I was just waiting for the report on Rolling Stones concert in Cologne as I suddenly saw some vaguely familiar face smiling in the camera. It was just a 2 seconds shot, with a mention that lots of prominent people took part in some race party in Essex?, England, hold by some earl there who is crazy about car racing. "Roxy music lead vocalist Bryan Ferry also attended", as they put it. Well, he looked strange. First I thought it was...Tony Blair. My friend who saw it too said the same thing. Short hair, large sun glasses ("In Your Mind" kind), sort of official black suit with a tie. Came quite unexpected. P.S. And they said nothing about Stones. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 12:29:45 EDT From: JFROXY@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Roxy radio 2 Hi, heard "Avalon" on BBC Radio 2 today, afterwhich the DJ said that the Roxy Music story would be broadcast on 10th July. The one you're probably thinking of was called The Bryan Ferry Story and was broadcast in 3 parts on Radio 1. Perhaps this one (appealing to you Radio 2 types :-) is an edit. Timing? Hang on, let me think... the conversation was three years ago now, and it was about something that happened over 30 years previously, so forgive me if details are a little sketchy... I asked her whether he was recognisable then as the groovy lounge-lizard that he became known as, and she said that he wasn't at all (he obviously hadn't quite managed to shake off those geordie roots at that point!). In fact - shock - she said that he wasn't a particularly nice person. More revealingly, she said that she remembered him as a bit of a dreamer, more of a thinker than a do-er - he was always having these fantastic ideas, but putting them into action was something he'd have a bit of trouble with (he wasn't in a band at the time either, although she does remember him being very interested in music). I got the impression that he wasn't especially happy at Durham - she described it as "a time he'd probably rather forget" (hence the fact that he spent a year at Durham is very seldom mentioned?), and that it was when he went to Newcastle and met/was taught by Richard Hamilton (whom she said was a very great influence on him) that things really started moving for him. So chronologically, correct me if I'm wrong, this means that Bryan's mid/late '60s pans out as follows: Summer '64: Finshes school, and spends the summer singing with The Banshees 1964/65: Durham University 65/66, 66/67, 67/68: Newcastle University (also singing with The Gas Board) Summer/autumn 1968: moves to London 1968-1970: various jobs, including building site work and teaching art at a girls' school (does anyone have more details on this period?) 1970: Forms Roxy Music (or was this 1971?) Hope this was interesting. Japanese VHS Video. Incredibly hard to find. This one-hour video covers a TV performance by Bryan Ferry around the "Let's Stick Together" period. The band backing him are the same players who played on that album, including Chris Spedding, Phil Manzanera, John Wetton and Paul Thompson. This video features Ferry singing mostly solo material from "These Foolish Things" and "Let's Stay Together" and one or two Roxy songs from the first two albums. This video is a must for any Ferry or Roxy fan and a chance to catch the master crooner at the height of his career. Winner pays 3.50 shipping. Good luck and check out my other auctions! The way they describe it is not very good. It must be the '77 In your mind tour. Maybe it is live at the Budakan Hall, the bootleg of this concert is The Sting Of El Ferranti. The title is much better than the sound quality. Maybe John knows this tape? And the technicians.... Japanese VHS is that The American or The european system, in other words can you play this on a normal player? I've wondered about that extra year - I put it down to a 4-year course, but the Durham information is completely new to me. Good work, Mr Sturdy. Newcastle University would probably offer graduation information to anyone sufficiently curious about this. For the record, though he's always said to have studied there, I don't recall any information about Bryan having obtained a degree. I'd be pleased if he didn't, in fact. It was made using the computer specification White BOOK standard. If you have a PC with a fairly current(last couple) years CD-ROM drive you should have no problem playing it. If it doesn't play then that usually means your PC CD-Rom drive was manufactured before that spec came out. You probably also need to meet minimum processor speeds ie Pentium ect. I'm sure his knowledge of the software is right - the only system specifications on the cover are : Minimum specifications: Pentium 60, 8Mb RAM, Windows 3.1 or higher, double speed CD ROM. Recommended specs : Pentium 90, 8 Mb RAM, Windows 3.1 or higher and quad speed CD ROM. I had no trouble installing it whatsoever - it plays full screen, very smoothly and the live performances (beyond the opening mime) are, I think, nothing short of excellent. My personal faves - a distinctly Bowiesque Let's Stick Together by Paper Parrot (!) and a dance version of Virginia Plain by Johnny Bic and Slamm. (bizarrely this works) Who could not warm to a version of Street Life by Clit (sic) Richards? I wonder if the band who cover 'The Price of Love' -who are called Kill the Music Press will receive the full support of the music critics. Who could miss the subtle irony of a cover version by a band called The Dead Jerry Halls? Most of the others stick fairly close to the original arrangements, the main difference being the variable standard of warbling on these tracks, and a certain amount of poetic license shown towards the correct lyrics. Who could not love the pseudo Seventies Music For Pleasure/KTel cover that looks as if it has been printed on a ten year old inkjet? Even the track listing on the case doesn't match the CD - Nice touch! But the best part of all - the complete order was only ?1.64 INCLUDING delivery and VAT.
