I prefer the albums from Siren onwards as I rank Avalon as the best Roxy Music album and In Your Mind as Bryan Ferry's best solo work, but I'll listen to the earlier "glam" stuff anyday. Another terrible live version is "The Bogus Man", from the "Bête noire" tour, not a patch on the "Viva!" one. In this month's Record Collector magazine:- Remake/Remodel, Roxy get the remasters treatment.- "Virgin have announced that Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music back catalogues are to be reissued as luxury CD editions, with the Roxy albums appearing in a new, remastered form. The 19 Roxy albums from 1972's "Roxy Music" to 1983's "The high road", chart the band's progression from 70's Glam experiments to 80's sophisticates, and have been remastered by Bob Ludwig on HDCD (high definition compatible digital) discs. With all the CD's appearing in deluxe card sleeves, the first 5 are out in August, with the second batch following in October. Ferry's first 5 appear in September, with the final 4 due in October, which rather neatly coincide with Bryan's new solo album" JF. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 10:06:22 -0400 From: jspellman Subject: Re: [AVALON] For Better For Worse Gregory A. Could you explain it a little bit more? I always thought of the pre-Manifesto period as the most exciting live performances, After this the total Roxy Music package seem to be more a Brain Ferry package. I'm just a silly Roxy Music - Siren/Viva! lover, the rest isn't half as exciting for me. This is probably due to the fact that a lot of fond memories come from the time I almost solely listen to Roxy Music. > > > > > > > > Better studio- > > > > > > Dance Away > > > > That High Road version, sounds like a Broadway musicalor Vegas show tune. > Again here I think that Roxy Music style is replaced by Brain Ferry style, most of all I miss Paul Thompson on drums and Eddie Jobson on strings/synt/keyb! > > > > Out of the Blue > > > Both Ends Burning > > > > > > > Both Ends Burning better in the studios? They give this song an even more raw steamy edge it already had. I seem to remember the one on Heat still.... as flat and non exciting, but then again, it's been a long time ago I listened to HSB. > > > Bimbos!!!!! I received a taped copy as a trade (a mercy trade actually) about a year ago and was told it was a recalled version having something to do with a suit filed by some minister? Out Of The Blue just can`t be done without Jobson....period! Have a listen to the '75 New York or '74 Boston boot versions and you`ll hear one hell of a kick-ass tune. I said it before and I`ll say it again, Roxy was a band best experienced live and live was the only way to capture their true essence. My favorite live tracks: From the BBC Session boots- Grey Lagoons, Would You Believe From the '75 New York boot- Out Of The Blue, Mother Of Pearl, Jobson`s solo going into Whirlwind. From the '74 Boston boot- Prairie Rose, A Really Good Time From Viva! Live- Both Ends Burning, If There Is Something From the '76 New York boot- The Thrill Of It All Gene - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 07:00:33 -0700 From: Rod Le Cloux Subject: [AVALON] CD shopping in Europe HI, I'm going to be in Paris, France and Munich, Germany and Venice,Italy in a couple weeks.
