It concerns our CD/Tape/Video trees and everyone`s input will make future CD/Tape/Video trees as painless as possible but above all, I hope it will answer questions and be informative. Although past CD trees have gone smoothly, from time to time circumstances arise which caused conflict regarding material some wish to use as trade material or potential profit. While I have no problem with people profiting from material they have, it`s easy to see how a conflict of interest can occur when a CD tree comes up for consideration. These are things that need to be discussed. Also, "when should this guideline be posted?" is also a consideration. (Weekly to the list? Posted "off list" to newbies who introduce themselves? When a tree comes up?....etc.) I hope everyone takes the time to read, nit-pick, add to or delete what they deem necessary and fair, then submit it. This will be set as the final word. I started work on this guideline months ago after a misunderstanding concerning the Ferry Rarities CD of last February (ever wonder what happened to that?) came up. I wrote, re-wrote and re-re-wrote this thing so many times, I finally hit a wall and sent copies to others (dumped in their laps, actually) for their input. I`m sure they also mulled over it, but nothing really came of it. So now, with the up coming CD tree on a roll, I`m posting it as it stands and it`s open to debate. A little background on our CD trees in case you wern`t there. A little over a year ago(?...probably longer), there was a lot of excitement on the list about the "Why Do You Think I`m A Funky Chick" ('76 Stockholm show) bootleg on CD. This show is really the only known "complete" stereo Roxy concert in existence before they reformed in '79. Needless to say, it`s a favorite among everyone into live Roxy shows. However, this CD turned out to be one of the poorest quality bootlegs ever made. It sounds like it was taken directly from an LP that had been used as a Frisbee on a gravel parking lot. TOTAL GARBAGE! When the prices of CD-Rs (recordable CD units) dropped within reach of the mainstream public along with professional quality music restoration/mastering software and I dove right in. So, armed with a CD-R and resto. software (Dart Pro32) plus a very good quality copy of the '76 Stockholm show on vinyl (and a lot of time on my hands), I cleaned it up, recorded a master to a CD-R and offered copies to everyone on the list free of charge. It was a big hit. I made master copies that were sent out to about 5 other CD-R owners on the list and I believe we each ended up making close to a dozen copies each. Other bootlegs soon followed. My hope was that "no one" on this list would ever again waste their money on these sorry quality, over priced bootlegs and at the same time, let everyone experience these wonderful recordings for nothing more than the cost of the media and postage. Again, I have nothing against someone profiting from material they hold, but I believe our free to all "CD/Video Trees" (and Jimmy Vapor) is one of the things that make the Avalon list special and different, something not found on other music related mail list. Gene and now......... - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------------------- THE CD / TAPE / VIDEO TREE GUIDELINE "This will prove a brave kingdom to me, Where I shall have my music for nothing." Shakespeare, "The Tempest" INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the Avalon list. This mail list is devoted to Roxy Music and related artist and bands. If you give this list a chance, I think you`ll find that it has a lot to offer in the way of Roxy Music news and items of interest. There are many music related mail lists available on the Internet but I`m sure you`ll find the Avalon list is special and different. One thing that we offer that is of interest to many people is a selection of rare and unique material not available to the mainstream public (read into this bootlegs) by way of out "CD/Video trees." The Roxy Music bootlegs distributed via our "trees" are aimed at people who love listening to Roxy, want to hear interesting, good Roxy, and groan at the hint of another damn no-end-in-sight CD box set that seem to re-hash the same old studio cuts, "b- sides", and "special mixes" over and over. Bootlegs offer a unique glimpse of the band on their natural turf....the stage. Please keep in mind that no one on the Avalon list is responsible for the existence of bootlegs, we merely have access to them, enjoy them and wish to spread the music. I`ve met many people on this mail list who were stunned by the brilliance of a certain song done live on a bootleg and reevaluated their whole attitude to them. But first and foremost, the Avalon list is NOT just about bootlegs and anyone focusing only on this subject is missing out on some often stimulating, sometimes hilarious and most interesting people. WHAT A "TREE" IS AND HOW IT`S DONE: A "tree", as in Tape/Video/Cd "tree", is unique material relating to Roxy Music which is compiled by a person(s) and offered to the list. If enough interest is generated, then list members capable of producing CD-R and tape copies (known as "Master Holders") will contact the person with the material. A number of "masters" are made and sent to a number of "Master Holders". When the "Master Holders" are ready, they will announce it to the list and anyone interested in a copy would simply post a request to the list copies will go out to those interested. Hence, "a tree." Typically, anyone wanting a copy will need to send the appropriate number of blank media (video tapes, audio cassette tapes or CD-R) and a stamped, addressed bubble-lined shipping package. The "Master Holder" will make your copy and send it to you. That`s it. THE RULES: 1) A CD/Tape/Video (T/V/CD) Tree can only be initiated by a person(s) possessing enough Roxy related material to put (at least) a tape together. 2) NO ONE CAN VOLUNTEER ANOTHER`S MATERIAL. 3) In no way is a profit made by anyone initiating or taking part as a master holder. They will always be done for the cost of the media and shipping only. WHAT`S AVAILABLE: Past trees have included: Brian Ferry-Wolfhampton(?) '95 with Robin Trower The Stockholm show of 01.27.76, 2CDs, Excellent Stereo '75 New York/London show, 1CD Excellent Stereo Various BBC broadcast '72-'74, 1CD Excellent Stereo '74 Boston show, 2CD Very good+ mono audience recording Editions Of Roxy- A compilation of 15 Roxy songs covered by other bands. WHAT`S IN THE FUTURE: A Video collection. Another CD of live recordings from the '80`s and a recent Ferry show. - ----------------------------------------------END--------------------------- - ----------------------------------- - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 19:10:17 PDT From: "shane beck" Subject: [AVALON] Top 5 artists For what it's worth here's my top 5 artists. 1. So if there are any Avalonians from those states, you are honorary MAA, (Midwestern Avalonians of America). Maybe we can all hold a big baptism ceremony in the traditional midwestern style, speaking in tongues and submerging ourselves entirely underwater, preferably with a tornado in the background. Bryan looks fabulous in a long red coat - I think - but the performances are strictly showtime. (Notwithstanding a pumping big band Lets Stick Together) When I heard about Hey Jude I hoped he would give it the old world-weary reflective spin but the reality is more prosaic - a standard ensemble anthem with lots of happy clappy local "stars." At least Bryan looked happy and comfortable centre stage as opposed to his nervous boy-in-the-corner performance last week. With regard to the Compilation I remain at the mercy of my friends at London Weekend Television to grant me editing space. My main man has been on holiday and returns tomorrow. And don't forget "You won't see me" and "She's leaving home" ... and "Hey Jude" at Heineken. Bryan's love of Lennon / McCartney songs is well documented. There shouldn't even be a debate. I think their melodies lend themselves admirably to Bryan's more soulful reworking. I heard "Michelle" (oddly enough on the pier at Lake Geneva) last Thursday and I got to thinking how beautifully he could cover that, with Hubbard's plaintive licks,.... Get real John. The Beatles were derivative (of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry et al) but were also hugely influential and meaningful. For you BF/RM will always be Ladytron and Dreamhome but for the rest of us there is a broader canvas. Martin PS Zappa has always seemed like a novelty act to me. First time I hear an album I love the humour and innovation. After 3 plays, however, I've got the joke and never play it again.
