Enjoy! Great stuff Kicki, the article is indeed brilliant. I did smile, however, when I read: "Of course, as we all know now, BA Fine Arts Durham, studied under Richard Hamilton." He didn't actually study under Richard Hamilton at Durham - that was at the University of Newcastle, which was where he ended up after he dropped out of Durham after his first year. These seem to be the favorites among most Eno fans. They`re quite cerebral and the tunes are just wonderful. Tiger Mnt. easily places in my top 5 all time favorite albums. You can go to: http://www.hyperreal.org/music/artists/brian_eno/lyrics.html for lyrics and an overview of what the songs mean. A lot of his music that came after is instrumental (Music for Airports, Music for Films, Apollo) Phil Manzanera`s early solo albums (Diamond Head is fabulous!) is a colaboration with Eno which lead to the formation of the band 801. There is an 801 live album which is also a must have and this album is promised to be re-released in it entirity soon. Of course, the default music played during the loading of Windows is by Eno. Good luck, Gene - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 16:43:45 EDT From: JFROXY@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Eno In a message dated 21/06/99 08:55:45 GMT Daylight Time, decophile@pipeline.com writes: << Hi Amy, Perhaps the best start would be Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) and Here Come The Warm Jets. It contains all styles of weird and wonderful tunes and also features all of the Roxy line-up at the time, bar Ferry. "Tiger Mountain" is also an excellent album, but maybe not as quirky or humorous as "Warm jets". Recommended. Say Something!! > [...] > Let hear from you lurkers. I'll take the challenge ... I've actually been subscribed to this list for years, and have posted a few times in the past, but the infrequency of said posts probably makes me convincingly a lurker. I roughly know the names and personalities of the list, past and present, but I admit I have not been a regular reader of avalon postings. Indeed, I now subscribe only to the digest form, and it often gets lost in the flurry of work-related mail I trudge through each day. As for discussions concerning Ferry's most recent work, I'm afraid I'm a bit uneducated. I own all of Ferry's solo albums, but I shamefully admit that I _still_ have not adequately, purposefully listened to either Bete Noir or Mamouna all the way through. That is, though said albums may have been playing in the background at my home, I've yet to listen to them with full attention, without distraction, so I'll save any comments on those for another day. As for the others, in general I've enjoyed the covers albums over his self-penned works. My introduction to Ferry/Roxy was through the borrowing of my brother's copy of Street Life. The first album I purchased myself was Bride Stripped Bare, and though I don't hold it as the pinnacle of Ferry's work, the fact that it was first gives it a special place on my listening shelf. 1992 was when I really began to appreciate Roxy/Ferry. I toured Europe that summer as part of an orchestra, and among the few cassettes I brought along for the long bus rides I happened to bring Bride and Heart Still Beating. Again, not necessarily the best albums of either Ferry or Roxy, but listening to those same tapes again and again, rolling through southern Europe, with little else to do, left a mark on my psyche from which I haven't recovered. Brainwashing or true affection? Who knows ... Interesting note (or I thought it interesting at the time) ... While driving through southern France that summer, our bus did pass a roadsign which indicated the city of Frejus, noted on the back of Heart Still Beating as the concert location, to be within a few kilometers of our location. Of course, it appears that whether the concert took place there may be in some dispute, with the similarity between the HSB performances and High Road (which claims Glasgow as its source location)? I've only seen Bryan in concert once (Berkeley, CA, Mamouna tour), and I'm afraid I'm too young to have seen Roxy. Well, I _could_ have seen them, but at that age I don't think I would have been too interested.
