["Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] brush with greatness The Waitresses were from Kent, Ohio -- where I went to school and next to which I have always lived. one night when we went to a bar (the great JB's) to see Tin Huey, the Waitresses performed and the lead singer, Patti Donahue, who unfortunately died a couple of years ago, sat at our table. yes, the Waitresses were responsible for the theme song of "Square Pegs." which all brings me to my fave period of my musical existence -- the Akron Sound!! Stiff (the greatest record label in the history of the UNIVERSE)put out a compilation entitled The Spirit of Akron (my hometown). I have never had so much fun as the period from 1975 thru 1985 (if I had to choose a ten year period). almost every single one of my current musical faves (their CDs are in my CD player constantly) came from the 70s: Roxy Music, Bruce Springsteen, Split Enz, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Eno, Lou Reed, John Cale & Patti Smith. I was head over heels for Devo, XTC, the Clash, the Beat, David Bowie, Johnny Rotten, Talking Heads, etc etc. I made my own t-shirts for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the dark, Deaf School & Ultravox! (don't forget the exclamation point!)(yes I KNOW I am the only Deaf School fan -- that would ever admit it)(was anyone else at Mosport, Canada, the Heatwave Festival in the summer of 1980??)The best part of that period was the opportunity to attend a plethora of really great concerts. they were many, cheap and small!! I also spent a bazillion dollars on seven inch picture sleeve import singles -- had to have every one I saw it seemed! since ... then... there are only a few musical artists that I would say I REALLY like as much: the Smiths/Morrissey, James, the Cranberries & Chris Isaak to name some. - --TriTri - -----Original Message----- From: Heather Marie Propes roughly in the same category with SL would be The Waitresses, same >early-80's early-kitschy sort of new wave sound. What is it with Men and thir compulsion to make lists ? Here goes: Preference snapshot as at 7/5/99: 1. Stranded 2. Avalon 3. Siren 4. Country Life 5. For Your Pleasure 6. Flesh and Blood 7. Roxy Music 8. Manifesto Notes I would love Rhett Davies to remix the first album. Unfortunately I dislike Sinfield's production and..dare I say it...Ferry's vocals are just too strained at this point. For Your Pleasure is a work of genius but plays, to me, like a compilation of singles, esp Side 1 ; almost too heady for me. And Side 2 borders on indulgent. Stranded pips it because lyrically he's at a peak, the songs are universally strong and the playing is excellent. (V.interersting what Gareth reported Chris Thomas as saying about Serenade.) Avalon is a classic. I know the hardliners think its a bit soppy but Hubbard's guitar and Bryan's vocals are imperious. And we all know it's really a solo album... Siren, to me, is underestimated on the list. LITG can be a bit of a pain but there are wonders within, esp Both Ends, Sentimental Fool, and Could it happen to me. Ooh and End of the line. I'm glad to see the wonderful Spin Me Round getting some recognition on the list, although Manifesto (as an album) is the only disc never to grow on me. And finally I should add that 3 solo albums, Foolish Things, Bride, Boys and Girls, would make my all time BF/RM top 5. At the risk of sounding flippant this exercise reminds me of an appalling story from a Brecht (?) play when a mother has to choose which of her sons has to be executed. Truth is, I love them all. pip pip Martino - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #140 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
