Actually when I went there (late 80's) Ferry was considered much more hip.Bowie had lost his edge and was in a low period. Most Berklee students don't idolize Jagger or Bowie types rather they dig session players the way most people would a singer or group. Big fans of Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Tony Levin, Nile Rodgers Omar Hakim you name it. Bryan gave them all a forum where it was cool to do their thing on a pop record. He was thought of as a Steely Dan of the 80s in this regard. This was the time of B&G and BN. Of coarse that could have all changed in ten years, but quite often you would see an ad for a sax player or drummer needed for original band influences Bowie, Roxy, Japan etc.. His stuff was on the radio quite frequently back then.
