Walker is amazing. He's just one guy from Ohio, but he influenced so many great artists - Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave (heavily), Jarvis Cocker, the list goes on. An amazing Walker epiphany I had the other day - I realized that Gavin Friday covers Walker's "Next" on his solo album "Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves." That was kind of neat. My fiance says that Walker sounds like a contestant on a European music competition called "Melodie Grand Prix." I wouldn't know because I've never seen the program, but Walker is definitely one of my favorites! Well, I'm a dishonest Avalonian I guess because I can't bring myself to pay money for this CD. The last two performances of Jimmy Scott's that I've seen (on the PBS "Sessions at 54th Street" series performing a bunch of songs from this album and in the audience at a live performance at the Kennedy Center a few months ago with the Billy Taylor Trio performing some of his signature numbers) were like night and day. I'd instead urge folks to do their best to track down his older stuff since it's light years ahead of his latest release. Just my opinion, blah blah blah, and really, what do I know? Which, of course, means that if you like the stuff he has out now, you are in for an even greater treat. Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was, for me, the kind of hectoring anthem that had me switching stations until I stumbled across Little Jimmy's rendition the other day. Epiphany. It's like a conversation with a fellow mourner at the funeral of a love affair. You could shell out for that song alone.... Without wishing to get too pretentious ( I know this has never been posed a problem thus far ) I can only say that his voice has a frailty, a poignancy, that I've never occasioned upon before. But for the record I must state 'Holding Back the Years' is one of the ALL-TIME WORST recordings by Jimmy Scott. He was pushed into recording this twaddle in a misguided attempt to make him sound 'Now,' and--obvious to any long-time Jimmy fan--he stumbles through the pathetic results. Those who care enough to investigate Jimmy Scott should skip this digital nightmare and find: - --'Very Truly Yours,' Savoy Jazz SV-0239. Stark 1955 sessions which include the heart-stopping 'When Did You Leave Heaven?' and 'Don't Cry Baby' (which Jimmy MASSACRES on the new CD). Charles Mingus stormed out of the sessions because he claimed he couldn't follow Jimmy's time. - --'Lost and Found' Rhino R2 71059. Atlantic sessions from 1969 and 1972. Occasionally uneven song selection--'For Once In My Life'!--but includes Jimmy's masterpiece, 'Day by Day.' - --or attempt finding 'Falling in Love Is Wonderful,' Jimmy's 1962 Tangerine lp co-produced and featuring Ray Charles (unbelievably rare--the only copy Jimmy owns is coverless and scratched to oblivion). Also for the record, a few years back--in my own Nowsville misfire--Yours Truly personally handed Mr Ferry a tape of Mr Scott during a half-hearted bid to interest Ferry in producing Jimmy Scott. No response. No surprise. VAPOR PS. Well, I see that Vapor has listed the must haves (although in typical Vapor fashion, they are indeed a challenge since they might be, oh, a little difficult to track down). There is also a documentary about Mr. Scott which aired recently here in the US on the cable channel Bravo and which might be available for rental somewhere, but I don't know the details (like if it's even been released to that market). It's ultimately unsatisfying because you get the sense from the hints of good stuff in the interviews that the editor managed to somehow leave in only the most banal stuff, but it's definitely worth watching if you are interested in Mr. Scott. And again, Mr. Scott's voice is a pale reflection of what it once was, so the earlier recordings are well worth the hunt. Not exactly household names you're spouting there, you know. Except the Shangri-Las, and as far as the general record buying public is concerned, they only recorded the one single. But, hey, as long as Gladys Knight made it on the list, this chick's a happy camper. What's more, some poor misguided saps like me would put Hole way above Sarah. :-) I reject the whole notion of separating women into their own list, which runs perilously close to ghettoizing them. I remember Terrence Trent D'Arby (whose work after his hit debut has been criminally neglected and underrated IMO) complaining that he kept getting compared only to Sam Cooke and Prince and Michael Jackson, when his music had just as much in common with Mick Jagger or Bowie, but critics could only think "black artist." Or my friend Kate Campbell, who critics always liken to Nanci Griffith even though she's way more like John Prine. 'Reatha and Patti Smith and PJ Harvey don't need a "women in rock" list to help 'em out -- they're fully capable of making *the* rock list on their own merits. later, girly-man/Beatles-fan Miles ====================================================== Miles Goosens R. Hi everyone - I just thought I'd send a quick note introducing myself. I'm Alison, I'm 16, and I live in Seattle.... and that's all there is to say about me, really. I don't know if I'll be staying on this list long, but the web sites I've been to haven't been updated since 1997 - not really the best source of recent information. As a warning, I know NOTHING about Roxy Music or Brian Ferry. I literally first heard of them two days ago. I bought the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack (does that make me uncool? oh well) and liked the Ferry and Eno songs on that, even though I think only one was an original version. So I poked around a bit on the net, discovered the existence of Roxy Music, bought "Siren" and was completely blown away by it. So here I am. Be gentle, I'm a beginner. :P - -Alison - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 01:10:57 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [AVALON] I'm sorry to have missed it!
