The main thrust of my argument, and this was a reply to your piece, is that we shouldn't care about what the press will say. The reviews of Mamouna in the broadsheets were, if anything, more damning than the tabs. Fortysomething hacks who could understand the more upbeat early Roxy but could never work out the rest; who now think they're hip to like Oasis etc but don't see how derivative that stuff is and refuse to consider how experimental 90's Ferry is. Sad old Rockers who perceive music in the late 60s / early 70s mould : (Hotel wreckin', groupie bangin', guitar heroes etc) and are soooo happy that music has turned full circle. Yet Ferry's artschool, ironic take on Rock n Roll has always bewildered these guys. A classic example is Pete Clark in London's Evening Standard. He wrote a vitriolic article on Bryan's children's shoe ad (Start-rite ?), ruminating on what a cop-out this was for the most musically subversive man of his generation. I thought the ad was stylish and funny. And, of course, went out and snapped up a pair for my little girl ! ><< some Avalonions will not be satisfied until Andy duckwalks through > "Editions" again, the rest of us eagerly await the next creative era of the > Maestro. > >> > >Pardon me, I take it that broadside was aimed at myself and others of that >ilk, Herr Stockman? Good example, Han, of Bryan in fine form, a subtle (definitive?) re-invention of a classic song. [And his first chart flop, but we'll let that pass.] But, Help Me Make It Through The Night? Midnight Hour? Eight Miles High? All Tomorrows Parties? I wonder why he bothered, they're all without soul. I hope this album is good, for all our sakes. But I have to say that I prefer Bryan as a writer rather than an interpreter. I'd also prefer to hear covers alongside his own compositions rather than both standing separate, as on The Bride Stripped Bare, an extraordinarily charged record. However, it's up to him! Perhaps he likes the idea of having the two careers, interpreter and (re)creator, a parallel of the earlier Roxy/Ferry period. Actually, more than I am comfortable with. Unlike Colleen and Gene, I look forward to hearing Ferry's version of "September Song" (sorry, it's a personality flaw), even w/Lindsay Buckingham's (speaking of someone who is overdue) and Lou Reed's (speaking of someone who..., well the less said the better) 2 versions in recent years. (Still, if Ferry wants to cover Kurt Weill there aren't there a lot more adventurous choices!?!). Like T Fagan, my primary contact with "Where or When" is Dave Edmunds. (That really was a great version, wasn't it?) The song list DOES look incredibly conservative to me. In the past, Ferry has done excellent things w/stuff like "These Foolish Things" (a personal favorite) and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", but a whole album of the stuff...? I DO have to say that after "2HB", "These Foolish Things" and "Tokyo Joe", it's nice to see him finally get to the heart of his Humphrey Bogart obsession and nail "As Time Goes By" once and for all. (Although I haven't heard it yet, I can't imagine him dropping the ball on a song that is probably as important to him as this!) It's a natural for the lead off track. I haven't bought into the whole retro/crooner thing as much as some. To me, Ferry is still a "rock" singer/artist of uncommon abilities ("Country Life" will always be one of my all-time great musical experiences, and that is definitely a "rock" album), but this entire song list smacks of "career move". I hope to hell I'm totally off base here, but right now I would be surprised if the musical approach isn't pretty straightforward, too. While "Taxi" may not be Ferry's best and most successful collection of covers, it's the one I turn to the most because it is the one where he was the most musically adventurous, I felt. So, I guess my (fairly obscured) point is that this kind of retro material works better (for me, anyway) a song or 2 at a time. Still, BF has carved a significant career for himself as an interpreter. So I hold out hope that that is what he is doing here. Interpreting (with a vengance) and not re-hashing. and I can't help but think that this album >is a retreat. >Colleen (who firmly holds that you can be a fan without also having to be >a boot-licker) Thanks (a lot) for that. Mostly interviews with a bored Bry interspersed with clips of readily available promos. Some nuggets emerged from the murky water. It became clear that I could easily fill a 3 hour tape with fantastic live performances, amusing soundbites and other Roxy related TV curios. I then borrowed studio time from a London TV "Lab" to put the assorted pieces together on DVCAM. It took time. Twice I travelled to their South London studios to find the engineers helping me had gone home early. ...Last Monday night I put down the final hours worth of material. I now have to tweak it a little, package it in the acknowledged style and put it all on videos that can be played in the box in the corner of your front room. In other words I'm very close to completing this labour of love. I hope it proves popular with this most critical of audiences. A few points : The recent debate on the list about the merits of the Live Aid performance threw up the fact that US based Avalonions may not have seen the flawed yet amazing performance of "Sensation" and "Boys and Girls." V.cool. 125-144 The legendary episode of French soap Hotel Bouque with BF playing himself on tour with le group Roxy Musique in Paris tour hotel. Bry gets off with the patron's wife and reflects upon how he used to take himself too seriously. "And now ?" "Others take me too seriously." !!! Makes a great ending. To be added : 5 minutes from that bloody Richard Hamilton documentary. Both tapes I have of it have terrible quality. That's why I put out a message today to try and get another copy. It contains a lot of material that explains where so much of Roxy and Bryan come from. (What an inelegant sentence !) It also has great stills of adolescent BF, his car, his student digs, and so forth. I'd also like to add some more live footage from Dortmund if there's space. A lot of concert footage ended up on the cutting room floor, usually because the visual quality was so poor. I always asked, "Will this add to the High Road and New Town videos ?" and usually the answer was no. One gig in Tokyo with Spedding, promoting In Your Mind, would have filled a video hole in that largely unfilmed part of the career but it was virtually unintelligible visually. When all is ready I'll alert the list and people can mail me directly to arrange your copy.
