Perusing Kinksta's Peter York piece, lifted from Harpers, I was taken back in time to when I saw that Sunday Telegraph spread on the Ferry country home. I can still recall how shocked I was with this view through the Maestro's keyhole. I'd always bought into his witty parody of Sloane Ranger lifestyle : one remark from an earlier interview still astounds me - (Paraphrase) - "I pick up visually on the manners of the well-to-do. I love the way they wear down their bespoke shirts, the way the collars get worn by stubble, then these well healed guys wear these shirts at weekends open-necked." An eye for the minutiae of faded glamour...(or tight assed limeys depending on your viewpoint ! Either way my shirt collection bears the scars of this glorious affectation.) In a similar vein it may surprise under-thirtysomething Avalonians to know that the Another Time Another Place sleeve was considered by early Roxy aficionados to be extremely subversive. That Bel Air shoot was so out of kilter with modern Rock mores, (giving Manilo Blahnik a credit as Guest Cobbler or whatever, quite audacious), so outre, that it came as much as a shock to the system as seeing Sex Pistols on Top Of The Pops a few years later. No question, that image was viewed as just that, a temporary costume like 1974's Gaucho or David's Ziggy. Quite when this tuxedo'd mannequin took over his psyche, if indeed it did, is open to interpretation. And one can't help thinking that money played its part. The Avalon single video , mercilessly parodied by Andy and Phil in their Lorelei video, was perhaps the nadir of this Frankenstein's monster. Returning to the Peter York piece I should say that I was - like many others - - astonished by how DULL his living room appeared. Old world, yes, but charming, well, no. We scoured the photos for irony and were left with the deflating conclusion that Bry's art had finally imitated the life that he'd perhaps always aspired to. Now. The reason for this post apart from sharing a few memories with my dear Avalon set. York mentions the usual suspects - Hall, Cole, Moller, Lear - as pre-Lucy glam flames. One story that went around at the time but I haven't seen on this list : Amanda Lear was/is a transsexual. I thought this was common knowledge. Then again I thought Pastiche was genuine. Then again I thought Pastiche was genuine. Any thoughts ? Bryan was quoted recently in response to articles suggesting that Amanda was a a man. He said they were never intimate, though people had often assumed otherwise, and that she was always a laugh - one of the lads.... There were quotes from Bowie and others, too. I think it was a newspaper article that started this discussion again. The Sunday Times? The Observer? I saw recent footage of Amanda Lear in a programme about Salvador Dali. She does a very good job of being female, whether she started that way or not. Fragment from the (UK) "Times" newspaper, in the "Times Diary": Under the title "Baked Bugs": "Brian Eno plans to spend New Year's Eve with his tin-opener. The electro-musical virtuoso is worried that he could go hungry when 2000 strikes, courtesy of the millennium bug. He has been telling friends that he wants to hire a self-storage unit in Shepherd's Bush to stockpile food (tins of baked beans, sardines, Spam and other yummy delicacies). The charmingly eccentric Eno, who helped to found Roxy Music, is a regular contributor to "Wired", a bible for Internerders. Eno (with chum, below) is fascinated by the implicatios of computer meltdown."He's given the subject a lot of thought," I am told, "He is keen to bring North American survivalist techniques to Shepherd's Bush." I just hope the tin-opener doesn't get the bug. " There's an accompanying pic of Eno and a tin of a well known brand of baked beans (his "chum"). Don't anyone stitch me up for copyright, please!!! The piano arrangements don't always do the songs justice, and most of the cover versions are actually the arrangement done by the original artist. 'Hard Rain' sounds like an oom pah pah waltz. I have :- Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Greatest Hits, Flesh And Blood, Avalon Boys And Girls, Street Life 20 Great Hits, The Ultimate Collection, Taxi, Off The Record. The first 2 albums are not piano arrangements, but top line and chords and are not the best for your son to learn from. Off The Record is a 10 song compilation Rock Score which has every part written out like a score. I can suggest for your son to learn, Oh Yeah, Running Wild, Take A Chance With Me, More Than This, Dance Away, A Song For Europe, Editions Of You (Intro), Valentine. These sound ok as a piano piece. The Rock Score version of Kiss And Tell is a good one to see how Ferry threads several Keyboard and guitar parts which don't sound anything on there own but blend together to make an interestig arrangement. The Hollies even wrote a song about her beauty, "Hey Kari-Ann what's your game now etc." (True) Johnny Rogan's book lists her pre-Roxy squeeze list - a galaxy of male rock heterosexuality - and I had the weirdest encounter with her back in the 80s as my following tale (lifted from a previous Avalon posting) elucidates... Back in July 1982 I was sharing an appartment with a music journalist called Tim. The previous winter he'd been out of work and had taken on a Christmas Mail Delivery job as a temporary measure to keep the wolves from the door. His co-worker at the Post Office turned out to be Chris Jagger, brother of Avalon effigy Mick, and husband to .....none other than Kari-Ann Mueller (the delightful pin-up from the first Roxy album.) Now you're probably wondering "what's the brother of one of Britain's wealthiest men doing trudging the icy streets of Camden Town delivering Christmas cards ?" And I do not know the answer except to say that there has been some record of sibling rivalry in the press. This tale also contains an irony in the context of a later Roxy cover girl's defection to a Jagger. But back to my story. The following summer Tim and I decide to hold a Saturday night party with a "Naval" theme, and I was thrilled that Tim has invited Kari-Ann along with Chris. The night before the party we were hanging around the flat working on our outfits - for the record I was styling myself on the 12" single sleeve of The Associates' "Waiting For The Loveboat" - and there's a ring on the door. I am ironing my tunic standing in my pink sea-island cotton boxer shorts as Kari-Anne and Chris enter the room. They had come the wrong night. I stood there aghast. My adolescent dream-girl was now in my dreamhome, and all I could offer her was some unchilled cheap white wine and some pickled onions. She was wearing something fairly new romantic with a sash - not unlike our dear Kicki's website - and I still shudder at the recollection of her disdainful fairwell, saying they were unavailable the following night. At least the following did turn up to the party : Dave Stewart, Clem Burke (Blondie drummer) and a couple of guys from Madness. Timing. Life is all about timing.
