For those who've never heard it it is as exciting as finding a Ferry import thats never been released..A reworking of the Country Life opener that has an ATTACK - I can't think of a better adjective - quite different from the studio sound. It rattles along. Musicians amongst us will no doubt inform us that its in a different key, different time scale, whatever, but the result is a far greater thrill. It ends with that wild outro riff and the band - Andy, Phil, Tibbs, Hubbard - in a horseshoe around Ferry, as if circling on their prey. Just when I thought I'd seen it all... Agreed with the others on this. Casanova has the implied hostility, the barbs and the air of menace while being vague enough to allow Bryan to seem offended if accused of anything as low as taunting Brian Eno. Brian - second hand? - was working with Cale and Nico - second rate? - when Casanova was written. Hence, perhaps, the "flirting with heroin" pun (Heroin being the most famous song from the Velvets' 1st album, which featured both Cale and Nico). The wonderfully dismissive "Or is it cocaine?" could even (at a pinch, so to speak) be a reference to the fact that John Cale - known to be a total cocaine fiend at the time - was and still is often assumed to be the much better known J.J. Cale, famous for his song Cocaine, among others. Seems wildly fanciful but this style is a standard Ferry disguise. There's also the small matter of the rhymes and word shapes. But Robert Fedder's suggestion that it's a Ferry introspective also works. And it's true that Eno's Blank Frank is said by many to be an attack on Ferry - not sure that I buy this. But listen to Brian's Some of Them Are Old and Dead Finks Don't Talk - these seem like stronger possibilities. Bryan's need to make ever-so-subtle references in passing hasn't diminished but has been refined over the years. Neil Young's The World On a String and Lou Reed's What Goes On are seemingly nodded at while Mamouna's opener plays. Their lyrics add something to the mood of Bryan's song (a great track) and both artists are known to be Ferry favourites. While also being a fan of them both, I'm unfortunately obliged to scotch the flattering Ferry-in-disguise rumours. (Arnie, it's all YOUR fault. ) Am saving up for the Californian face and body replacement with combined personality upgrade but till then I'm definitely just me. But listen to Brian's Some of Them Are > Old and Dead Finks Don't Talk - these seem like stronger possibilities. Dead Finks is not about Bryan Ferry. After all the music was recorded and the words written, Chris Thomas (my producer and Roxys as well) said, youll get me shot for that track. Its obviously about Bryan. So I listened back to it and it obviously was. It was certainly something I hadnt realised. Essentially all these songs have no meaning that I invested in them. Meanings can be generated within their own frame-work. It may be a very esoteric thing to talk about but I dont think its entirely out of the question. -- Brian Eno, 1973 Yeah, well, OK. Earlier in the same interview he says he lyrics were randomly generated. I suppose it just depends on your defintion of words like "coincidence." Or "kismet."
