Montreux was, of course, the desolate out-of-season setting for "Bride Stripped Bare," an angst ridden, booze fueled masterpiece. (Remember how Alan Spenner got so out of it on the 90 minute flight from London that he had to be carried off the plane.) In summer I understand that it is altogether a more glamourous affair. Yes Kicki, you can go to the ball and I shall drink from your crystal slipper. So who's up for this jaunt ? Transantlantic air fares are rock bottom. Lets stick together... " Bryan Ferry sings Jazz." My love for Bryan is second to no-one's, but I'm dead certain he can't sing Jazz! Let's hope this simply means he'll be - harrumph - 'covering' standards! But despite reservations it all sounds very exciting. Many of us on this list have hoped he would at some time do an 'unplugged' performance. Perhaps at these festivals he'll be working with a small group line-up and doing something approaching that. And here I am stuck in America! Hope one of you who's going will surreptitiously tape and bootleg the whole damn thing! Mind you, there's a major Jazz festival in Rhode Island each summer - or maybe Mass, can't remember. And can't remember the name of it. But if Ferry is on the festival circuit, maybe he'll show up there. The band Mansun are big Magazine fans, and they managed to coax him out of retirement to co-write and sing on a track. I forget the song's title, but it appeared as an EP track not so long ago, and it's pretty good if memory serves - quite Magazine-ish circa Correct Use of Soap. I'm not aware of any Devoto-related internet resources . . . anyone feel like setting up a mailing list? Koetting" Subject: [AVALON] "Stronger Through the Years" So I have been listening to Manifesto for the last week or so... I posted some opinions about my beloved "Spin Me Round" recently and I thought I'd continue thread a little more here with some feelings upon my re-listening to "Stronger Through the Years." I remember as I was first getting into Roxy Music way back in the semi-early eighties I was 'wowed' by Avalon and sought to get the rest of the Roxy catalog little by little. I first bought Flesh+Blood and of course, enjoyed it thoroughly. Mind you, at this point of my musical tastes, I was still thinking that Duran Duran was really cool... Manifesto was sort of my first "Roxy" foray into uncharted territories (aside from "Viva"). When I got it, I really only enjoyed three songs on it and hated the rest. Not much has changed, although I think I understand a little better why I didn't care for some of the songs. Most of them are just silly. "Cry (x3)" is horrible, as well as "My Little Girl." I even hated the singles, although the original mix to "Angel Eyes" is cool. But, "Stronger Through the Years" seemed very mysterious to me. Perhaps a better word is 'menacing,' as the rapid chirping of the oboe in the end seems really bizarre to me... The bass line is absolutely killer and is what keeps the song moving... (and not Mr. Thompson's drumming...) For many years, I didn't know the lyrics to virtually any of the Roxy songs as only the last two albums came with any liner notes, and (being a queen) not fully understanding the lyrics to "Stronger Through the Years, I thought the following verse: Silver lips Kisses borrowed Glances steal To the quick How they quiver Too late They're sealed was actually: sudden lips chase this ballroom glassy steel <--- (who knows where that came from) to be quick are they queer? too late they see us.... And, of course, for the longest time I thought 'our maestro' was some sort of a homophobe. And again, being a queer, I thought that I might have to make the decision that Mr. Ferry wouldn't be included in my 'favorite artists' category of musicians.... Fortunately, for me, I have found that Bryan Ferry is appreciative of his queer audioence and even enjoys Noel Coward! But musically, the song is so amazing- the wide synthesizer notes, the eerie 'wave pattern guitar,' the factoried goose-stepped rhythms, the explosive 'fourth of July' synths after the lyrics are done.... The long ending is great with the 'nearly atmospheric' burn between the rhythms and the synths... Oh dear, I just realized I've written too much and said too little again... greggie/atlanta "now the ballroom's empty.." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 00:56:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Pim Rebholz Subject: Re: [AVALON] montreux appearance - --- Tim Kendrick wrote: > Dear God.
