It is now seen as an American national treasure, and is owned by the Smithsonian Institute. On 2 July, in a one-off show put together specially for Meltdown 99, the music from Harry Smith's Anthology is performed with a contemporary edge by today's stars of radical music. The evening is led by Nick Cave, and includes an appearance by Jarvis Cocker. The full line-up is yet to be confirmed, but Cave follows in the footsteps of other famous Meltdown director/performers, including Elvis Costello, and Laurie Anderson. Anderson appeared on stage in Meltdown 97, with Philip Glass, Bill T Jones, Lou Reed, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Wilson, Michael Nyman, and Salmon Rushdie." - --------------- A seating plan gadget and a list of available tickets is online here so you can sort it out before you book. - -------------- And some web stuff (from 1997 but new to me) that the excellent Google suggested in response to a lazily chosen search query. Reminded me of a picture in Rogan's book of Ferry next to some fish - a shark? - that he apparently caught: Hollywood actress NICOLE KIDMAN shares a gruesome interest with singers BRYAN FERRY and NICK CAVE - great white sharks. All three were guests at a recent London art exhibition, dedicated to the prowess of the deadly creatures. Artist SEBASTIAN HORSLEY, 34, has been obsessed by the sharks since childhood and went diving off Australia to observe them before putting paint on canvas. He now believes one of his gory $11,200 (7,000) works could have been secretly snapped up by Kidman and her hearthrob husband TOM CRUISE. Horsley says, "One has just been sold rather mysteriously to Los Angeles and we think they could be behind it. "My paintings are very big, very violent and they're very disturbing. They seem to be being bought by perverts. " PORTRAIT OF A LADY star Kidman is eager to follow in the flipper-steps of Horsley, and go diving to look for sharks. Horsley says, "She still seemed quite interested after I told her what it's like. She's quite gutsy I think." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 11:39:48 -0700 From: Heather Propes Subject: Re: [AVALON] meltdown > > >And some web stuff (from 1997 but new to me) that the excellent Google >suggested in response to a lazily chosen search query. She probably just went to the exhibit to ditch Tom Cruise and see Bryan and Nick.
