And our Maestro is mentioned in the headline! "Ferry and BB King on Northsea Jazz Festival" I expect very much of this performance. On a 'normal' concert you know he plays the half of the time the standards like Do the strand, Love is the drug etc. After all this years listening I always enjoy much more the new and unknown numbers. In this concert it looks like we get something different with more room for his voice and a complete set of unknown numbers. It looks like our Bryan gives his career a new twist and I like it. I've been to the festival before and The 'Tuinpaviljoen' (a tent in the garden) is one of the best places for a performance. Far much better then the 'Statenhal' in which most of the more Pop-orientated groups are doing there concert. Let's meet each other! It was widely thought, in fact, that Ferry WAS gay when Roxy first hit the world - one of the group's earliest supporters was Denis Lemon, the editor of Britain's GAY NEWS paper in the seventies. Lemon assumed - understandably - that only a gay man would dress like that and purse his lips in that way. And of course Ferry's closest non-musical colleague and friend, Antony Price, is gay as a daisy. How could someone with such exquisite taste be anything but? (and not Mr. Thompson's drumming...) > > Good choice Greg. I think no other Roxy/ Bryan song conveys suffering as well as this one does. And the version on Concert Classics conveys it tremendously with Bryan almost crying into the mic, as if he's on the verge of nervous breakdown. Of course Manifesto as an album has to be viewed in isolation. It was a balancing act. Ferry was as low comercially (though definitely not artistically) as he's ever been. Drastic action was needed and this came in the form of an album with a guaranteed single on it (Dance Away) and an East side and West side so that it would not alienate anyone. Bryan (by demand I think) was taking himself less seriosly than at any other time in his career (French sitcom, toying with Kenny Everett). It just goes to show that he really cares about what the public thinks. That's why I think he is well aware of this list. But credit where it's due - he always delivers some rare gems no matter what the commercial demands are and there is no better example of this than Stronger Through The Years. Your right to say the bass line is what makes the song what it is. It echoes the wonderful feel of melancholy in Bryans voice. I just wonder did it originate from the Bride sessions. There is no doubt that he took the Jerry thing hard and this song seems to echo that sentiment to the very depths of despair. Just to add that also excellent on this album are the original of Angel Eyes as well as Manifesto, Still Falls The Rain, and I also have a soft spot for Trash. Cry, Cry, Cry is definitely the worst Roxy song ever. Anyway I'm off now for a few months but here's hoping that we'll all meet up in Montreaux. Perhaps a better word is 'menacing,' as the rapid chirping of the oboe in the end seems really bizarre to me... The bass line is absolutely killer and is what keeps the song moving... (and not Mr. Thompson's drumming...) Gregory, I've always loved this track. Very much in the Bogus Man/For Your Pleasure groove of dark sinister lyrical/thematic undertones combined with interesting sounds. In an interview with Nick Kent in '79 BF agreed with Kent that some Manifesto sounds reminisced back to Roxy 1 and 2 days; I always thought they were talking about Manifesto East Side and STTY in particular. But I do like Thompson's drumming. With the risk of overanalysing the song, the bass line (so Jaco Pastorius) is really good, the lyric, vocal, PM guitar break and Mackay's sax loop (in the final section) are all inspired. But then again, one of my favourite Roxy tracks is so-called "experiment", The Bogus Man... Someone once mentioned that STTY was about Jews throughout the ages. Maybe, but I'm sceptical. But BF usually combines 3 or 4 themes in one lyric, one of which is nearly always introspective. Gareth wrote: Of course Manifesto as an album has to be viewed in isolation. It was a balancing act. Koetting" Subject: [AVALON] "Manifesto" Again, I've been listening to Manifesto (the album), and I've decided to go ahead and post a few remarks regarding the title track... As I've said before, there are only about three songs on Manifesto I really enjoy: "Stronger Through the Years," and "Spin Me Round" are two of the three. I also very much enjoy the title track as I find it to be the most divergent and interesting of Ferry's work on the album. I have no idea what sort of style Mr. Ferry is trying to make, but the song overall seems to have most 'blue collar' effect I've ever seen from Ferry... I read once (probably through this mailing list) that Ferry was particularly proud of the lyrics to this particular song although he didn't seem to get much recognition for them. Two things in this song are very different to me from most Roxy songs- the drumming and the bass line take prominence over keyboards and are key to the atmosphere created in this song. Again, not to say that Paul Thompson isn't great, but the drumming here is just very solid and to me; a bit more pronounced than usual. I've always enjoyed the sort of double-entendre of the song- the sort of the cynical commercialist 'we're the re-made, re-modeled Roxy Music and we've made this 'manifesto,'" and the suppose you really had to think about what you stand for, if not politically, perhaps in a 'what's your paradigm for how people as a group should live.' His lyrics for this song really are unsual- no female attractions, no world-weariness romantic hope against hopelessness sort of thing, yet he draws an interesting caricature of a man who has a sort of the 'rage against the machine,' particularly with the.. "I am that I am from out of nowhere..." verse. I would be curious as to when Ferry actually wrote the song.... By the way- I have heard "Manifesto II," and I can only say it is a very pale and uninspiring version of the song. Sounds like the band A-Ha tried to cover it... greggie/atlanta "a crazy guy, he'd rather die than be tied down" - -bryan ferry '79 - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #148 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
