Stranded was a UK Number 1 (at a time when far more albums were "shifted") but Avalon was a slow burner, and like Flesh And Blood, appealed to an "easy listening" market. I know people who got into Avalon 3 years after release whereas in those prolific mid 70's the Roxy ensemble might have knocked out 4-5 albums in that period. Although Roxy were huge in Europe / Asia in the 70s they made little or no impact Stateside until F+B and Avalon, I think. Bryan refers to Love Is The Drug as a "turntable hit" in the US which I take to mean a "one hit wonder, " and did not lead to massive sales of Siren in Hicksville, Arizona. Of course Andy and Phil often complained that Bryan's pursuit of the American market led the band away from their Avante Garde roots. My rather sentimental take on this is that he wanted success in the home of the jazz / r'n b heroes of his youth. That... and his expensive lifestyle. I'm a 21 year old Aussie who only recently got into Roxy Music/ Bryan Ferry. Over the past couple of months I've managed to get 4 Roxy albums and 4 Bryan Ferry ones, plus the More Than This greatest hits cd. I can't stop playing these cds at the moment. The best thing about both RM and BF is that you can listen to the songs over and over without getting sick of them (of course, you all probably feel the same way and have been listening longer than I have). Anyway, I look forward to learning more about Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry on this list. Great fun! Two version of more than this but two different songs. A nice Ferry imitation of icehouse and very funny interpretations of Virginia Plain and Editions of you. Thanks Arnie and Peter and...... To make it more complete, I've made a front and backcover in the best Roxy tradition. Interested? Quite a good read. One of the things I read about with particular interest is how records have developed from having one track to having (as we all well know) 56 track. In my mind 56 track should be re-named "takes 10 years to make a record" in order to dissuade Bryan from using it. What other musicians use 56 track these days? Do they take as long to make records? I also wondered is it now possible to go beyond 56 track. Well if it is I'm sure we'll here Bryan talking about it after his next release. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 99 21:00:28 UT From: "Robert Fedder" Subject: [AVALON] BF st cool London party Today's Evening Standard (London daily evening newspaper) talks about a Vogue editor's party with A-list fashionistas present.
