Who did he turn down and who did he record with? 3) The 70`s band Traffic slams the glam movement in their '72 recording of "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys", but it is directed at one band in particular. Today it's "Editions of Roxy" from St. Peter Dewey. And what an interesting collection it is. Some great stuff, some dire, but as Han pointed out in an earlier message Virginia Plain really sticks out. A complete and utter Ferry satire. Full of warbles and Sprechsgang. Brilliant. I can tell you one thing, this world of Roxy keeps me laughing. Perhaps there is even room for an "Editions of Roxy 2" condsidering the number of covers completed in the last year. Heres a list of things I can think off that aren't already on the current compilation: Ladytron, 2HB, Bitters End and Bitter Sweet from "Velvet Goldmine" Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees (Both Ends Burning) Somebody on the Super Mario Bros. soundtrack (Love is The Drug) 10,000 Manics (More Than This) M People (Avalon) Emmy (More Than This) Jimmy Scott (Slave to Love) We could even stick in "4BF" by Madness and that song that Bryan wrote for "what's her name" in ABBA (Now waiting for a hasty reply from Kicki). Also in the package this morning was Roxy live in London 1974/75 (not sure of the name of the boot). But again magnificent. Ferry at his best. He'd have made a good Hitler. Come to think of it Hitler was the only man in history that had a dodgier moustache than Bryans. Back to the point and I can see what Gene means when he says Roxy were "a live band". Myself and Martin disagreed about this a couple of weeks ago. He reckoned the live material couldn't touch the album material. But I have to say that the live stuff gives another slant. Thompson really lets rip (perhaps this is the reason Martin does not appreciate Thompson), Manzenara and Mackay play some fantastic solos, the likes of which are not available on record. Ferry's roars make for an amazing atmosphere and yet he has complete control over his voice. The crowd are really enjoying themselves (the noise is deafening) and as a result so are the band. Witness Ferry in If it Takes All Night "Wait a minute here's Phil". Pure theatre. A few weeks back I got the 76 Stockhom concert and while good in places the band had lost it's edge. Ferry was trying to sing in a softer tone but hadn't yet perfected it and the audience would never be the same again. So I guess my question is what other great boots are out there, specifically from 1972-75. Because I want them. Thanks a million once more to St. Peter and also to Arnie for putting together the compilation. Much appreciated. For the most part I would agree with Martin, but exceptions would be Remake/Remodel on Musicladen video and Mother of Pearl on '75 NY/London boot. Also thought the Bete Noir material on the Newtown video sounded better than the album, especially Limbo, also the Chosen One, I guess that's a lot of exceptions. I also agree with Gene, by the '76 Stockholm show they were tame and too comfortable with the material or whatever it was the edge wasn't as rough. It was the most surrealistic scene I've ever seen: Whoopie Goldberg dressed as a Velvet Goldmine freak (with feathers a la Eno in For Your Pleasure) and the orchestra directed by Bill Conti played ,with all its hollywoodean style , Eno's 'Needles in the Camel's Eye' (the first song of 'Here Come the Warm Jets'). I thought it was a nightmare, Roberto. Actually Whoopie looked like Patty LaBelle cira 1975. LaBelle was very glam around that time and they put on a TREMENDOUS show. I still have their autographs after the show they played a the Auditorium Theatre in 1975. It was cool of Bill Conti to play the Eno song because I'm sure that most of that audience did not have a clue- of course with the exception of us Avalonians who stayed up to see that part of the show. It wasn't a total loss for Velvet Goldmine though. The women that did the costumes for Shakespeare in Love ( she won for that one though)ALSO did the fab clothes for Velvet Goldmine. She did acknowledge that fact in her speech. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 23:09:11 -0600 From: jas2347@xsite.net Subject: [AVALON] MuchMusic Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 15:11:08 -0600 From: Kimberly Shell Subject: [AVALON] MuchmoreMusic -Reply Hi -Jas My cable is that 21st Century - digital setup. All music fans start out with studio albums but what you get from a live performance is pure, real and crystal clear, free of the confines of the "in it for the money only" record label dictating every move and questioning it`s marketability. The beauty of the live performance is the musical interplay between the band members. It`s when that magical moment sneaks up on you real quick and unexpected, and is gone just as quickly. These magical moments are always live. This will never happen in a studio. It will never happen while getting the tape machine rolling, it will never happen when the bass has to be over dubbed because towards the end the bassist gets so into it, he drowns out the guitarist. I suspect it`s for this reason record companies don`t like live albums, especially bootlegs. They can`t stand the thought of a song from years ago from some nondescript arena might eventually show more passion or more balls than the over polished/sanitized studio version, even if they may have missed a high note or fell flat on the vocals. IMO, this is the way it should be because it`s rock and roll.
