Hi; I was going to post something similar, but Greggie beat me to it. I've had a copy for a couple days and can't seem to keep it out of the CD changer. I personally really like it about 2/3 of the way through where things take kind of a dark turn with "Pollen Path" and "All of My Mother's Names", but I really hate to pick favorites yet, as I will obviously need to absorb this one over a period of time; a pleasant departure, given the seemingly disposable nature of so much music lately (although the possibility exists that I am just jaded). The whole CD is excellent. As Greggie said, there are strong spiritual and romantic themes running throughout the album. Excellent guitar playing from Marc Ribot (my current fave, guitar junkie that I am) amongst superb performances from all involved. There is kind of a "retro" feel at times which I attribute to the presence of the Fender Rhodes, a sound that is definitely etched in time. Another interesting approach is that Sylvian has taking to using the occasional sample to build his tunes around. Exceptionally cool ones too-Mahavishnu Orchestra, John Cage, John Lee Hooker. (Supposedly this CD was held up due to issues regarding the clearance of the John Lee Hooker sample.) Also, overall there is more of a bluesy feel to the material than in the past, to my ears anyway. I read something somewhere that made allusions to a vaguely "Waits-ish" (as in Tom) approach at times, but I would personally attribute that to the presence of Ribot (frequently Waits' guitarist of choice), because they certainly bear no resemblance vocally. I am a big Waits fan so don't get me wrong, but Sylvian has damn near the best voice I have ever heard (along with BF of course). It's just so brutally rich and gorgeous. I don't think that any Ferry fan, particularly a fan of his later solo stuff, could go wrong with this one. Right now, it just keeps getting better with each listen. Bye. I spoke to him recently and asked him a few questions that I thought might be of interest to our mailing list. He was the first guy to be Bryan Ferry on 'Stars In Their Eyes' (1991), the camaraman was a Ferry fan and said to him 'at long last,' . He sent a tape of him singing Jealous Guy and Lets Stick Together and a photo. They invited him onto the show on the strength of this. He wanted to do Let's Stick Together, but the Musical Director insisted that it had to be Dance Away. Nat King Cole won the show that night, so mike didn't have any more appearances. He doesn't know if the real Mr. Ferry seen the show. He has never met him. He was a fan first, and people remarked how similar he looked to Bryan and he then tried singing like him. It was through this that he discovered that he could sing, not just Bryan's songs but other peoples. He sings in clubs in Scotland and England not always as Bryan Ferry but just as Mike Nelson doing songs by Elvis, The Beetles, Buddy Holly etc. He puts some of these songs in with his Bryan Ferry set if he feels the audience are not all Ferry fans. He performed on Saturday :- Let's Stick Together, Slave To Love, Love Is The Drug, Dance Away, Angel Eyes, Avalon, Jealous Guy & The Price Of Love. along with some 50's & 60's songs. He also has in his reportoire Virginia Plain, Do The Strand, The 'In' Crowd & Don't Stop The Dance. He feels these songs are not so well known by non fans and don't go down as well. He studies the videos and from this he has mastered every Ferry movement, mannerism & facial expression. He just looks and sounds like the real thing. It can seem a wee bit caracitured when you are a big fan like myself, but if you allow for the fact that it is not the real thing and he is not trying to compete with the real thing then you won't have to say it's not as good as the real thing. Lets face it, 2 tours since 1982 is not a lot of live Ferry concerts to see so this can fill a wee gap. He uses backing tapes and not a full band which would obviously be better, but it is not feesible. He only started this Ferry tribute thing after his TV appearance in 1991, so he has missed the boat as far as Bryan's own popularity goes. If Bryan was more popular now, then he might be in more demand himself. I mentioned to him about a convention, and he would be delighted to do a show like this, especially as he has never had an audience of all Roxy fans that would know more than just the hits. Mike is doing the Ferry Tribute in :- Pontins, Lowestoft, Suffolk May 2nd 1999 Casablanca Club, Grimsby, 23rd July 1999 He will update me on any other dates and I will let you know. If anyone goes to these shows then let us know all about it. Sorry if this was discussed while I was off the list, but I recently found a newish Roxy biography in Waterstones called Unknown Pleasures (I forget the author).
