What a great load of laughs I've been having whilst catching up on my mail. A great story from our Loch Ness friend, the usual crew of Martmouna, Spellman, Kicki, Han, Matan!!! all in fabulous form. This place is getting better with age. Pastische??? I've just looked at it in the knowledge that it's a hoax. Must say I'm surprised you were all fooled BUT I can say that NOW can't I. At the same time very well thought out. Very few people on this list with that kind of knowledge. So who the hell is the smart ass??? Beats me, that's for sure. Have you heard Isle of View, their acoustic album ? Yours, condition stable, Martini<< Yes Mart, although it was kept a secret by Warner Brothers. It only sold 82,000, mostly because they treated her like she was Bryan Ferry and gave it no promotion at all in the States. When asked what she thought about the lack of push by WB she said the true fans found it and bought it and she has no desire to be #1 because "shit floats to the top". On Saturdays I took the bus downtown to but issues of the Melody Maker and some good LP's. Being a Swede in the suburban American middleclass landscape was an intresting and educational experience. But I vividly remembering reading an interview with Phil Manzanera and Bill MacCormick in Melody Maker and thinking: why didn't I spend the year in the UK instead? "801 Live" was, and still is, one of my favorite '70's albums. Together with "Viva! Roxy Music" they are the only two live albums from that periods that I own both on vinyl and CD. Listening to Phil Manzanera/801 "Live at Manchester University 1977" is like finding a good bootleg. If one compares it to "801 Live", or the version of "Out of the Blue" to the "Viva! Roxy Music" version, they are inferior. Simon Philips is a better drummer then Paul Thompson. Brian Eno is a better singer then Simon Ainley, etc. The charm is of a snapshot value. Jim Lawn's notes are good and helpful in putting it all in perspective. "Live at Manchester University 1977" grows on you. It will never be as good as "801 Live", but for us Manzanera fans is nice to hear his excellent guitar playing and his voice introducing the band. And I like Simon Ainley introducing "Remote Control" with: "This is your chance to pogo". Oh, how I remember the Sex Pistols in Stockholm 1977... My early punk memories are more the post-punk/alternative L.A. scene - X, Lords of the New Church, 45 Grave, The Cramps, Cathedral of Tears, Johnny Thunders, the Scream, the Fetish. Life as described in a Brett Easton Ellis novel. Oh how I longed to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in those days. I never did. Philips is probably technically superior to P.T. in some respects, but in terms of the Roxy sound, and the B.F. sound, Thompson is unrivalled. Paul Thompsom lived in my town for a couple of years in the early 80's and I met him several times. With a similarly Roxy-commited friend I did a photo-shoot in a local hall for a drum catalogue that P.T. was contracted to. (Tama drums as in the "Manifesto" tour). Listening to P.T. jamming and generally tub-thumping was a revelation..the guy is inspired and his technique flawless. Phillips suffers, in my view, from that slight edge of over-elaboration that can characterise musicians who tend to concentrate on largely studio work. C'mon Daniel, lets have an apology for Paul!
