Interview with Cliff Jones, Glasgow Herald 29th January: But being a music journalist must surely have taught you something useful, other than Don't be a music journalist. "I learnt what it takes to be great ... to know what's real and what's not real. I'm not a poacher turned gamekeeper, though. I mean, I have been thinking about Gay Dad since the age of five, after all." Who'd you learn most from? Judging by the brilliant racket which is your first single, you've learnt more than a bit from your erstwhile idol, Mr Pop, and his lizardly cohorts, the Stooges. "From Iggy, sure, but Bryan Ferry, for example, turned out over the course of a drunken lunch to be so much more than I'd always thought he was - which was a lot to begin with. ______________________________________________________________________ The information in this email is confidential and may also be legally privileged. Yes, that I did. In that interview (made by a Swedsih reporter) he also complains that he doesn't recognize his old country any more...all those frightful unions constantly on strike. I have another Swedish interview in which Ferry comes across as a male chauvinist. He doesn't like girls who've gone to bed with "everybody", he's met them and he thinks they are horrible. For a guy though, it's usually considered a merith to have bedded as many girls as possible. Maybe it's a bit unfair, Ferry muses, but he seems to accept what he calls the "natural order of things". For a man, it's an instinct to persue a woman... In that interview (I think it's from 1982) he also feels very strongly that it's totally wrong to bring girlfriends and wives along when you go on tour. "It splits the guys apart. The artists lives outside a political reality blah blah. When punk first surfaced music writers felt obliged to put a political spin on almost every interview. I was a student then and I remember Anti-Nazi League activists citing Bowie (That salute at Victoria station) and Bryan (quasi-Nazi chic circa Country Life)) as supposed apologists for the far right. Of course it wasn't true and I only raise the issue to illustrate the climate of that time. Manifesto is probably his only nod to political belief, in the same way that Psalm hints at a spiritual faith. He has always spoken sentimentally about his father as a working man, blue collar if you like, and that line about "I am for the man who drives the hammer." is as close as you'll get to a statement in this regard. The kids are your own, are they not? /Kicki - working late as usual Kicki, I am glad to see that SOMEONE besides me realises that it is NOT possible to 'Babysit' your own kids. What I am sure Martini is thinking is...he will be 'busy Parenting His Children.' That is, if he IS talking about his own children.... Oh, and about Politics and Rock Stars: I admire and enjoy many 'artists' who are so damn diametrically opposed to my views, but as long as they are intelligent with their views (Frank Zappa, John Lennon), then I can dig on hearing them talk about it....but not if they are complete Morons (Madonna) when they try to talk rational politics. And I like her music..just keep singing, babe, and don't embarass yourself on Larry King again.... Heather, have you found a JOB yet???? I've got an ethical dilemma. We're moving to Boston in another 5 months, yet most of the interest I've gotten has been from Detroit companies who are looking for full-time, permanent people, whom, up until now, I've been lying to and saying, "Oh yeah, I'll be here forever." Today I gave another company that line, then broke down and told him it just wasn't true, I would be moving in 5 months. You see, I don't like to lie! (I guess it's a feeling of my need to atone for all the other horrible things I've done in my life). At any rate, this honesty won't work unless I can find a contract position that will last for five months. Oh, woe is me.
