Loved the Vapour thingy. Interesting guy. Hi to Allison, the new young-un! When I was a dj a few years back, I had a listener request Roxy - she was your age too. I'm curious as to what kind of music you listen to, new or "classic", and what about hearing the 2 Roxy tunes prompted you to seek out more Roxy. Siren is a great starting point - kind of surprised you didn't start with STREET LIFE. Glad to see that Velvet Goldmine has converted at least one person... I'm a big fab4 fan, but I don't think Sgt Pepper is all that either. BUT, Len-Mac's abilities and contributions to music cannot be denied. To do so is just plain ignorant. I'm moderately excited about the new covers album, but have my reservations. Does the working with a jazz outfit thing fit into how this will sound in some way? I didn't like TAXI all that much (about 3 songs were good IMHO), and if it's going to "sound" like that, I'm not that keen on it. And I wish he'd do my favorite song from that period, "Stardust". I'm sure he'd nail it. I do have a tape of the Live Aid (original!), but unfortunately, MTV, in their infinite wisdom at the time, gabbed over, and cutaway from Bry's performance. With the immininent arrival of the remasters (thank god, as they are sorely needed - compare the remix of Let's Stick to the original, and the layers of crud that get lifted away is incredible), is there any REAL reason for me to hang onto my original EG/Polydor cds? I don't wanna dump them and then have them become valuable collectors items (I dumped my RCA Bowie's like that, and have regretted it ever since!) Is there a legit cd of the Manifesto Hammersmith show from the BBC? The list is always interesting. I'm glad to see that going OT isn't a criminal offense, like on some NGs/lists. Finally, hello to Sharon from Richmond, a mere 60 odd miles away from me here in BFE, VA! jon _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. An unknown Ferry touring schedule through the hill country, perhaps? Will Ferry come up to the Northern Midwest on the heels of that tour, perhaps to play a series of football stadiums, just before the season begins? Fellow hayseeds, dust off those nylon parkas and ski caps! As for myself, my new husband and I will be moving to Boston in September. Perhaps Ferry will play on the deck of the USS Constitution. Hey Alison, well, assuming that you're new, welcome. It sounds like we've been on the same types of lists, one of the best "rabid teenage girl" lists was perhaps the Pulp list, have you been there? > > I'm definitely interested in hearing more of this style of music, so > tips from you veterans > would be appreciated! I don't know what you like right now, but some of my favorites (and I think they're in the genre you're referring to) are (of course) Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Japan, early Ultravox, Scott Walker, David Bowie, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (but only from the period of say, "From Her to Eternity" to about "The Good Son,"), and anything Wim Wenders would put on a soundtrack. I also like garden-variety 80's new wave, such as New Order or ABC or Heaven 17 quite a bit. Seriously though, I think that ATGB is a pretty uninspired move even with BF's excellent record of whipping new life into familiar tunes, particularly in the absence of a single to promote. If BF really has all this material stored up, why not issue some of it? Does it share the uncommercial feel of Horoscope/Mamouna? Still, I hated the thought of Taxi before it was released, and it's turned into my favourite among his recent (this is a relative term) releases. The above is a common misconception .. cashing in on JL's murder blah blah. It is, of course, far from the truth. Roxy were due to play Rockplast and, pretty well sick of touring and banging out the same old numbers, they got to talking about which Lennon song they could do as a tribute, and make a pleasant change. The number went down so well that EG insisted on releasing it as a single. The first non-album single since Pyjamarama. The band weighed up the pros and cons and went ahead. I recently went to a party where everyone had to nominate one song as their all time favourite, and then we each took turns to play it.(Thinking Windswept could be a trifle inaccessible I opted for Both Ends Burning.) Then we voted on which was the best by some bizarre Euro proprtional representation system. The eventual winner was "Feel The Need" by Detriot Emeralds. For a laugh I played Ferry's version directly afterwards and my pals were amazed by how strong his version was. Gee, can I get any more specific? ;-) I love industrial and synth music, musicals (especially Kander & Ebb), Dinah Washington and her sort, classic rock, Bowie, 80s hard rock (Scorpions, etc.) early alternative, and, of course, Roxy. But that's just a small sample. I'll also admit to having a certain affection for goth rock like Type O Negative, but that's our little secret, 'k? What about the songs I heard made me want more? Don't know really. Some of them were covers, and as I just got the first Roxy album, it's interesting to hear the differences - mainly Ferry's very distinctive voice! "Street Life" is a greatest hits album, right? I usually don't like to buy those, at least not as a first. It feels like cheating somehow.... and since I'll probably end up buying the original albums anyway, why waste money when I can make a better mix of my own? Just out of curiosity, where were you a DJ? A radio station? And in what country? That must have been an interesting job. to Heather: Never been to the Pulp list, I'm afraid. Not my thing. ;-) It's cool that you mentioned Nick Cave and Wim Wenders! I haven't heard much of Cave's music, but I adored him in "Wings of Desire," which is, incidentally, my favorite movie of all time. I've been trying to get ahold of the soundtrack, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere. (That being your cue to say you have a copy, right?)
