I don't know about you but I can only consider a flesh and blood meeting with a fellow Avalonion as a blind date. After all, what do we actually know about each other ? Gareth's contributions have raged through our cyberspace, leaving a trail of political incorrectness and Gaelic profanity. Thus I was looking forward immensely to our encounter. But no harm in checking him out first, I thought, so I located his CONTEST *8A : BOYS & GIRLS profile. Let me see. Quote that describes your philosophy : "Suck on my chocolate salty balls." Mmm. Kinky. But no real clues. What about Favorite Make-Out Music : "Hold on I'm coming." Okay so he's a sensitive lover. But what does he look like ? "Big feet, big nose.. big head." Right, I'm looking for a large man. Now here's the clincher, Celebrity you most resemble : Peter Stringfellow / Cheetah in the Tarzan films. (The former, friends, is a London nightclub owner out of your worst nightmares. An unreconstructed elderly playboy complete with perma-tam, lion-mane of hair and dollybird accessories.) This was getting frightening. Peering into my extensive wardrobe I am looking for inspiration. My chocolate brown velvet suit winks back at me. Shall I be that Superfly guy tonight ? This Stringfellow manque would miss the irony but I could imagine Anthony (Price) approving. Then again our chosen meeting point, The Enterprise Bar, was not famous for its attention to style, a wannabe Paddy joint with media pretentions. And didn't I read somewhere that Gareth was a student ? I slung on my navy moleskin strides, a big navy coat and set off for my date with Avalon destiny. The pub was heaving with post-work humanity. I'd said I'd meet him at the bar. The bar was 3 deep. Everyone had big feet and big noses. Everyone looked like a big Irish student. I smiled at a few people. Oh shit. Now I look like some sad cruiser. A couple inched away from me. I gunned my Guinness. I wondered what the hell I was doing. A tap on my shoulder. Some young clean-cut, fresh faced boy was whispering in my ear. I wanted to shout "Look I'm not gay, I'm just looking to meet a stranger who shares my passion for Bryan Ferry." Maybe that wouldn't work either. The young guy was coming on hard to me in some impenetrable accent. Hang on.. "You're not Gareth are you ?" "Dead on,Martin," came back the Ulster brogue. We were one. We ordered drinks and toasted the greatest singer /songwriter of the 20th Century. "Och, you didn't believe that Stringfellow crack," Gareth chuckled later. He looked like a sixformer whose Mum personally applied his hair-gel each morning. The wildman of Avalon ? Hah ! Twelve hours later we are breakfasting "en famille chez moi,' a pale sun peeping through the security bars. The beer, the whiskey, the endless videotape, all these have failed to put a wrinkle on his smooth face. My eyes are like roadmaps, whilst his twinkle with health. Gareth is indeed a charming guy. We had a fabulous evening. My wife now views Avalon with less foreboding. "If our son Xavier turns out to be half as sweet a wee boy as Gareth then I'll be perfectly happy," she beams... - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 08:31:41 PST From: "mark shanahan" Subject: [AVALON] roxy meetings to all: gareth hath written: >Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 11:43:55 PST >From: "gareth mc ginley" >Subject: [AVALON] An evening with Mr.Stockman i refrain from copying the whole thing. point being, dear god man, thank you!! i have tears coming to my eyes from the sheer laughter i must contain in my little, tiny, confining, claustrophobic cubicle where i now entertain the idea of taking a permanent vacation. but i digress ... this really was just too funny -- thank you so much. you've given me something to strive for -- a goal ... a point of reference ... a yardstick ... a martini-measuring instrument by which to gauge our own twisted little roxy gathering. my only regret is that i will *not* be able to produce from my pocket a dinner invitation from our fearless, fearless leader. however, i can drink martinis and dream, can't i? god, yes man!! indeed -- i must! re: the compilation. this is sounding better and better. but, if the maestro can be, in fact *persuaded*, to do his bond opening sequence imitation, then i say the following: i vote, on behalf of the ladies on the list (really), that he do two versions. one classic, the other -- live up to his mention of the soft porn version. you'd vote for that, wouldn't you ladies? these are my ever-important thoughts today on the world of bryan ferry and roxy musique. actually, has anyone heard anything re: new albums from either? is the roxy reunion rumour dying or what?! no news is *not good news*! peaces/ms Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 10:48:27 -0600 From: Kimberly Shell Subject: [AVALON] roxy meetings -Reply Mark says: <<.. a martini-measuring instrument by which to gauge our own twisted little roxy gathering>. . . . . . >> Can't WAIT!!!
