"AEIOU" was a really cool song. We danced to it a lot at Knott's Berry Farm, which was the only place we could get in at 15. I always equated them with Captain Sensible, for some reason, with that song, "Wot." I have a CD with a German version of that, btw. > the more I noticed the sinister undertones hidden underneath the tracks of > macho bravodo..esp. after reading the lyrics to the long version. Don't forget Josie Cotton, Devo, (Mark already mentioned them), and the Go Go's. It was also one of the last times there were actually some decent bands out of L.A. - The Gun Club, X, the Blasters. The "too cool for words" punk star not even shaking your hands. I am convinced that we were a mean generation, always snarling, threatening each other, trying to intimidate with our looks. Subcultural kids today seeem so nice, this britpop scene, with all their hugging and cardigan sweaters and biscuits, they act like the love each other sooo much. Yet, something about it seems a bit sinister. I can't put my finger on it. It's almost too "cute." I was a fan of them. I had a thingfor Tracy Warmsworth, great bass player who surfaced in one of Sting's bands in the late 80's. While we are totaly astray, has anybody heard of a band called Magazine? I used to hang at the local college radio staion about 79-80 and the DJ used to play this song called "Definitive Gaze" It was punk or new wave, had a quirky verse and an instrumental chorus. I loved that song but nobody I know has ever heard of them. Anybody? I too have been a Waitresses fan from the early eighties and sad to hear of Patti Donahue's demise. Magazine ... In college I was also a big fan of theirs. In '83 I got the opportunity to see Howard Devoto (lead singer of Magazine) at a small club in Houston. There were probably no more than 30 people in the audience. The show was awesome but the set was much too short. I went to see the Talking Heads the night at a huge venue and anyone with a ticket stub got in free the next night for Howard Devoto and only 30 people showed. Funny how things work out.
