["Decophile" Subject: [AVALON] Heart still beating (NOT!) Hi all!, After seeking some advice here, I went ahead and ordered Psalm ( for Fl 11.90 ~ US$ 5.10) at my local records shop. He's now preparing a list of all Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry lp/mc/cd/dvd that are available. I will try and put the list on Avalon. Two weeks ago John O'Brien sent me sheet music from a lot of Roxy Music songs, I'm trying to sort that out for my bass! Thanx again John, although my family might disagree! I'm trying to put together an MP3 database of all Roxy Music/ Bryan Ferry songs and I listened (again) to 'Heart Still Beating' the live recording at Frejun(?). I know I might hurt some people, but I think the only good song on the CD is 'Like a Hurricane' from Neil Young! The rest of the songs are flat and uninspiring. I really miss a good drummer. Phil Manzanera sounds flat, Andy Mackay sounds so-so. Bass is ok (biased!). Maybe it is just me, but I miss a heart in this recording, or the heart is still beating, but hardly! Hope I don't offend to many of the Avalonians! There isn't anyone on the list who doesn't learn something from the list no matter how long they have followed Brother Bryan, Brother Phil & Brother Andy. So welcome aboard my good man. Most of them seem to be conflicting ideas on the merits of Bryan doing this album at this stage in his career. Every point being made both positive and negative is valid in my mind. In the 30's era, you had singer, songwriters(sometimes a 2 part team of lyricist & composer), band members, arrangers & conductors. Each one a craftsman in his own field. Songs were written purely as a manuscript and the better ones got recorded by more artists. The singers would use these well written songs as a vehicle for there fine voice and the rest of the aforementioned team would hone their craft to the requirements of the recording/show to make such high standerd recoords/performances. Bryan's own music is a combination of his voice, production, originality etc, with no one thing taking centre stage which in its own way is a craft. On As Time Goes By, assuming it's done in a traditional jazz way, Bryan is putting his voice forward as the selling point the way people in this era bought Ella Fitzgerald Sinatra, Crosby etc records. This alone is a brave move in his part and will possibly show the rest of the world that a lot of the 93 artists that were in front of him in the Q Poll recently should have been behind him. Bryan's voice has never sounded more like a singers voice than it does now (Sonnet and I'll See You Again prove that by far). It's this that I look forward to more than anything else. Bryan is about to stand in the same stage as Crosby, Sinatra, Fitzgerald etc (The singers singers) When a martian arrives from outer space and asks Bryan "what do singers do on this planet?" he will play them 'As Time Goes By' and thay will go back home with a pretty good idea what a singer is. One wee bit of trivia is that although I am not familiar with the song As Time Goes By, I have a review of the first Roxy album and it mentioned that there is a refrain from As Time Goes By at the end of 2HB (Can anyone confirm this). I would like to ask of the negative vibes about ATGB (which I understand and respect), Is there any list member not going to buy it ??? Emphatically, no! Though I was initially disappointed with Taxi, I have always enjoyed many of Ferry/Roxy's covers. Anyone want to venture aTop Ten cover songs list (if it hasn't been done already)? I suggest we offer rationale with our lists to make them more interesting. He doesn't have to prove that to me. Is there any list member not going to buy it ??? Of course I will buy it, and I'm sure Ferry's voice will be beautifully spotlit and foregrounded on this album. Ferry has a wonderful voice. Yet, I know that Ferry is not just an voice, but a writer. Sure, I like the old songs, but I'm just so greedy and addicted to Ferry's poetry that I hope there will be more someday, even if he has already given us too much. I think I could be like one of those women who followed Pablo Neruda around in Il Postino - if I weren't married. Ferry's words are magic!!! I`ve also considered putting together a MP3 database but decided to hold off until there is a more agreed upon format (Xing vs. Fanhuser(?)). Actually, I got tired of the endless bickering over these formats and just abandoned the whole idea. This wassome months ago and at that time the debates raging on the MP3 news groups about which was the best were quite bitter. Posting to MP3 binary groups always seemed to spark a flame war over the format used. Personally, I used the Xing format (MusicMatch Jukebox 3: a blind choice) and was unable to detect any degradation in sound quality. It is very fast and has a great ripper, but some are adamantly opposed to postings using this encode because it`s so fast. They feel that if it doesn`t take an hour per song, it somehow degrades the sound. Whatever! The way I look at it is this: if superior sound is what you`re looking for, then buy the damn CD. I then started looking into Real Audio. It allows streaming audio which plays almost immediately and can be easily recorded while playing. Then I started putting in 65 hours a week at work and never got back to it. >I know I might hurt some people, > but I think the only good song on the CD is 'Like a Hurricane' from > Neil Young!
