I guess some reviews will begin to appear soon but if others feel like I do - really tired after an arduous journey home (courtesy of lightning knocking out some rail signals and with them lots of train services) - they will have to wait until tomorrow. I think John had one of the longest trips to make by rail - are you home yet?? A very unusual concert and performances from Bryan that will undoubtedly be discussed at some length in the next few days. Jim Lawn was on hand to give some useful pieces of information. One of particular interest is that the album "As Time Goes By" will be released by Virgin (yes, Virgin!) on 20 September. There are however no plans for any singles!! His tide seems to be going out, but even still, not to even make the top 100 is a remarkable fall from grace. Elton John - Once again proving that Elton is much more highly thought of in the US than in places like his native land, where truth be told he's seen more and more as a bad joke in bad clothes. Spice Girls - I don't think they deserve to be there, but given the high showings of other "hot right now" current artists who probably will be forgotten about in ten years time, it's another sign that the Spiceys are slipping. Cher - Given her recent triumphant comeback and longevity, she might have been expected to register here. Phil Collins - Never likely to trouble the upper echelons, but total disappearance is another signal of how his status has slid. Abba - Recent revival not quite enough to get them some respect. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 18:52:05 EDT From: JObinv01@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] RFH I checked my e-mail as soon as I got home (24 Hours after the show) expecting a gloriously written posting from Martin with his expert words of wisdom on the event. Summary: Bryan played 2 folk songs and has 2 completed albums awaiting release. If you're still interested, keep reading. First, an apology for the earlier curt and unpunctuated upper case dispatches. They were sent, as you probably gathered, from a mobile phone in the Royal Festival Hall, while we few Avalonians present - spending a brief moment together in The Real World - pondered the likelihood of a last minute cancellation by Mr Ferry, the contents of some excellent compilations put together and handed out by John O'Brien, and some frustrating insights into Bryan's clutch of dilemmas provided by an unexpected and unavalonian source. It would appear that, as we had guessed, Bryan has two complete albums awaiting release - one of 30s & 40s songs and the other of his own work. The latter has long been complete - hasn't been touched for some time, says The Source. And Bryan seems to be resisting pressure to reform Roxy Music. Others caught more of this bizarre briefing than I did, so expect to hear more. Bryan played two folk songs, one of which may have had the name Thomas Hardy in its title. Song titles weren't listed on the programme so perhaps definitive information will need to come from I.E. Management but, in tune with some of the other folk songs and ballads we heard that night, the first told a chilling story. An earlier artist introduced her performance by explaining dryly that "this is one of those ballads where someone gets killed" and Bryan's first song that night featured a suicide. (A Nick Cave evening, for sure.) I loved this performance: Bryan was backed by musicians that included a banjo player and an electric guitarist. Slightly surreal, but it worked: the inclusion (and style) of the guitar work was, I thought, outstanding and the banjo player seemed to be on some kind of Lamonte Young trip. Bryan's singing was high, warbly, and reminiscent of early Ladytron and 2HB performances. Very cool, in particular the way that guitar work slotted in. I'd love to hear them both again. Bryan was joined on vocals for the second song by Sid Straw, who had played her own set earlier. I was hoping for an appearance on b/vs by Jimmy Scott (who did provide this service for at least one other act) but it didn't happen. It seems that Bryan Ferry is doing what he wants to do. For now, it seems, that means being experimental and quirky - a working musician again. I hope he does get around to some of those jazz performances we were expecting at Montreux. Other highlights for me: the excellent Beth Orton (whose unofficial concert earlier in the week I'd been lucky enough to attend), an amazing performance from the Jimmy Scott Trio, Nick Cave's own set, and Jarvis Cocker's stuff - very amusing. Mary Margaret O'Hara was as only she can be - - this was the first time I'd seen her live. Crazy but great. Mingus junior made an appearance and went down well but Bryan, Nick Cave, Jimmy Scott (who was really special) and Jarvis Cocker drew the loudest cheers. Quite a few people seemed there to see Ferry, judging by the hasty exit of a considerable part of the audience after Bryan's performance. After a slightly puzzling extended jazz band set to finish, the evening's performers came on to take their bows and Bryan once again drew loud cheers and shouts from what remained of the audience. It was a privilege and an honour to meet with other Avalonians (and to catch a glimpse of the legendary Rex Balfour, aka Simon Puxley). Present when my brother and I turned up were: Andy Cooper, Robert Fedder, Mr & Mrs Martin Stockman, Richard from Liverpool, Gareth McGinley, and John O'Brien. This is the first time I've met face to face with people that I'd first encountered online. Gareth mentioned that it was (except for the lack of squabbling) like a reunion of some sort and it's true that it did feel that way, especially after the concert. John O'Brien: special thanks for the CD and for being a total obsessive. You make the rest of us seem like newcomers but we can rest assured that if there's a version of something, somewhere, you almost definitely have it. To those who were there: thanks for the laughs, the news, the insights, and the gossip. It was a treat to be able to meet you all and I hope we get the chance to do it again soon. To those who weren't: perhaps we can think up an excuse to do this on a larger scale. I once doubted the wisdom of meeting fellow Avalonians beyond the boundary of this land but those doubts proved to be unfounded. Indeed. My first instinct when coming upon such polls is to flee......quickly. But I was weak and gave in even though I know full well that such polls are gathered by galactic idiots whose only goal in life is to hunt me down and insult my intelligence. So, as soon as I saw Kurt Cobain in the top five I knew my eyes would roll into the back of my head and stay there until I closed my browser. Also, the mere mention of Diana Ross in any context usually drives me into a rabid hate frenzy, but to list her and pass up, say, Link Wray, Roy Orbison or even Jeff Lynne to name a few more deserving, is a John Waters kind of sick. Anyway, I know most folks only have so much free space on their hard drives so I`ll cut out now before I can`t stop.
