To save the mariage I left after Bryan's act and am mortified to have missed the crack in the bar afterwards. And I could have found a drinking den or two for thirsty Avalonions. As The World Turns goes straight in to my Top 20 ! Although I think he borrows one refrain from "Ferry Cross The Mersey" ! "..At the end of the day etc.." v "At the end of the storm." Funnily enough I bought the This Is Tomorrow single at the time, and must have lost it. I faintly recall this song but can't understand why it failed to register as a strong number back then. It would have been a wonderful Track 3 on Bride, and with, say, a Rhett Davies production could have been A Song For Europe for the 80s. God knows how the folowing were considered not good enough for an album Always Unknowing As the World Turns Broken Wings (actually all of that Windswept EP) Shes Leaving Home Lover Lonesome Tonight Now. About these covers. I'm in. Please mail details... Yours, with the Northern lights of Beaully still flashing in my mind, Martin - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 11:43:02 +0100 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: [AVALON] RFH*1 : The Bar Loneliness is a crowded room Full of open hearts turned to stone All together all alone .... Where does one begin ? Firstly, a great Avalonion turn-out : Bahi, Robert, Andy, Gareth, John, Richard and yours truly duly met up at the aforesaid venue in what can only be described as tropical conditions. Front of house was full of fevered anticipation as Avalonions swapped tour stories. We weren't to know that backstage a tall, floppy haired genius was certainly feeling the heat as he pleaded with his management to stage a twelfth hour pull-out. I'd love to report that Gareth was sporting a GI outfit, Richard, full Gaucho couture complete with bull-whip and Robert was resplendent in White Tux and Blahnik loafers ; however UK Avalonions were anxious not to showboat in front of the honest London audience searching for a night of traditional American folk music. The dress code of smart casual, and not-so-smart casual (no names) was universally adhered too. My cream cotton suit was a distant reference to the back cover of the "In Your Mind" tour brochure, a reference so remote that even I had forgotten about it. Are friends electric ? Moving out of cyberspace, through a looking glass, and into 3-D reality is a curious experience. As Joanne, my dear wife celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary, and I walked through the door and into the bar I felt like an explorer about to find the inhabitants of the Lost World of Avalonia. Within seconds we encountered the fan of fans, Mr John O'Brien, as promised in his trademark Mamouna bottle-top "t" shirt and crazy highland brogue. Indeed it was surprisingly easy to find our electronic pals. Andy Cooper was there, wired for sound, nervously wondering if he shouldn't record the soundcheck. (Yes, he was ribbed about that repeat message torture. And he admitted that he was the one and only Andy Cooper contrary to his curveball denials.) Up popped Richard in Mamouna "Bryan face" t shirt. The beers were flowing like wine. Robert Fedder sidles up, cool, intense, apprehensive. Another fab guy with a great memory for Ferry trivia. Hey, who's that looking round the corner. There's Juliet Mann, the old boy's long-suffering P.A., not a sloaney rock babe but an elegant middle-aged lady with hoop ear-rings. Hi you must be Bahi ? No I'm Murali (spelling ?) his brother, Bahi's at the bar-he. And here he is. Terrifyingly clever, with Bollywood good looks to boot. I suspect that Murali is a lurker. Where's Gareth ? Up above our group, leaning on a railing overlooking the bar, the grinning boy-child peers down at the throng. Where've I seen that attitude before..?... the cover of the Price Of Love EP perhaps. Come on down you buffoon. He descends. I conduct the round of intros. When he gets to Joanne she coos sultrily, "I'm Kicki." Much laughter. Poor Joanne. I'd promised her that Avalonians would undoubtedly bring their girlfriends / wives / partners / catamites, and she'd get a chance to discuss non-Roxy matters. If such matters exist. When she walked in the room she was met by an unremitting blast of Avalon testosterone. Oops. Robert kindly enquired "Are you tolerant ?" This was not, of course, a reference to her liberal political persuasion but a query about how she handled a Ferry-obsessed spouse. Presumably a breakfast table topic in the Fedder household. (Robert once told me that his wife flipped when all 10 in-car CDs were RM/BF.) She replied that whilst saturation point had often been reached on the music front, the Ferry visual experience never failed to induce a perfumed sigh. Our hearts were raised when we saw Bryan's name on the programme at the head of a list of artists including Beth Orton, Jarvis Cocker and Nick Cave. He was the main thing, the chosen one, as we all felt was his right. ...more Martino nonsense later... - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 15:27:13 +0200 From: Kicki Gustafsson Subject: Re: [AVALON] RFH*1 : The Bar > I conduct the round of >intros. Mmmn. Cruel but fair. Sometimes the fingers trip across the keys without engaging the brain. Let's start again. "At the end of the day, as the world turns," is, to my ears, remiscent of a phrase from the Rodgers and Hammerstien musical song "You'll never walk alone," a song immortalized by Liverpool beat combo Gerry and the Pacemakers and every football hooligan around the globe. How ironic that Bryan's delightful lyric from this song "Though we´re far apart on this old carousel The ups and downs we share" contains the title of the musical from which he might or might not have borrowed the refrain. I'm sure a good lawyer would have a lot of fun with that. I can add The Right stuff and Kiss and tell from the SNL performance and Will you love me from Later with Jools. Both in stereo and excellent soundquality. I also want to make a nice cover for the cd. We must work out how to to this. I don't know if John has a computer cd-writer or an writer as part of his stereoinstalation. The advance of the first is that we can bring the volume of the different performances on the same level. I don't know how bad the sound is of the RFH-songs, but with 'sound editor' I can improve the quality. Btw I also have the four liveaid songs in mono. The quality is o.k.
