I've asked John for slave to love of that Heineken cd (that's the only recording of him on that cd and it's not very strong in my opinion) . If he sent it I can add that one, or I try to lent it from the musiclibrary. Anyone have a good quality recording of his performances in the David Letterman and/or Jay Leno shows on cd, tape or videotape(pal)? If I can lent them I can add those items too. The list is, of course, pathetic, as all such lists are - but nevertheless Louis Armstrong - objectively the most influential musical artist of the century - and Duke Ellington and Miles Davis and Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf ( was she on the list?) and Ray Charles ( was he?) - all these people are definitely 'better' than Ferry if talent and musicianship count for any damn thing in this benighted culture of ours. And to call the Beatles 'tripe' is going it a bit too, and I don't even have any particular affection for their work. But I have just been thinking while weeding a flower bed, that we live in the worst period of 'popular culture' since it can be said to have begun - ( music hall and Vaudeville being its roots I suppose, but expanding with the coming of film and records). There is no question in my mind that the mid-century pop culture, of Casablanca and Sinatra and Agatha Christie and Elvis and Hank Williams, or the three-quarter century , of the Beatles and early Robert Altman and Mary Tyler Moore and Roxy Music, were richer by far than the current 'mass' corporate culture of Star Wars and Star Trek and the Backstreet boys and (bless him) Will Smith and -sorry - saddoes on the internet leading cyber lives and having cyber sex and not really living at all ( which doesn't apply to any of you, but as the novelist Graham Swift observed, the internet is stuffed full of people you wouldn't want to meet). It's all pretty hopeless, really. When growing up on the East Coast, Ohio and the like sure seemed like the Midwest to me... after all, it was west of my living room sofa. Once I pointed my car towards the Left Coast, however, the perspective changed. Can any place which is reached prior to sundown in a day's drive from a mid-Atlantic state really be considered Midwest? Can a place which sets its clocks by EST/EDT be considered Midwest? Is the only "Mideast" the one on the far side of the pond where it's now in the wee hours of the morning? Inquiring minds don't really want to know, yet pose the questions anyway. Or at least indulge in off-topic rambling. -wfs - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 12:26:12 -0400 From: jspellman Subject: Re: [AVALON] Q Magazine Top 100 Readers Poll JFROXY@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 07/07/99 11:38:19 GMT Daylight Time, will@execpc.com > writes: > > << Lots of people above BF that didn't belong there. > >> > > Yeah like 98 of them, apart from the wonderful Frank Zappa, and especially > those two sacred cows, Lennon and McCartney, when are people gonna see these > two for what they really were, overrated tripe. > JF.
