Shocking, Martin Stockman. Just *shocking*. You too, Han. The wonderful Pyjamarama? Valentine? Angel Eyes? Reading other people's hitlists is wonderfully horrifying and I love it. Thanks for panning Stronger Through the Years. My pet theory is that it's about getting wrecked in the local and that the last minute dubs to change 'beers' to 'years' was on the advice of disconcerted record company executives. Just catch that singing style. (I know there are great live versions, but that's a poor excuse at best.) "Another TIme, Another Place" is a rather silly record, isn't it? When I was 13, I thought that "Help me make it through the night" was the most beautiful song I had ever heard! Ferry crooning "Take the ribbon from your hair" was powerful stuff for a teenager. Actually, it's a celebration of the thrills of fast driving. Those lyrics really read, 'stronger through the gears'... And after those BETE NOIRE reviews, perhaps it should have been 'stronger through the jeers'... I think Martin Stockman's 'worst of' is barmy, just barmy. ( Am I the only person who is quite fond of 'my little girl'?) Though I must admit to having struggled with ' Wildcat Days.' That Eno noise, like an elephant copulating, has always seemed to me pretty uncool. I couldn't do a 'worst of', not only because I genuinely like all Ferry's tracks, but because i do believe that loving - really loving - an artist's work - includes appreciating the very lowest moments of their work. For example, I adore Al Green. This does not entail simply loving 'let's stay together', which after all anyone can do - it entails also loving his version of 'white christmas' - very much more challenging! Frank's 'only the lonely', sure...but are you man enough to like his 'Mrs Robinson'?? And just try some of Ray Charles' eighties Nashville tracks! But I wouldn't want to part with any of these things. And I have developed a real affection for that copulating elephant! Also adore "Could it Happen to Me". And Trash is neat. I'll agree that Rain, Rain, Rain and Cry, Cry, Cry are Bad, Bad, Bad. And as much as I love Eno, when I heard Wildcat Days I was like "that's it?". Perhaps that was the payback for letting Eno slip away and make great records with Bowie while Roxy made "nice" records towards the end. Worst Ferry song hands down for me - One Kiss Worst covers - Midnight Hour and Hold on I'm Coming Bryan is many things but he is not Sam nor Dave. Never been able to stomach the 2nd solo album so I don't know how bad it is besides the two hits (which are great) I also think Dance with Life reminds me of what Rod Stewart and Elton John has turned into the last 20 years and is so UnFerry. I'm still miffed that the original Angel Eyes was left off the Manifesto CD in favor of the disco version. It's not like it's not on enough of the greatest hits collections, and why try and change history, I still haven't dropped the $80 to get the real version on the box set. But I do like The Bob, Chosen One and 7 Deadly Sins and all of Bete Noir for that matter. Bring back Johnny Marr and get rid of David "chica chica" Williams. There are also a few songs that I really didn't like when I heard it for the first time but after listening a little bit longer I liked them. For instance the first time I heard "are you lonesome tonight' I thought I was listening to a kind of band that plays evergreens on weddings Yacky Brrr. The same happened to me with 'He'll have to go'. Nowadays I even put them on my compilation tapes. But we have to admit that there's a lot of space between Virginia plain and Put you sweet lips a little closer to the phone. If you're not English it's much easier to ignore those sweetie sweet lyrics. I can imagine that Amazing grace is to much for the English and American. I really like the music, a very warm sound. the Dutch version of this song 'waarheen, waartoe' by Mieke Telkamp is really horrifying. It's for years the number one in the Top ten of songs that are played at funerals. At the time they play it most of the people are wishing to be dead too. This weekend I promise to listen very carefully to the lyrics of Pyjamarama. Regards Han PS Thanks Bahi for the reviews of Bete Noire and the amusing notes at the end of it.
