No wind-up. Robert Elms has just announced on London station GLR that Nick Cave has added Bryan Ferry to the last night of the Southbank Meltdown Festival, July 2nd 1999, at the Royal Festival Hall. The gig seems to have various titles, The Harry Smith Project with guest Jarvis Cocker, seems to be the most accurate. Ive just booked tickets on 0171 960 4242, althoughthe Box Office guy couldn't confirm Bry's involvement. I called GLR and spoke to the guy who got it directly from Nick Cave that Ferry was playing. Might explain why he ducked out of that Euro-Jazz date same night. Am checking for more information.. (Excuse poor grammar / punctuation .. am a trifle excited by news ...) It would be a shrewd move on the part of IE management and Ferry - last year's Meltdown (organised by John Peel) is rapidly becoming something of a a legend. Nick Cave's choices are being heavily promoted and the last night of the series (2 July) features Van Dyke Parkes and Howie B among a long list of others I'd love to see play. If Bryan's name appears on a line-up picked by Cave, he'll receive a much-needed (in the UK, at least) dose of street cred. Have booked in case Ferry shows but if he doesn't, it'll be a great gig anyway. (The RFH still hadn't heard anything about it, though they did say that if Robert Elms announced it, it's probably sound. I don't know who Elms is.) B >Okay. Robert Elms is now a 30/40 something journalist / dj who is probably most famous for being Sade's beau in the heady eightees. In those days he was very much homme du jour in these parts, hanging out with Steve Strange et al, writing alternative travel books - and one really dreadful Absolute Beginnerish novel called In search of the Crack. He now does a morning radio show on the excellent London station GLR, a station that has a playlist of almost exclusively new / indie rock. He interviewed Stump a few weeks ago and I, for once, had to turn him off as they droned on about the post-Stranded downturn in Ferry's ouevre. Truth is ... I'm still doing it. Hope to complete it next Tuesday night. When you borrow studio time from professionals they tend to get flakey. I shall report to the list next Wednesday. I'd like to apologise to all Avalonions who are missing their tapes, especially John O'B and Han. I'll make it up to all of you - an extra copy of the finished article ? Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry AND Jarvis Cocker playing in one place at the same time. A pantheon of songwriting brilliance, but it should be called "A Tribute To Scott Walker" since he influenced them all so much. Wish I were going. Can't wait to hear the report. If this is the reason why he don't play in Swiss there is still a chance he plays in The Hague. The North Sea Jazz site is still announcing him and obvious Bryan has a band to play with. So Frank and all the other Dutch readers there is some hope! Is there a site for this Meltdown festival? Maybe John can call Mr Enthoven if this meltdown news is true. BTW this weekend I got my copy of the Psalm cd-set. Really great, especially if you like the first years of Roxy. The video of Psalm is hilarious! And this cd makes clear what a great part of the Roxy sound and style is the Andy's merit.
