in James Ellroy and Raymond Chandler. The Psalm CD-Rom footage employs this attitude. If you haven't seen it Bryan snarls through a couple of the numbers. Bitter, sweaty and quite angry. The white tux is a symbol of faded glamour and jaded personality. This is not Rick or Sam Spade. This is a hired hand at an out of town mob convention.... pip pip Martinet - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 11:37:25 +0100 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] bing ferry (?) - ---------- >From: "Les Belikian" >You know, (slipping out of my customary lurkitude for a minute): >Bryan Ferry already *has* done Vegas Les You're far too intersting and informed to be a lurker. In fact, he's always hates touring, and that's one of the reasons he gave it up for ten years! Of course, the worst aspects of the experience aren't tjhe performing intself - but Ferry has frequently said that he's not a natural performer, and not comfortable on stage. But interestingly, I thought he was more relaxed on the MAMOUNA tour than I'd ever seen him before. So maybe at last he's getting to like it! My Roxy Remasters are still on backorder at A&B Sound. I got an email explaining how they were moving their website to their warehouse over the next few days, so orders are delayed. As for their cheap prices, it's just a combination of the US$ vs CAN$ exchange rate. They want to be the lowest price in canada (CDs are WICKED high there) on line, and we reap the benefits! Also, due to the historical connection to England, their releases sometimes mirror the UK catalog. For instance, I just found out that the McCartney remasters that originally only came out in the UK, came out in Canada as well. Consequently, you can get them cheap as a canadian domestic, rather than an expensive UK import. That's probably the deal with the Roxy Remasters as well. jon _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Anyone in the UK who ordered in response to Virgin's mailshot will have them by the end of next week (per Virgin).
