The other problem was a 'nutter' sitting right in front of me who insisted on whooping every time the applause started (there is always one - and he always sits near me!!). Anyway - when I get back from Italy - where I am going at 5pm (it's now 3pm) for work - I will do my best to distribute MD and CD copies esp. to those who can act as onward distributors. My first instinct when coming upon such polls is to flee......quickly. But I was weak and gave in even though I know full well that such polls are gathered by galactic idiots whose only goal in life is to hunt me down and insult my intelligence. So, as soon as I saw Kurt Cobain in the top five I knew my eyes would roll into the back of my head and stay there until I closed my browser. Also, the mere mention of Diana Ross in any context usually drives me into a rabid hate frenzy, but to list her and pass up, say, Link Wray, Roy Orbison or even Jeff Lynne to name a few more deserving, is a John Waters kind of sick. Gene ...and who in hell is Youssou I agree the Q list is most bizarre. Just how in the world did Kurt Corbain ( I liked him but no that much) rank above Duke Ellington, Chuck Berry( unlisted Hmmm....., JIMI HENDRIX ( ????????), Mick and Keith, Stravinsky ( whaaaa....) and yes Ms. Ross (sorry the Supremes were very influential) is anybody's guess. I would like to know the age range of the readership of Q. I think that will, to me at least, provide a clue as to why some artist are higher than others. I guess we should be grateful in some sort of way. Bryan was listed at No. 99 !!!! As far as Youssou, he has quite a following and is a talented singer. I became aware of him via Peter Gabriel. As a quick reference, if you listen to Shaking the Tree by Gabriel, his voice is very prominent on that recording. Oh yeah, thanks to Bahi for giving us an update of Bryan's performance. It was excellent to meet everyone - I have a terrible memory but as everyone introduced themselves it was like meeting an old friend. I didn't really know what to expect meeting John, Bahi (and brother), Gareth, Andy, Robert and Martin - but it all went very well - very friendly, amiable and good conversation. Just a pity that the concert finished so late and we couldn't find a convenient bar instead of McDonalds to 1.30 a.m.!! A good deal of the concert was entertaining enough - a mix of folk, jazz and short films. Not all the music was my cup of tea either - I like some jazz and some classic vocalists - but don't care too much for over - indulgence which was certainly what we got in spades during the final number!! Aside from Bryan, I would cite Jimmy Scott, Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker as the hi-lights. John recommends Jimmy Scott's latest CD which is an album of classic pop songs including "Slave To Love" and on the strength of the evening's performance (and John's recommendation!) I will buy it shortly. Jarvis Cocker's song was built around a conversation between a man and a cockroach - very funny and imaginatively performed. The interval saw list members meet up again in the bar for an interesting chat during which we all met Jim Lawn who gave us some upto date info, some of which has already been posted e.g. album due 20 September; no singles from the album; tour dates had, as of that day, been finalised and would be announced soon - Bryan will be performing with a jazz band; the box set of Bryan's work had been put back to next year but CD4 will include some previously unreleased material (of which there are heaps - was it 50 - odd or 70 - odd tracks he said were basically finished but unreleased?) ; a Roxy reunion will not happen (although I don't recall Jim citing any one band member as the cause of this) etc. It was good to hear some fairly definitive news and to have some 'official' perspective on some things that have engaged us in discussion recently e.g. Bryan was never due to play dates in The Hague / Montreux - organisers used his name without permission (possibly on the back of info they had that Bryan was working on a jazz based album), Bryan hasn't been hawking his 30s / 40s album around record companies - he has a deal with Virgin to release this etc. Jim was pretty upbeat about all of this and, for my part, I'm pretty certain things will materialise within the timescales mentioned. clearly the hi-light of the second half (of the whole show) was Bryan's performance. He was basically topping the bill but came on third from the end to sing his two songs, the names of which I didn't catch either. He looked good - hair a little shorter than we have been accustomed to of late and dressed in a black suit with white shirt. he was seated playing the piano throughout the performance. The piano was at the front left hand side of the stage facing the right hand rear of the stage so at best the audience could see him in profile and at worst he had his back to some parts of the auditorium (fortunately this didn't include me!) - almost certainly not deliberate rather one of the hazards of using equipment set up on stage for the use of a succession of different artists. The singing seemed to come very easily (I'm sure it didn't) because it was that very natural voice heard from time to time - indeed I was reminded of Bryan's performance of "Carrickfergus" on the last tour and the music was excellent in particular the banjo - Bryan Ferry meets "Deliverance"!! Jim Lawn said after the show that they would consider the prospects of releasing it at some future date. With only two songs the performance was over all too quickly and it seemed Bryan couldn't get off the stage quick enough - I think he was probably very nervous about this gig but, from where I was sitting, it was an excellent performance and very well received by the audience. Certainly it was a much more relaxed and comfortable Bryan that appeared at the end for a final curtain call, drawing a loud cheer. This was probably nothing like anything ANY of us was expecting. I'm certain the songs will be well known by a large part of the assembled audience but not to any of the Avalonians present. I never thought I'd see Bryan perform work of this sort but I felt privileged to have seen it, just in case we never see the like again. Hats off to the list for bringing the gig to our attention - since Bryan wasn't billed until he appeared in the programme I doubt I would ever have found out about it if it were not for you - especially Martin - thanks for your efforts to get this on the list and verify Bryan's presence through I.E. After the show we spoke with Jim Lawn again who was happy for us to accompany him for a drink but he was going to Olympia and this wasn't really feasible. Some of the Ferry offspring were also pointed out to us and we were introduced to Simon Puxley. We adjourned to McDonalds (appropriately on The Strand) for a long chat. I think I have a pretty good knowledge of Bryan and a good collection but, like everyone else, sat somewhat entranced by John who must have a den the size of my house to accommodate his collection and memorabilia. It was good to talk to a group of people with such a passionate interest in Bryan and Roxy - it can sometimes feel like a lonely existence - something Gareth knows because, at 21, he can't get any of his friends into his favourite music - keep trying Gareth! This was Gareth's first glimpse of Bryan live - hope to see you on the proposed tour again Gareth when you'll presumably be seeing something in keeping with that which you'll have seen many times on video, albeit with a jazz band rather than a conventional group. I look forward to hearing more about the concert and to reactions. I'm sure there's plenty I've left out which others can pick up on. An excellent night out with a great group of Avalonians and something which sustained me through my morning and afternoon of cancelled, late and crowded, hot trains - and that was just London to Liverpool, paling compared to the journeys some others on the list were making. I look forward to doing it all again soon. But since i've been recently weeding out the flotsam and detritus clogging my inbox, i find myself more current than I have been in a long time, so here goes; First off, I must say that CDNOW has been quite dodgy when it comes to imports for quite some time, perhaps always. I ordered imports from them a few times with decidedly mixed results. They were always fairly reliable with domestic US stuff, but half the time they listed imports in stock that they couldn't provide. I have also been searching for "Psalm" (and a couple other Roxy related import items) and found 2 other places that listed it. (I haven't ordered yet so I guess I should get busy.) AB-CD (www.ab-cd.com) and Amazon.com both list it. I have ordered from both of them a time or 2 and can't complain. I would probably use AB-CD more but they tend to insist on using UPS if the order is of any size at all and I use a P.O. box as opposed to a street address. I used Amazon.com to order a cd for the first time last week (Jon Hassell's Fascinoma", excellent BTW) and was happy with the service. My only problem with them is that, since I am in Washington State and they are also, I am subjected to local taxes. (One of the selling points for me regarding online shopping, outside of frequently better availability of cd's, is saving the sales tax on big orders by shopping out of state.) Still, I may find myself using them more, since i am so far happy with their service, they seem to have a pretty healthy catlog of music available, and they will ship to my P.O. box. (Amazon.com has the better price, BTW.) As for CDNOW (tirade follows, proceed at your own risk); Ever since CDNOW merged with Music Boulevard, they have gone straight down the crapper in a big way (all this is just my opinion, of course). I was probably one of their earlier customers (I distinctly remember my wife saying something to the effect of "Now we're in trouble" when she found I had discovered CD shopping on the internet a few years back). I was very happy with their service until the merger. Even when they screwed up an order of some Jeff Buckley singles a couple of years ago, they dealt with it swiftly and everything worked out to my satisfaction. Since the merger, their customer service has deteriorated incredibly. I had a problem right after the switch over, with my account. I emailed AND called them. The problem remained. I emailed again. No response. 3 weeks later, I sent an email that was substantially more strident in tone. I got a preliminary response about 5 days later asking for more info regarding the problem. (Which only reinforces the unfortunate maxim of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". I greatly dislike intentional rudeness in myself or others, and am greatly saddened when it sometimes seems to be the only way to get a response.) I replied immediately and got back a form letter email acknowledging the receipt my response and then nothing. That was over 2 weeks ago. I have since changed my Credit Card # that they had on file, and unless they give me a really good reason, will do my best to dissuade any and all from shopping there. There are plenty of other online music stores, and I suspect there are some that are willing to do that extra bit to make sure problems are dealt with in an expedient manner. I'm not the type of person who automatically goes on a rampage when a mistake is made. People make mistakes. It's the way mistakes are dealt with after they are made that tends to influnce my opinion of the "shopping experience". Right now my confidence in CDNOW is about nil. Sorry for the excessive length. I guess I needed to get that rant out of my systyem. I will crawl back under my rock now. Bye. Be Well; Erik S (who lives in Spokane Wa. where we are having record setting COOL temperatures for this time of year.) NP: PIL-"Plastic Box" P.S.
