[Shane Henson Subject: [AVALON] Manzanera in Australia By PATRICK DONOVAN. Although Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera was born in Cuba and spent his childhood playing revolution songs on a Spanish guitar, you won't hear such influences on the band's albums. "Most people have no idea that I was brought up in South America. Because, quite frankly, no one was interested in South America in the "70s and early half of the "80s," says Manzanera who plays this weekend in Womadelaide, the Australian leg of the Womad tour. "It was almost derogatory to mention that you were from South America. They had no idea how funky it was out there. They had no idea that the beginnings of reggae and all that were going on." Sensing limited career opportunities in Latin American music, and inspired by Chuck Berry riffs and early psychedelic music by the likes of Pink Floyd, Manzanera decided his future was in a rock band. He moved to London and joined Roxy music, in 1971. By the time the band split, in "83, they had 10 numberone albums to their name and had helped instigate the glam movement. Manzanera, invited to the premiere of the glamrock film Velvet Goldmine last year, got the surprise of his life in the opening minutes. "The opening title track was something I wrote with Brian Eno in my mother's front room. It was so weird." England was itching for something theatrical and exotic in the late "70s, he says. "The bands of that time came right after an era of people playing very long solos, wearing very drab clothes, turning their backs on their audiences and generally being very selfindulgent. "Roxy and Bowie wanted to be a bit theatrical, a bit showbizzy and get back to the glamor of Elvis Presley and "40s and "50s theatre. And it coincided with the first use of proper theatrical lighting. By "90, Manzanera felt a calling to rediscover his roots. He set up Expression Records and released 11 albums of Spanish rock. Being an improvisational guitarist, Manzanera is always exploring new directions, and at Womadelaide will perform with the African Gypsies. The Gypsies includes guitarist and vocalist Ray Phiri, best known in the West for his songwriting and catchy guitar arrangements on Paul Simon's Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints albums. Womad headliners include Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin - who taught Bob Marley guitar - and one of Africa's most popular singers, Baaba Maal. Manzanera enjoys playing with both South African and South American musicians, but says they are completely different experiences. He has played with some of the most instinctive modern musicians from Brian Eno to John Cale and Dave Gilmour. The African Gypsies have a similarly intuitive approach, he says. "People always said that with European musicians it's all head and not necessarily a lot of heart, and that pretty much hits it on the head. And, having had a South American mother and an English father, both kinds of music satisfy both sides of my personality. "I think that this is a really good time for people to reassess the whole music scene, and embrace all these music areas, so people understand where all of the music they love comes from." Phil Manzanera plays with the African Gypsies at Womadelaide this weekend. Copyright John Fairfax Holdings Limited 1999. Not available for re-dissemination. British mainstream radio is a shadow of its former self with, it seems to me, an ever narrowing breadth of music on their playlists, which is dictated more by the artist's age as the quality of their music. This is evident to a small extent in releases ... why apart from possible copyright / license issues would "Help me" be released in the U.S. but not the U.K.? Similarly why would "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" be included on the U.S. soundtrack of the film "Legend" but omitted altogether from the U.K. (European?) version. Why does so much of Bryan's work - including new tracks like "Dance With Life" appear in U.S. films? Now before someone jumps in and says it, I can't believe it's because Americans have more taste than Brits!! But if someone over there can identify the reason then bottle it and send it back here - we need it. Not the U.S. I live in. I've seen two Roxy/Ferry videos in the last 10 yearson MTV and VH1. When they do A to Z videos they/he are ALWAYS left out. You will instead see greats Flock of Seaguls and Wall of Vodoo always included. Some radio play, but very few stations, not the big ones. You may be under a false impression. FM radio here is a mere shell of itself as well. PAPER REGARDING EBAY & AUTOGRAPHED MDSE! READ! Hi Jay here: PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS. I thought I'd bring this to your attention. Today 2-24-99 there was a BIG story in the S.F. paper regarding FRAUD ON EBAY. YAHOO was not discussed. It appears EBAYS complaints from customers BUYING have TRIPLED in 2 years or less. One of the problems discussed effects every buyer of AUTOGRAPHED MDSE, both MUSIC/MOVIE & SPORTS related. Toys were discussed also 'SUPPOSEDLY' authenic real G.I. JOES, BARBIE DOLLS, BEANIES ETC... One thing they mentioned was to BE CAREFUL OF AUTOGRAPHED MDSE EVEN WITH A COA. COA certificates can easily BE BOUGHT and then signed AUTHENTIC. Many complaints came from customers who bought this stuff and the MDSE never arrived/seller vanished or the MDSE was not the REAL SIGNATURES. I for one know of 2 cases on EBAY where AUTO'd MDSE were removed from the auctions by EBAY. I had bid on a signed Moody Blues LP and all this seller's auctions VANISHED days before the auction ended. EBAY yanked it. I was confused! Till i wrote the seller and he said HE WAS BEING ACCUSED OF FRAUD! Another case...I was recently going to bid on a signed Moody Blues LP by Justin Hayward, know what? I saw the signature scan and it was fake. How do I know? I have met many artists in the business FACE TO FACE and have seen them sign stuff to me or friends FACE TO FACE including Justin Hayward/The Kinks/Grand Funk, Tull etc etc... This sig was so STRANGE and all the rest of these AUTO'D LP's sig's he had, I wrote him. I said you know...I met some of these artists FACE TO FACE and these SIG's DO NOT MATCH MY AUTO'D LP's. I'm somewhat in the biz. Next day THE AUCTION WAS REMOVED. EVERY AUCTION THIS PERSON HAD UP VANISHED. Ebay has removed a number of AUCTION relating to all the above MDSE due to complaints, and NOT complaints from me. They received almost 7,000 complaints since '97! All I'm saying is it was in the paper LARGE AS LIGHT and I'm just passing it on... I've always liked the above songs so one day when I was in the local music store I asked to listen to the More than This compilation and was so impressed that I bought it. I knew some songs (Oh Yeah, Avalon, Don't Stop the Dance) from the music they play in the shop where I work. My collection so far consists of: Roxy Music - Siren, Country Life, Flesh and Blood and Avalon. Bryan Ferry - These Foolish Things, Let's Stick Together, Bete Noir and Taxi and More than This. I was lucky to get Siren because it has apparently been deleted in Aus, but I picked up an import for only $21.95. What is Mamouna like? Is it classic Ferry? I'm planning on getting the first Roxy Music album next (if I can stretch my student budget).
