I'm also a member of the Associates mailing list and we have a LONG way to go to match the level of activity of the Avalonians [we are but 93 strong] but if Roxy Music was an acquired taste for Americans I would guess that Associates would be all but inedible. This was music that had precedents [Roxy, Bowie, Moroder, Billie Holiday] but frequently veered off into virgin territory. Their album "4th Drawer Down" is a compilation of singles released during 80-81 which sounds like little else I've heard. Tracks like "Kitchen Person" and "Message Oblique Speech" sound like music created by aliens. "White Car In Germany" is a impressive goose-stepper of a number that I'm sure David Bowie hated himself for not writing 3 years earlier for inclusion on the "Heroes" album. Their massive hit album "Sulk" made then stars in the UK but the core of the band split at that point and separately they never reached the heights again. Billy MacKenzie had a very impressive vocal range that carried him from stentorian pomp to girlish falsetto. Alan Rankine provided the other-worldly soundscapes. The rhythm section was appropriated from an early Cure lineup. Any Associates/Billy MacKenzie record with the exception of the sole run-of-the-mill record "Wild & Lonely" is well worth investigating. Good luck in finding anything. I have a collection of about 80% of their output and it's taken me 9 years to achieve. If not for a certain New Orleans record store I where the owner was also a fan, I'd only have about 40%. Fortunately, Billy's suicide has raised their porfile enough so that re-issues are now slated to appear. It is as though they never existed, as stated earlier. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 09:10:38 -0600 (CST) From: Heather Marie Propes Subject: Re: [AVALON] Associates plug On Thu, 4 Feb 1999, Jim Donato wrote: > It's been really nice seeing mention of my favorite Scottish post-punk band > here of late. But I'm having a little trouble imagining their sound. Would you put them into the "smooth, elegant, futuristic yet angst-ridden" category of post-punk, shared by artists such as Ultravox (one of my faves with Jon Foxx), Roxy, Gary Numan, or Japan? Or would they fall into the more "rough edged, bouncy, sarcastic pop" category like the Fall or XTC? Or would they fall into the >more "rough edged, bouncy, sarcastic pop" category like the Fall or XTC? The starting point for an appreciation of this band is certainly Billy MacKenzie's voice. These are tonsils you can trust. He sings in the heroic tradition of Bowie circa "Lodger" combined with an extraordinary vocal range, swooping from screeching falsetto to baritone in the course of a phrase. Think of Bryan's opening croon on Sentimental Fool with a higher vocal mix. Musically they were more upbeat than the bands you mention : more in the territory of early Pet Shop Boys, intelligent disco if you like.... I am no expert however. Jim Donato gave us an excellent appraisal. I understand a book on the life of Billy MacKenzie was published in UK by Bloomsbury Books, and was received very well in literary circles here. Its available via the Bloomsbury website. There is definitely one British date missing I saw them in Liverpool at the St Georges Hall concert room, not sure of the date but I know it wasn't long after seeing them at the Lincoln festival. One of the things that has always drawn me to RM, BF--besides their music, lyrics, irony, sense of style, etc.--has been their relative obscurity here in the States. I view that as a GOOD thing; that those of us who are fans are part of a select few who actually "get it." Perhaps it is merely a self-serving categorization I use to boost my psyche (and that of all Avalonians, of course) and to separate myself from the dreaded mainstream. Hmmm, a Darwinian New Town... Example: when my husband tries to explain who BF/RM is (and why they're an obsession of mine) to friends who have never heard of them, he typically says "The lead singer was with Mick Jagger's wife before Mick was, and he also sang Slave to Love. Or, they did that Love is the Drug song back in the 70's." And these friends always seem to nod in understanding at this explanation...before I start screaming in frustration. It's hopeless.
