But you know, there doesn't have to be an ounce of truth to anything anyone said about themselves. On the contrary, when was the last time you heard anyone's self-evaluation ring true? People only describe themselves with words and layers of text to increase the mystery, they represent themselves just like we interpret a "real" thing by painting, photographing, or otherwise creating its double. So, what it boils down to is that you don't have to worry one bit, no one around here is any more real than they were before. We just made up a few stories to pass the time, and to procrastinate job-hunting. The subtitle was "glittering moments with the mad, the bad, and the brilliant". Chenery interviewed a number of so-called "bad" boys and girls including our very own Mr Ferry. ***************** SLAVE TO LOVE - ------------- "People say `oh, you are such a cool guy'," says Bryan Ferry, placing one immaculate suede cowboy boot on the windowsill and running a long, sensitive hand through the famously artful sweep of hair. "And I say, `oh, fuck off'. I am very emotional. I feel things very deeply. I am cool on the exterior but I'm actually very Latin." Bryan Ferry, suave dude, cool croner of the '70's -- who could forget `Slave to Love?' -- languid, aristocratic style-queen of the '80's and '90's, suddenly stops as if surprised by his outbreak of, well, emotion. He squirms in his chair in a tall, carefully rumpled, large dog sort of way, looking soulfully out from under the spaniel hair, appealing, appalled. The studied romantic gloss, it is rapidly becoming apparent, is calculatedly surface. Image, darling, as I seem to say ad nauseam, is everything. But the slick suit of celebrity, it seems, is a mask. Ferry appears a man not comfortable in his own skin. Wearing his beauty as a crumpled suit that he might, at any moment, shrug off to release the darker demons seeting away in there that drive him. Thos ugly, dark, scary places of self-doubt and introspection that we are all to familiar with in this book. Like all great obsessives, he seems doomed to an unquiet centre. "I can be pretty bad," he says of the torture of obsession. "I can be an absolute nightmare, you ask the people around me, I can be absolutely weird. Until the next thing comes along and takes over. You are longing for the next thing to step in. I can see it in one of my sons already, it makes me laugh." It made me laugh too when I took his advice and actually asked one of those people. He had, only the day before, locked himself in his hotel room and refused to come out until a woman working on his tour wrote him a letter apologising for, get this, calling him a prima donna. He is an artiste, darling, he has an artiste's temperament. But he is a nice man really. In spite of himself. Shy. Easily hurt. Fastidiously dreamy. "I've always run over deadlines and screwed up release dates rather than say `OK, that'll do'."
