Just mentioned to someone yesterday that Mr.Ferry was my favourite musician and got the ever so typical response of "Oh, Mr. Cool". I was just trying to think up of the resons why he deserves this title as opposed to anyone else in music. So here goes..... NAME A short, evenly balanced name. It's Bryan with a long, drawn out sophisticated "y" instead of the oh so ordinary "i" (apologies to Brian Folks). Ferry, too, is associated with the mythical little people from a far off world. Yet it is not a flash name, nor an invented one like David Bowie, just natural. AURA OF THE MUSICIAN Regardless of subject matter the music bis seems like a fantasy world to the outsider. In the case where the subject has maintained unwavering integrity in a career spanning 27 years the aura is something special, something unique, a very hard thing to do as Elton "English Rose" John, Paul "Frog Song" Mc Cartney, David "China Girl" Bowie, and others will testify to. The music has developed from having very much an edge to being suave and sophisticated. The theme of love and loss has run throughout, but whereas 25 years ago it was in relation to inflatable dolls, now it is sung about icons like Garbo. The feeling is "been there, done that". NATURAL BEUTY Lets face it guys we've all tried to look like Bryan Ferry at one time or another. There has never been much doubt that he could have run a parallel career as a model. He is, quite simply, the best looking man in music. The long, dark hair, the heavy lidded eyes of the doomed romantic, the droopy lip that makes the haunted expression so affective. Could you imagine Danny De Vito singing: "All the World, even you Should learn to love the way I do" ??????? IMAGE ACCESSIORIES Whether wearing an outfit with his tongue firmly in his cheek or otherwise Ferry always looks the part. White tuxedo, tiger jacket, G.I. uniform, Gaucho, splendid suit and tie, or even in crumpled khakis, he looks swell in every one of them. And who has ever used a cigarrette so affectively as a fashion accessory? It is a symbol of social divide between "square" musicians like Cliff Richard, and those that have lived the rock and roll lifestyle on vices. So strong an image is it that Bryan is still using it years after giving them up (Mamouna sleeve). ENDEARING PERSONALITY But looks aren't everything and nobody gets away without a personality. Bryan has an endearing one. His posh voice is tinged with a Geordie lilt, and almost to prove the public wrong about preconceptions they may have he is shy and even laughs in a nervous fashion. The message is "I may be the beaut in the suit BUT I'm still modest as anything". Hence comments like "I've never been cool at all really. I've got quite a dull face, which people interpret as being cool" PUBLIC IMAGE The public see a man with taste, one that will never do anything ridicolous (well as long as he's not wearing a blind fold). He's gone out with some of the best looking women, and yet apparently doesn't want to let anyone in on the secret. He is strictly heterosexual, and yet has a camp side to him. He's one of the most elite names to have on a party guest list and lives it up when he attends them. He likes art too, an even more exclusive club than that of the musician. Art is presently the most cultured and yet creative of processes. BALANCING ACT To be liked a person needs to perform quite a good balancing act and Bryan does this like few others. So much so that he often contradicts himself from one interview to the next. He can be both extremely serious and then relly funny, both a snob and the most down to Earth person you could meet, and despite singing about living the exceptional life he has ended up living quite a mundane one himself. ........What a guy P.S. 1. Jeff I'm still waiting with bated breath for part 2 of the 1997 interview. 2. What are the lyrics to "4BF" by Madness. 3. Who is the person making copies of the raritities cd. First I thought it was John O Brien, now it seems like it's Arnie et. al. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 15:18:15 EST From: JObinv01@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Trivia I don't know the answer to this one, but I'll try a guess. A couple of thoughts: Many listeners - even admirers - have found something distant and emotionless, ie cool, - in Ferry, whereas to my ears he has always been genuinely moving, irony notwithstanding. An ex of mine, for example, thought MAMOUNA cold and unfeeling, while for me it is a deeply affecting work. One friend of Ferry's - can't think who - naughtily remarked that he was the perfect man for a woman precisely because he was in all ways except one a gay man! Gay manner, gay sensitivity, gay sense of humour, but attracted to women. Every woman's dream... I questioned this vacation thing, rumour has it Andy's out on strike and won't return until Bryan releases a new album. It could get mighty cold atop that flagpole....
